Thanks for asking, Mac. Well, my riding instructor said since I'm just beginning to show that I have to do a beginner walk/ trot class. NO WAY to mess that up. But still. Kinda nervous. Wait, no, make that REALLY nervous.

Some more tips on showing ;)

-Don't wear your good showing clothes while grooming your horse/pony. Wear some old clothes and shoes, or even some track pants and a jacket over top of your show shirt and breeches. Don't wear your boots until you're ready to mount up.

-Be nice to your helpers, even if they don't know what they're doing. Okay, normally it would be kind of funny when your non-horsey parent is smiling at you while trying to put a pony's bridle on backwards, but not so much when you're trying to get ready for your first class - however, you should try to be nice. They're there for you, after all.

-Be a good sport. If you don't like the placing you got, don't corner the judge and demand answers. If you'd really like to know, just ask them, quietly, and when they're not busy, what you could do better next time.

-Be on your best behaviour, and make sure everyone with you is too. The old rule - if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Loud comments or angry outbursts at shows are incredibly embarrassing for everyone involved.

-Be on time!! Make sure you know when the class starts, and when you need to be there.

-From the time you enter the ring, you're being judged. Be attentive, and interested in what's going on (inside the ring - ignore family/friends/helpers outside the ring), and be aware of where other riders are - make sure you have enough space, and that you're giving them enough space.

-Don't look to see if the judge is looking at you. If they are and you've got your neck craned around, it won't be a good look.

-Be positive. If you're annoyed or upset, it will show.

-Remember to take your ribbons off your horse's neck before the next class! If you win ribbons, fantastic! But the judge doesn't want to know how well you placed in your last class. Get a friend to hold your ribbons for you.

-Be polite to everyone, especially the judge. When you're in the line-up, don't talk to other competitors. If they try to talk to you, smile and nod, but make it clear you're interested in the class you're in and not the brand of mane and tail shampoo you used.
