Don't Go, Star
By SadieT

Giddy up! Sara said.
Sara Tro was racing her horse, Star, against her friend Clara Tomson and Claras horse, Lightning.
Sara and Clara were next-door neighbors. Sara was an only child. Her parents both worked, so Sara and Clara spent most of the summer days together. Saras mom was a nurse, and her dad was a doctor. They both worked at the same hospital. Sara was 12 years old and Clara was 11.
Ah, man! You beat me again! said Sara as their horses pulled to a stop.
Lightning loves to live up to her name, said Clara with a big smile on her face.
Well, Ill bet Star can jump higher than Lightning! Star loves to jump to the stars! Sara challenged.
You ‘re on! said Clara.
The girls rode their horses through a series of five jumps. Star cleared all the jumps, but Lightning knocked two down.
Wow! said Clara. Star CAN jump to the stars!
Yep! said Sara.
Ok, Lightning can run as fast as lightning and Star can jump to the stars! said Clara. Is that fair enough?
That sounds good, Sara agreed. Come on! Let ‘s untack our horses and get some lunch at my place.
OK, said Clara. Im starving! I can untack Star, too, so you can start lunch sooner if you want, Clara suggested.
Sounds fair to me, said Sara. What do you want to eat?
How about a baloney sandwich. said Clara.
Coming right up! Sara said as she dismounted.
They ate their lunch without speaking and finished quickly.
Mmmmmm, said Clara. That was yummy!
Thanks. So what do you want to do now? Sara asked.
I dont know. Let ‘s go up to your room and think. answered Clara.
Okay, said Sara. You go up ahead of me. I ‘ll wash the dishes.
The phone rang just as Sara was putting away the last dish.
Hello? Oh, hi... So you ‘ll be home around 9:00? Okay, see you then. Sara said.
Who was that? Clara asked as she came down the stairs.
It was Mom. She said that she and Dad won ‘t be home until 9:00 tonight, answered Sara.
Hey, I know what we can do! said Clara excitedly.
What? asked Sara.
We can go to my house and see if my mom well let us stay overnight at your house. We could sleep in the barn and go for an early morning ride when we wake up. If that ‘s okay with you and your parents. Clara added.
Thats a great idea! Sara agreed. Let ‘s go!
They raced to Clara ‘s house and found Claras mom in the garden.
Clara, remember? Your brother has his guitar recital tonight. Mrs. Tomson said.
But, Mom! Do I hafta go? I dont like them any way! I ‘ll go next year. Please? Pretty please? Clara pleaded.
Its a have to. Ill let you go to Sara ‘s tonight. But you won ‘t get this mercy from me again soon, Mrs. Tomson said, trying to sound fierce.
The girls laughed.
What you laughing at? asked Mrs. Tomson.
Oh, nothing, said Clara still laughing a little. and its a What are you laughing at. Well, bye, Mom! Thanks!
Its Thank you, Clara! Mrs. Tomson yelled after her.
Oh, whatever. Same thing! Clara yelled back.
Not really! Mrs. Tomson yelled.
So what do you want to do now? Sara asked when they had returned to her house.
Why dont we pretend that were spys and spy on my house, Clara suggested.
Yes, lets! I ‘ll go get my binoculars, Sara said.
Good, Ill sneak into my house and get mine, said Clara.
Wow! That was fun! Sara said after they finished their game. We even learned two things!
Yeah, that my brother didnt care that I wasn ‘t going to his recital and that my mom ‘s making fish sticks for dinner tonight, said Clara. Its a good thing I ‘m spending the night with you, because I dont like fish sticks!
Yeah! said Sara. Wow, look at the time. It ‘s 7:00 P.M.
I thought my stomach was trying to tell me something! said Clara.
Why dont you go check on the horses while I make us some noodles, said Sara. Is it a deal?
Its a deal! said Clara. Do you want me to put the horses in the stable and give them some hay?
Sure! Sara said. Thatll be great!
A few minutes later Clara ran into the house. Her face was white.
Sara! I think Star is hurt! said Clara urgently.
What?!? said Sara as she ran to the pasture.
Sara found Star lying on the ground struggling to get up.
Oh, no! said Sara. Star, are you all right? She must have stepped in this little hole and and ...
And what? Clara asked.
And broke her leg! Sara cried.
Tears began to run down Sara ‘s face.
Its going to be okay, Sara. It really is, said Clara.
No, it ‘s not, said Sara. Do you know what they do to lame horses?
Oh oh no! They can ‘t put Star to sleep! What should we do? Clara asked desperately.
We cant do anything. We have to call my dad, Sara said.
Sara pulled out her cell phone and managed to make her shaky fingers dial the number. She told her dad what had happened. Then she was silent.
Okay, Dad, she said after a time.
Then she hung up.
What did he say? asked Clara.
He said we have to put Star to sleep, said Sara. Hes going to call someone to come out right away.
Sara knelt down next to her horse and cradled Stars head in her arms.
Star, Ill never forget you, she cried. Ill never be able to find a horse as good as you. We even beat Clara and Lightning in a jumping contest. Ill never forget you.
