Title: Emily's New School and New Love (adapted from my book "Seashells." Join my club Seashells Roleplay, for more fun! :])
By: Horsesforever12

Introduction:
Going back to school after a long, relaxing summer can be difficult. But imagine moving and going to a whole new school with kids and teachers you don't know. Especially when those kids make fun of you because you love horses. Well listen to Emily's tale as she tells you what it's like.

Chapter 1: Moving to Maine. ~<3~
I stepped out of the car. The smell of the sea wafted past me and the warm summer air blew my brown hair every-which-way. "This is not Chicago," I thought, looking around at the wildflowers and the old farmhouse that we were moving into. It was right by the sea. I dropped my bags and told my parents that I was going to go explore. I ran down to the beach and looked around. The crystal-blue sea went on for miles until it seemed to meet with the sky. Seashells dotted the sand and a big lighthouse towered on a green hill. It was a weird...it was a mixture of blueberry barrens, pine trees, green meadows, and salty seas. I didn't know what to think. Then I thought about school and groaned. Since my dad was a photographer, I was used to moving around a lot. But I always hated going to a new school.
I stood up and walked down the beach a bit more. Soon I saw our neighbor's house. It was a farmhouse, like ours. Only this one had a big red barn and a large paddock. A palomino-colored horse stood grazing in the pasture. I went over to the horse cautiously. I wasn't much of a horse fan, so I didn't know what to think of the large creature. "Hey horse..." I said softly. The horse lifted it's head and stared at me with big brown eyes while still munching on some tufts of grass.
"His name's Dakota," a voice said behind me. I whirled around to see a girl about my age, with long blonde hair and very green eyes. Every time she smiled a big dimple flashed in her left cheek. She climbed over the paddock fence and hugged the horse.
"I'm sorry if I was disturbing you..." I said shyly.
"Oh no, you weren't. I'm Savannah by the way. Who are you? I have see you before." the girl said rather plainly. I got the feeling that she liked to speak her mind.
"I'm Emily. My family just moved into that old farmhouse-"
"That's cool! I just knew someone would live there someday, even though everyone thinks it's haunted. But I know that's not true. So what do you think of Dakota? He's a Palomino/Quarter Horse gelding. And I just love him bunches! He's 8, so I take him to shows." Savannah said. I smiled.
"He's...a...nice."
"Do you not like horses?" she asked, frowning.
"Well, I'm not the horse-crazy type." I admitted. I felt like not being horse-crazy was a sin to her, the way she stood there gaping at me.
"Who wouldn't love horses! They are the best animals in the world..." and she went off talking about horses. I stood there listening to her, realizing how much she knew and how much horses meant to her. I smiled weakly when she finished her speech.
"Wow. They do seem like nice animals...now I really need to go..." I was feeling a bit uncomfortable. Savannah didn't seem to notice.
"Hold your horses! You ain't leaving this property until your horse-crazy." she smiled daringly and I sighed, knowing what was coming next.

Chapter 2: Horse-crazy in 1 Hour ~<3~
"You are going to ride Dakota!" Savannah announced.
"But I don't know how," I protested.
"Exactly. You are going to learn how." Savannah said. She grabbed the lead rope draped over the paddock fence and clipped it to Dakota's green neon halter. She opened the gate and led the palomino out. I closed it after her and walked behind the horse as she led him into the barn. She put him on cross-ties and started to groom him.
"Grab a curry comb and help me," she told me.
"What's a curry comb?" I asked, peering into the grooming bucket.
"This!" she said, holding up a rubber brush. I selected a brush that looked like the one she had showed me and started to softly stroke Dakota's coat.
"No, not like that! Like this:" Savannah said, taking the curry comb and making swift, clean, circular strokes over Dakota's coat. I watched her and did the same. Then she picked up another brush and gave me one that looked the same as hers.
"This is a hard brush. Make smooth, hard strokes over his coat. But don't do it on his belly or face. The hard brush is too harsh for those places. That's what the soft brush is for."
I followed her instructions and began brushing with the hard brush. After brushing with the soft brush, Savannah started combing out Dakota's mane and tail. I helped her. Then she began picking out Dakota's hooves. I thought that was an interesting process. Then She brought out the tack: A western saddle, blanket, and bridle. I watched her tack up and lead Dakota outside. Then she showed me how to mount. I put my left foot in the stirrup, gingerly, and mounted rather shakily. I took the reins...which seemed like to long ropes that I had no idea what to do with...and sat there, feeling odd. Dakota was shining and looked eager to get going, and I felt unsure and a little bit scared. Savannah seemed like an instructor, the way she stood on the lawn and talked to me severely. I listened to her closely.
"Make sure the ball of your foot is sitting correctly in the stirrup. Now, take up the reins...good. Riding western, you usually only hold the reins in one hand, and your other hand stays by your side. But you can use two hands, since your first starting out. Now click your tongue to Dakota and tell him to 'walk on'. If that doesn't work, give him a firm kick on his flank."
I wasn't quite sure what a 'flank' was, but I guessed that that was his side. I clicked my tongue and told him to walk on. Dakota flicked his ears back and walked forward obediently. A rush of emotions rose through me. Excitement, worry, and wonderment. Was I becoming horse-crazy?
