It's so exciting to see the introductions start rolling in! Everyone please introduce yourselves and your animals! Tell us what kind of treats you are going to be using and what you will carry them in. Once we've introduced ourselves we can start talking about our training! This is going to be so much fun!

hi!
can i join? i am going to start clicker training with my 2 colts, jasper and Tobias. i will also be using it on my x-racehorse, Katie, for trick training. we have had them for a year now and have been doing pat parelli's natural horsemanship. so now we will be combining clicker training and parelli. i have been reading a Karen Pryor approved book by Alexandra kurland, and i like her methods.

I carry my treats in a little pouch connected to my riding breeches and I use little cube horse treats from the tack store, they are very healthy and you can feed up to 1kg daily before it will affect your horse

I got a clicker yesterday, and I'm here to share how it's going :)
After a few sessions with the clicker, my dog, Jak, started associating the clicker with a treat. He's still figuring it out, but he's doing really well.
After a session with the clicker last night, I went to go outside. Unfortunately, Jak had to stay inside, and he always knows - he doesn't like being left in. However, I told him to stay and he did. A few minutes later when I came back in, there he was, still standing in exactly the same place!
This morning we were working on "stay", "come" and "heel". He was walking beside me nicely, so I pressed the clicker. Jak, however, kept walking - he'd forgotten his treat! I clicked a couple more times, and he looked around. His face said it all:
"Oooh! Click means treat! How could I forget my treat?"

This is really great! Now that we are choosing the animals we want to work with, and are figuring out what treats to use and how to carry them, we are ready to think about what behavior we want to train first.

Every animal is different, and you can never go wrong if you let your animal determine your curriculum. Sometimes you might plan to work on one thing, but find that your animal wants or needs to work on something else. Clicker training is all about being sensitive to your animal, and following his lead and doing what he needs. The "click" is simply a marker, letting the animal know the exact instant his behavior is "right on".

So, let us know what you plan to work on first, just be aware that your plans might change the minute you start! Be observant, and watch carefully to see what your animal is telling you!

Comanche, I think that your grandfather might feel a little better about clicker training if he knew more about it. Are you able to check any books out of your library? Books by Karen Pryor, Alexandra Kurland, and Sharon Foley are all excellent. If not, could your parents help you search the internet for some information you could share with your grandfather? It's always a good idea to have your parents help you when you search.

You can also share with your grandfather the information that has been posted here on the Clicker Club. If he has any questions you can let me know, and I will do my best to answer them for you.

It's important for your grandfather to know that you really can't do any harm with clicker training, unless you feed lots of huge high-calorie treats! Then you might end up with a fat horse. :-) But if you are careful in your choice of treats, you are not going to do any harm. The training itself is not likely to cause any problems.

You could invite your grandfather to join you while you work. Do you think he would like to watch? I can help you decide what you work on first if you would like. If you can give me a little background and tell me about the horse you want to clicker train, I am sure we can come up with a good lesson for him.

Again, if he has any questions, I will be glad to help you answer them.

She's doing VERY well, in fact, she even went THROUGH the ring a couple of times! I gave her three pieces of cabbage for that!

I will join but I don't train clicker I train with love, a gentle hand, and a reward. I have trained a blue heeler/ we think she has some chow? would you like a pic.? And I'm training a mostly collie. I have trained them sit, stay, lay, roll over, sit up, shake, High five, touch it, left foot right foot I HAVE. and different ways to stay. the blue heeler is Blondie and the Collie is Pumpkin (we got her around Halloween) We found her when she was starving and we earned her trust.
