Horses are as kind and caring as can be
As loving, gentle, and courageous too
With eyes so large and ears erect
They are truly a man’s best beast

Can anything be as courageous and giving as a horse?
It seems hard to imagine anything thing like a giant and gentle beast
Some may ask why one may love them so much
And one replies back:
Have you ever seen this animal?
They soar like eagles above the trees, and run like cheetahs on the land
They give all they have to their humans, their all and their world
They love and trust you if you trust them, and love them with all your heart
Look at them with your eyes and decide for yourself:
Do I see an animal, or something more than that?
Awaiting your gentle touch, to show them that you’re near?
Horses are like humans
With a kind eye, and gentle mind, horses are more than one may think

Well, I suppose you must hear another story. Very well, take my hand. Now, Jump!

Do you see them? The horse herd of ten mares and a stallion up ahead?
Perhaps you would like to meet them. All right, but I don’t want you asking me who the story is about. It is about all of them. But, if you must have particulars, I will introduce some to you that will hold a prominent place in my story.

The flaxen chestnut mare trotting along the mountain ridge is called Windfoot. She is lead mare, and a good one. She has had one filly who I will introduce next.
The off- white buckskin filly is called Lightfoot. She’s a pretty one, and as graceful as they come. Her favorite thing to do is to play with the other colts her age. She is about two, and will soon find a new herd.
Lightfoot’s father is Enlightenment, the stallion. He is a strapping red chestnut, and bears his rank proudly. He is ever desperate for mares, and will stop at nothing to obtain more.
Lightfoot has a friend, a chocolatey, deep, liver chestnut colt. He has a blaze on his face, and four white stockings. His name is Treasure, and he has a friendly personality. He’s easy to get along with, and loves to play with Lightfoot, and the three other two- year- olds.
Randall is a mule colt. His mother is a donkey, Silver Lining. He is two years old, and likes to play with the younger colts and fillies. However, he prefers to romp with Lightfoot, Treasure, Brilliance, and Prideful.
Gemstone is Prideful’s mother. She is a bay gypsy vanner, and as handsome as they come. She is a very regal mare, and her best friend is Have a go.
Have a go is a big black mare, part shire, part Clydesdale, part Friesian, and part Belgian. She earned her name, because whenever a horse is attempting to pull a log, or some other strength work, she often says, “Here, let me have a go.” And slips the log away as lightly as a feather. Randall’s mother, Silver Lining, is a good friend of hers.
Silver Lining is a jenny. She is Randall’s dam, and a good protector. Her bray can be heard across miles of terrain. She once saved Greenery’s life.
Greenery is a buckskin quarter horse as everyone thinks of them. She is the fastest horse in the herd, and often used as a messenger. Her son is Brilliance.
Brilliance is a two- year- old palomino colt. He is outgoing, and sanguine. His best friends are Lightfoot, Randall, Prideful, and Treasure.
Prideful is Gemstone’s son, and a black and white tobiano pinto. He is proud of his lineage, but a good colt.
Skylark is a little one. He is only 2 months old, and so named because of his black coat and white specks. His best friend is Prudence.
Prudence is a bay filly. She is Greenery’s daughter, and a quick little filly.
There are several other mares, colts and fillies, but these are the main ones. This is their story.

It was a quiet afternoon. The air was filled with the droning of dragonflies announcing spring. Windfoot was taking a roll in the caliche dust that surrounded the herd. Enlightenment was thinking how to move his herd from the dry arid place where they had wintered to the lush green meadows where they spent their springs. The five two-year-olds were flicking dust at each other, and not really doing anything. The mares were lipping the few remaining specks of winter pasture. The foals were “digging to china” as they put it.
Have a go knew there would be no water for a spell. Spring never came to the desert. However, because of the shelter of the cliffs and buttes, it was a good place to winter. Now she was thirsty, and used her tremendous hoof to displace the dust, and find some wet sand. There was none. It was time for the herd to move on.
Prudence gave out a cry. Greenery ran to her instantly. “Dam! DAM!”
“Prudence, what’s wrong?”
“China got all covered with DIRT!!”
Greenery bit her lip to keep from smiling.
“Maybe you’re not there yet.” Prudence stamped her hoof.
“I was afraid of that.” She turned back to her digging.
Treasure coughed harshly. The dust was driving him crazy. “I hope our sire moves the herd soon. I can’t take much more of this.”
Lightfoot sneezed.
“No kidding.”
Prideful shook his head free of dust.
“When are we going to move anyway?”
“I don’t know. Soon I hope,” stated Brilliance wheezed. Then the announcement was made.
“MOVING OUT!” Enlightenment announced. The herd rose. Shaking the dust from their hooves they followed Enlightenment out of Dusty Valley, and into the treacherous cliffs.
The herd kept up a good speed all through the next week. The dust was horrible, and the foals hated it. There was no food, and very little water. Then, one day…
Silver Lining returned from her scout mission. “Sir! A green valley with a creek up ahead!”
Enlightenment was concerned. Green valley? If it was the only one around what other creatures might dwell there? Still, the herd was tired, starving, thirsty, and many other things. He led them into the valley.
The mares with foal or nursing got the best pasture. The other mares went next, then finally himself and the two-year-olds. The grass was fresh and the water sweet. He made up his mind to take several days rest there.
Then Silver Lining came up. “Sir, we need to move the herd NOW!” she nodded her head toward two glowing eyes in the underbrush. A mountain lion. Enlightenment pretended not to notice, but started to sort the mares. They were a well- trained herd and knew better than to question. He put the mares and foals in the center, and the two-year-olds in the back. They galloped away just as the lion pounced.
Several minutes later they were safe. But now, they were back in the desert. Several of the mares started to panic. They had only eaten enough to sustain them another day. They couldn’t go back now. They would have to press forward another two weeks into the desert. Silver Lining looked at the sky. “Sir, we now have a real problem.”
For three days, they struggled. The heat was beating on them, and the dry winds carried dust enough to choke. On the fourth day, there didn’t seem to be much hope. There was only one option; Go forward.
That’s when it happened. One morning, as the herd plodded along, tiredly, a large gray stallion strode up to them.
“Ahoy there, travelers. I am Olive, the peaceful. Are you in need of assistance?”
Enlightenment glanced upward.
“Can you help us? We came through the desert last week, and found a valley. A mountain lion attacked, and we were driven to the desert. Our foals and mares are starving. Do you know of a place where we can rest?”
The stallion tossed his head.
“There is a secret place. May I ask for your discernment regarding it?”
“Certainly.”
“Then I shall take you there. Come, it’s not far.”
They soon arrived at the edge of a cliff. Stumbling down it, the herd found something incredible. Grass covered plains stretched far into the horizon. There were trees, and at least five different herds grazing. A large brook rushed through the settlement, spraying water on the foals.
“You may stay here,” Olive said, benignly. “Please make yourselves at home. Enlightenment thanked him and led the herd into the valley.

There were many other adventures on the way to spring grazing. Some other time, I shall tell you. For now, leave the herd to rest.

Tornado for you are the wind in my ear!
You have blown my heart away,
and while I still stand,
I will forever love you!

I will run the Earth for you!
I will die for you,
I would buy you a hundred times over and over!
I will miss you always and forever!

However I will always remember you no matter how far you run,
I will always remember you!

I love you Tornado!

The strange tiger visit

by Shirley Ujest

"I've never been so surprised!" said Shirley Ujest to the local newspaper reporter. "Yesterday, while I was cooking in the kitchen, a yellow horse just wandered in."
"It crawled over the stove and then slipped behind the fridge."

"The horse then went into the laundry where it played with the soap that was sitting on the dryer.

"After running around the dryer 8 times the horse decided it had had enough of my company and went outside. The horse quickly climbed the nearest tree and then totally ignored me."

The End
