The Jumping Course ~Chapter 1~
Varonnica

Isabella got out of bed at 6:30am in the morning to get ready for her Annual Competition. She got out of her night gown and slipped into her shower and then Shampooed and Conditioned her black thick coarse hair. She got out and dried herself down and got out her make-up bag, curling iron, brush, and hair gel with pony ties on it. She brushed her hair in her mirror and started to curl it. She worked the iron through her hair smoothly and put on her competition clothes. Her competition clothes are a Dark black vest, a white under shirt, English boots, and English pants. Then slipped on her velvet gloves and helmet. She told her mom she would be eating at the competition and went outside to the barn to get me ready.
She tied a rope to my halter and led me out of the stall. Isabella went to the tack room and got out my English set and got out some horse brushes, my curry comb, leg guarders, and hair ties for my hair to get braided. She put my tack on a tack holder and brushed me down. Isabella slipped her gloves off and tacked me up. Isabella then worked through my mane and put the ties on me. "I didn't realize you had hair like mine, Arica". I neighed to say yes and snorted. "Your such a good girl". She pat my neck and moved on to my tail.
Isabella her mom and dad loaded me up in the horse trailer and put some hay in their for me to get my breakfast. I looked out the trailers little window and seen some of my rivals coming to the competition as well.
We got there and Isabella got me out herself and mounted on me and her mom, Dawn, opened up the corral and put me in with the other riders. Isabella had me at a trot and moving gracefully around the corral. But then it got serious, they got us out and taped a number on Isabella's back (#103), We waited and the announcer called, "Isabella G riding Arica now entering the ring". I was really nervous, but I had to make Isabella look good in front of her friends. She warmed me up around the ring and went towards a jump. She made me jump to early, and my back hooves broke the rail and made me fall. The crowd gasped and stood up. Isabella's parents jumped the railing and her friends did that to rushing towards us. I rolled but couldn't stand up. Went I looked at her she had a bloody nose. I blacked out for 5 minutes and the veterinarian and a few others rushing towards me and having me get loaded into the vets truck and rushed to the clinic.

Hoped yall' liked it!

The Black Mare
Varonnica

I saddled up Luna with my other to friends, Kristi and Hope, to go for a ride on the trails. We were just learning how to ride on Western saddles and we thought we can take them on a joy ride. Kristi rode a buskin gelding named Buck and Hope rode a mare named Queenie. We came up to a field of wild grass and something caught my eye. "What is it Isabella"? Kristi asked. "I think its a horse. Now my would a horse be out here in the middle of nowhere"? Hope asked. "I don't know". The mare was a pitch black with eyes like stars, they gleamed at us and then I turned my head to Hope and turned back, and she was gone. "Did you see that"? I asked them. "Yeah". They both replied to me. "Isabella its almost time for breakfast back at the stable, lets go". Hope said. Luna turned back to the stables and we started our way back to the barn. DING, DING, DING!! "Just in time". Kristi said while the breakfast bell rang. We took off our horses tack and turned them lose in the pasture while we ate. After we ate we cleaned out tack and did a few jumping lessons. The day swallowed the morning and then it became dark and Mrs. Sands allowed all of us riders to sleep in the hayloft.
"When it gets to morning I'm going after the horse". I said to my friends. "Wait the black horse we seen today? Yes". I replied. They rolled their eyes and went to sleep. And then I did.
It got to morning and my friends woke up to me getting dressed. "What are you doing Isabella"? Hope asked rubbing her blue eyes. "I told you I'm going after the black mare. Isabella you cant". Hope said in a distant tone. "Look, I'm just going to sneak out, Ok? If anyone asked where I am just say I'm using the restroom. Ugh, fine". They both replied to me. So I tacked up Luna and went back to the meadow we last seen her at.

THUD! I watch yet another rider hit the ground. A jet black mare prances proudly away from the guy catching his breath on the ground. I turn to my parents. "THIS is her?" I ask. They nod silently.

A woman in tan breeches,a white button and black field boots walks to us. Not a hair escapes her flawless french braid, nothing stains her breeches, shirt or boots. I look at my slightly wrinkled baby blue polo and black breeches, my brown paddock boots and half chaps have mud caked on them. I finger a stray hair from my low ponytail. The woman flashes a friendly smile and extends a hand to my parents. "My name is Isabelle. I take it you're the James'?" she asks.

My dad shakes her hand. "Yes. My name is Keith and this is my wife Hannah." They both shake her hand. Isabelle turns to me.

"I'm Sienna." I shake her hand. It's warm and tough from years of riding.

"Your looking at Good-bye?" She asks surprised. After that show in the arena, I didn't blame her.

I nod shyly. "Well, let's see what she thinks of you." she looks at my parents. "She was very attached to her jockey. I think Sienna here might remind her of her." Isabelle walks into the arena and Good-bye trots up her her, tossing her mane to reveal a tiny white star high on her forehead. The mare whinnies proudly as Isabelle leads her to me. As soon as Good-bye sees me, she stops, ears flicking back and forth rapidly. "She does this every time she sees a new person." Isabelle explains. I stay still, waiting for Good-Bye to make up her mind. The mare relaxes and lowers her head. She walks up to me and sniffs my arm gently. She smells to pocket in my breeches and nudges it. I pull out the horse cookie I had stashed in there.

"You're a smart girl, aren't you?" I feed her the vanilla flax treat and she carefully lips it out of my hand and backs a step to crunch it.

"She likes you. Do you want to hop up?" I look at her. In response, I put on my helmet.

I check the stirrup length and mount up. Isabelle walks to my side and puts a hand on my leg. "She has a sensitive mouth and likes to go left." she explains.

"Thanks." Isabelle steps back and I sit on Good-Bye, feeling her body as she stands. So far, so good. I squeeze my heels gently and Good-Bye starts to walk. Her gait is insanely smooth and she moves perfectly beneath me. After a couple of laps, I ask for a trot. Her transition is exactly as I ask her. I start to post instantly and Good-Bye rounds her back slightly and moves like a Trakhener. Again, after a couple of laps, I ask for a canter. Again, her tranistion is flawless. Her canter is a perfect rocking horse canter. During this whole time, her ears are forward and she's relaxed. I gently ask her to change direction while cantering and her body moves a gentle U and she continues cantering. I ask her to trot and, finally, to walk. I bring her to a stop beside my parents and Isabelle.

"What did you think?" asks my mother.

"She was perfect." I pat her neck and Good-Bye rounds her neck and nickers.

"I think she likes you. How about some jumps? If you think she's good at ground work..." Isabelle smiles cryptically.

"Sure." Isabelle sets up two verticals about 2ft tall and a smaller oxer. I circle Good-Bye at a canter, feeling the mares tension. I ask her to go to the first vertical and she pops over it quickly at the perfect time. I didn't even have to ask. The same happens with the other two jumps. I walk her back to the group on the sidelines. "Wow."

"I know." Smiles Isabelle. She turns to my parents. "What did you think? If you buy her though, she does come with a companion. Good-Bye doesn't like being alone. She's fine without Fly if you're riding either, but overall, not a happy pony. Let Me Fly is a VERY sweet horse. She's also a Thoroughbred and grew up with Good-Bye. The poor thing can't jump to save her life. But she's a very good dressage horse." I look at my parents.

"Go try her."

Chapter One

Riley rolled around on her bed, in the middle of the night. She sat up and rubbed her eyes. "Why can't I fall asleep?!" Riley asked herself, she laid back onto her bed, and tried to fall asleep when a big bang came from the kitchen. She sat right up with eyes wide open! She whipped the covers off, and walked slowly to the door. Riley opened her door, and quietly walked down the white rusted stairs. When she made it to the bottom, her eyes zoomed around the place. While looking around the room she saw a figure in the corner of her eyes. She turned around to where she had seen the figure but nothing was there but white powder dashed around the floor. Riley went over to look at the powder, and when she reached it she was surprised with a hit on the head with a pan. All she heard was her scream echo through her mind, and the door shutting. All she saw was a person running out of the kitchen door, as fast as she could breath! When she opened her eyes their was a bright light shining into her eyes. It was all so blurry, she opened them all the way but it didn't help!. She sat up and rubbed her eyes, as she looked around, now her eyes came clear. She was now in a doctor's office, with her grandparents seating in seats next to the hospital bed.
"What happened?!" Riley asked. Riley's grandmother (Dolly came over to her and faced her, she started talking to Riley but no words came out of her grandmothers mouth.
"Grandpa why is grandma not talking?" Riley turned to her papa. It seemed like he didn't hear her, he was just looking to the floor in disappointment. Then the doctor handed Riley a notebook, it had words on it saying; 'Riley you got hit pretty hard, so you blacked out and went into a coma for four days.'

Then it said on the bottom wright anything you want to say on this notebook... She started writing, then she handed it to the doctor it said: 'Why do I have to do this? And why can't I hear? Or speak for that matter!?' It told. He wrote some more and handed it back, it read; 'Riley I don't know any other way to tell you... You are deaf...'

Chapter Two
Losing Apart Of You

Riley blinked a few times, then jumped off the hospital bed.
"What do you mean I am deaf!? No no! I can't be! I can't-I-I-I can't!' she yelled out with tears flowing down her cheeks. What seemed to her like yelling and talking seemed to them like lip-talking while crying. Dolly came up to Riley and rapped her arms around Riley.
"God please help me! God please help me! God please help me!" Repeated around and around in her head. After she calmed down they explained everything to Riley through the notebook. When they were finished Riley was brought in food, and Dolly and her grandfather (Robert) said goodbye and left. After she was finished eating dinner she was put to bed, in the hospital.
The next morning bright and early she eat breakfast and Molly and Robert came and took her away from the hospital back to the ranch. She slowly walked up the stairs and into her room, she stood in the door way for a few seconds, then Robert poked her shoulder and she moved on. She sat on her bed, and her papa sat next to her. He held her hand in his tight, and wrote five special words on the notebook, and handed it to Riley he waved goodbye, and walked back down stairs. Those five words would change her life forever, it read 'Nothing is Impossible with God!' Riley held the notebook close to her heart and laid back in her bed. A half hour later Riley walked back down the stairs, and out the door. She had on her rain boots and a sweatshirt. She walked to the barn and opened it up. She walked in and was let down with disappointment. The familiar noises of the friendly animals was like a blanket of love being laid over her... But now she felt cold without it. She shrugged the disappointment off, and walked over to the third stall to the left. Waiting there for her was a beautiful Arabian stallion, tall and handsome horse. She unlocked the stall door with a greeting smile, as she kissed the stallion's nose. He whinnied a greeting back, but she was not aware. She hugged the horse's neck and began to cry.
"I am deaf! I am really deaf! I don't get it! I had to get hurt at the highlight of my carer! When I am on the top of my game! But now, I will never be able to enter. I wont be able to hear someone call my name, or talk at interviews, I wont be able to hear when the gun is shot for the riders to go, or talk to anyone! I am missing half of my life now! I wish I left the noise alone that night, at least that girl wouldn't have hurt me!" Then something interrupted her thoughts when she felt a vibration. She looked to the barn door, and she saw her grandfather motioning to her to come. She kissed the tip of her horse's nose, and locked the stall door and followed her papa.

I will enter chapter three next mouth thanks! :)

A Day in the life of a Mare

The humans continue to lock me up. They throw food at me twice a day like i'm some kind of animal. Who do they think they are messing with!? I could take them out like an ant. Oh well. They have brainwashed the geldings into thinking they are angels but I am too intelligent to fall for there carrot-filled tricks. Although they like to mock us mares by joking that we like the geldings when clearly I was kicking him to get him and his lack of intelligence away from my area of the pasture! Well -- might as well not strain myself over it. Until next time,

Hi JC! People have been telling me that you can write an article for the CPP magazine. If its true, I would like your opinion for this one. The title is 'How to care For your Rabbit'.

Why buy a rabbit?

Rabbits are vary easy to care for, they don't have much of a huge meal like horses and cows they nearly eat 1-2 pounds of food per day! And, like all animals, they need plenty of extra size everyday for at least 30min-1hour. Rabbits are a good start out for kids at least 8+. And are wonderful house or outside pets. But they need to be in a big cage or 'Hatch'.

~Feeding your rabbit~

Rabbits love to eat fruit, veggies, and there natural pet food. When serving your rabbit food, always say there name quietly and move slowly and say good girl/boy. If your rabbit runs, you might have moved to fast or made a loud sound. Always check on your rabbits food and water everyday and clean out your hatch, Or else flies will attract to the rabbit and rabbits could die from a messy cage or to many flies.

~Personality and casual habits~

Your rabbit may eat its own droppings because of poor diet or not enough extra size. This is a regular rabbit habit that even wild ones do! Rabbits aren't really that social. And females are dominate, sometimes they dominate the males. Casual rabbit personality or 'Pecking Order', that all animals have. Including horses.

~Life span~

The life span of a rabbit depends on its breed. A Alaskan German shorthair has a life span about 4-7 years at the most. With little kids, they need to be strong for their rabbits passing and be prepared.
Rabbits are great for kids who have a heart for them and actually have the guts to clean after their rabbit. Rabbits desicrate, (Go to the bathroom), a lot and if your rabbit has dirriah, then contact your local vet and have a few tests done. This may happen because of the diet and to much laziness and way to much food and not enough extra size.

~Family~

Rabbits can mate anytime in the year and their gestation period is 28-29 days. The females are called does, males bucks, and the babies are called kits. They can have up to 16-18 kits. Some mostly 4-6. Yep, a BIG family. : )

~Bad things about wild rabbits~

Wild rabbits such as desert cottontail, eastern cottontail, jackrabbit, and more go and nest near farms. They bad thing is that they eat and destroy the farmers crops and cost them more then 2000$ per year. In that case, they kill the rabbits. Some do it for meat, sport, or just for fun. The only time you can shoot them is months that end in the word 'ER'. But please don't shoot nor bother these inacent creatures. They are here for a reason. They eat dead weeds and keeps the grass short for nature. Their abbondoned burrows help the other important creatures as well. Thank you for reading this article! -Varonnica

Do you like it? It may be a little gross in some ways but that's nature! Its just like horses. These are just some tips on rabbits and what they do and how to properly care for them. Even if its not true, I still wanted to know if you liked it.

SIERRA'S SURPRISE
by GET_OVER_IT
Sierra woke to the morning, sunlight pouring through her bedroom window. She was excited because today was september fourth her 12th Birthday. She quickly made her bed and got dressed. She skipped to the kitchen where both of her parents were drinking coffee. "Good morning! mom, dad."Sierra said "Happy birthday, honey", mother said " Happy birthday" said dad
"thanks!" Sierra said "I made your favorite, chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast", said Mom. "they're on the stove"
Sierra ate her pancakes while her parent drank their coffee.(sierra was wondering were her presents could be)
Interupting her thoughts her father said,"when you're finished eating i want you to go rake the yard." Sierra groaned but said," Ok, Dad." (this was not how she planned to spend her birthday.) when Sierra finished eating, she put her dishes in the dishwasher. Threw on a jacket and boots and went outside. What she saw made her freeze. There, tied to the oak tree was a chestnut pony gelding with a flaxen mane and tail, he had a big red bow around his neck, and a brand new blue halter on.
By the time she was able to make herself go forward her parents were by her side. "do you like your birthday present?" asked mom. All Sierra could do is nod, and pet 'Sundance' as she had already decided to call him. "would you like too take him for a ride?" her father asked. "Yes" Sierra said. So she tacked him up in his brand new birthday tack and had the best ride of their life!

Hope chapter 1: Waiting
by: Jannah rose

The poor black horse his coat dull and pale not the dashing jet black it should be.... He is abandoned to the old pasture where his owner never feeds him... his owner beats him when he refuses to leave the paddock and go into the barn where it is tight and stuffy the stall never gets mucked and is full of wet straw and mud...... One day his hope came......

Amber rode her red bike on the untraveled dirt path through the woods. The autumn wind whistling it's sweet tune as she rode on. The burnt orange and crimson leaves gently fluttered down to the ground ready for a winter's nap. She quickly turned off the path into a bed of leaves. She quickly jumped off her bike, tripping and landing with an "ooff". She got up and brushed off her denim jacked and jeans. She jogged for what seemed ten minuets when she reached an old paddock with rusty abandoned barbwire fence. She stopped right in front of it. "Here boy" she called. "It's me, Amber" she reassured him softly.
"I have something for you she said. Reaching into the pocket of her jacket she pocket she pulled out a shiny red apple. "I got it for you- at the store- with my own money!" she exclaimed. "It costed two dollars and 50 cents! I guess I'm just lucky mom let me get it". She said softly the black horse slowly walked over to her sniffing the shiny treat. The black horse was Amber's only friend. - she wasn't very popular, and her mom... well-she's not the nicest of people....
The black horse took the apple eagerly he bobbed his head as if to say "Thank you I am enjoying this very much". Amber giggled as the feel of his tickly whiskers on the soft palm of her hand. "You're my only friend" she whispered in a voice only the horse could hear. She reached up and hugged his large, soft head for a long time...... TO BE CONTINUED

Valuable Friendship Chapter 1: Evolving friends
By: Varonnica

I grabbed my jacket of pink and white horse printings and walked out the door with my bag of apples and watermelon rinds. I mounted on my purple bike as if mounting on a horse. I never had one. We were not as rich as the other kids at school with horses. Becky Jeans was the richest girl at school with tons of horses but never rode them nor took care of them. She would always get mad at them of they got water or slobber on her. The ranch began at the edge of the town and school with white railing and tall wild grass growing up and around it with little buds of weed flowers trying to bloom. Ponies and horses would come by their and graze on them. Close enough to pet and get away with it without Becky seeing. She never rode nor did anything for them. But yet, never let anybody touch them. Not even her friends. So I decided to go see a skinny beat-up horse Becky disliked vary much. I always got food for her. Of course she wasn't saddle broke. But I went there anyways. I approached the white railing and wild weeds and small amounts of grapevines near the horse. She was a chestnut mare with many ribs showing and not much muscle a normal horse should have. She never got her food because the other horses would hog and eat all of it. I got off my bike and opened up the bag. I then whistled and smooched to her to get her attention. Her ears picked up and she went over to inspect what was in my hands. She got up to the rail and sniffed my cold hands. She then took a bite of the watermelon rind and white foam started coming out of her mouth while she chopped her way to the bottom of the bag. "Sorry girl no more". She still looked hungry and looked sad. I then thought I could give her my apple for lunch. I gave her it and she ate the whole thing in two bites. I patted her sun-Damaged neck and petted her wet cold muzzle and kissed her a goodbye. I started to cry while I looked back at her. I knew she was still hungry. But I couldn't do anything. We weren't rich enough to own horse property and buy food for her and supply her with everything while feeding and taking care of ourselves. I then had to make a plan to keep her alive.

Horse Angel – A True Story
By: BriberyLove

Last summer marked the first year after I lost my horse, exactly one week after my birthday. I met him for the first time back in 2008 and it was love at first sight. It was also pretty neat that he happened to be my favorite breed of horse, Thoroughbred. He had a sad past though, because he had a greedy owner who only cared about money, and he was mistreated. Luckily, he was saved and brought to the farm to live out the happy life he deserved.
We had an instant connection, he and I. We got along well, and were stuck like glue. As I said, it was love at first sight. He liked to follow me around a lot. I never got to ride him, because he was afraid of tack because of the things he endured with his previous owner. That was okay though. We did everything else together. He loved mints, they were his favorite treat. He loved to go for jogs around the yard together. He liked playing invisible lead, where he followed me around on his own free will, though it was a pain when I was trying to get a picture of him. He was also incredibly smart. We shared an amazing bond.
Through the time, he had a rollercoaster of a time, going up and down in health. One day, we thought for sure that all his problems were gone and that he would be okay. If I wanted, he could officially become my horse. I wanted nothing more.
Sadly, that wasn’t the end of his problems. He got sick again, and it was worse this time. You would never know that he was sick though, because he would still run and play like any other healthy horse. Though no one could find out what was wrong, not even the best. Then one day, exactly one week after my birthday, I got the terrible news. The vet had found out what was wrong with him; it was cancer. By then, it was far too late. There wasn’t anything anyone could do.
Last summer, as it marked one year later, I went to the farm on a cloudy day. Thunder was rolling and a storm was coming. I went out to visit him, and started crying. I couldn’t believe it, one whole year without him. I sat on my knees in the dirt as the tears flowed and suddenly the clouds broke apart and the sun came down through the trees, right on that exact spot where he was. I looked up and wiped my tears and I knew. It was him, telling me not to cry, because it was okay, because he was okay. He was no longer in pain and no matter what, he was always going to be with me. So there was no more reason to cry. Only when I stopped, did the sun vanish behind the clouds again.
Even now, as I near two years, I still get sad and cry. It’s never easy to lose a friend and I may never get over my first horse. But he is happy and pain free now and yes, he will always be with me. I can and will love horses again, he would want me to, especially unwanted horses like he was. He will always be my first, and the most special horse.
No matter where I go, or what I do, I know, I will always have my horse angel with me.
