It was a beatiful sunny day at the Martins ranch, the sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the animals were all up and alert. The light just seemed to come right through the window of Kyras room. Suddenly she awoke to a delicious smell coming from downstairs. She got dressed and went on down. ''Hey dad!'' said Kyra happily. Her dad was fixing some scrambled eggs and bacon! ''Morning sweetie.'' responded her dad in a suprisingly happy voice. ''What are you so happy about today?'' asked Kyra teasingly. She already knew why. ''Well todays the day we get a new horse from out of town!'' said her father happily. ''Kyra you better eat fast you need to do your chores before the horse gets here.'' said her father. ''OK dad!'' said Kyra! She went off to clean the horses pens.

Suddenly she walked past one of the pregnant mares pen and realized she had already given birth to the foal! The foal was quite cute. She ran inside and told her dad to come out to see the foal. He went to the mares pen and checked the foal over. ''He is pretty thin'' said Kyra's dad. ''And I don't think she will be able to nurse it properly'' he said. ''Why not dad?'' asked Kyra sadly. ''Well it seems as if she is too weak to handle it'' '' We might have to get the ol' bottle out'' said her dad. ''OK, I will go and get it''. ''I will call Mrs. Benton'' said his dad.

So they both went off to do what they needed to do. When they were done they decided to sit on the porch and wait for the vet to pull up. She finally did after about 30 minutes. Mrs. Benton went in to check the foal out! ''Well, I have some sad news.'' she said with a sad look on her face. ''Well what is it?'' ''Well, we are going to have put the mare to sleep.'' Mrs. Benton said. ''If it is in the best interest of the horse, I guess we will.'' said her dad. ''OK.'' said Mrs. Benton.

A few years had passed and the foal had gotten bigger and was now called Bandit. He was now a full grown stallion! He loved to run and jump.

Kyra was thinking of entering him in the state jumping competition. She decided to go small at first and just enter him in some local competitions for pratice. They ended up winning the alot of the competitions. They had one more competition left until the states.

They prepared long and hard for the next competition and it soon came up. On the day of the competition Kyra was walking home and all the sudden the Bonto twins came up behind her. ''Your never going to get anywhere with that runt you call a horse'' said one of the twins. They were always teasing her and telling her Bandit would never make it. ''Yea, so just give up, because all that horse is good for is dog food.'' said the other twin. That really upset her. She ran all the way home and went to her room.

She woke up the next morning and went downstairs and saw her grandpa. She always liked her grandpa, he always helped her through hard times. Even when her mother died. ''Why the sad face Kyra?'' asked her grandpa. ''The Bonto twins said really mean things to me about Bandit yesterday.'' ''Like what?'' said her grandpa. ''Like, that the only thing Bandit was good for is dog food, and that I shouldn't even try to win at states and I'm not gonna!'' said Kyra. ''Yes you are Kyra!'' said grandpa! ''OK, since you say I should try, I will!'' said Kyra!

It was the day of the states and everyone was getting ready to race! The race was about to start! Every horse was already at the finish line! Suddenly the race started! Bandit was already in first and the race was almost over. And suddenly another contestant in the race ran right into bandit but he kept going! The finish line was finally in view and Bandit crossed it and won!

The First Trail Ride
By: bay speed

One day i was saddling up my horse Ruby for a trail ride. We were going on a ride on a trail by are house with some borders. Ruby had never been on a trail before. We head down the rode and suddenly a bird flys down from a pine tree and spooks Ruby and so Ruby dose a sidepass to the right. I calmly turn her head to the left where the bird came from. Once she was calm and relaxed I squeezed softly to get her to walk with the rest of the group.

By the time we were back with the group we were hitting the woods. It was bright and welcoming. Ruby was a little nervous at first but calmed down when she saw the other horses go first. Ruby calmly walked through the trail and suddenly I asked for a calm trot. Ruby blast in to a canter and I sat back in the saddle entil i got what I wanted.

Ruby got along with the other horses Conala, Artisto, hope and Vander. Vander is my mom friesian sport horse. I love him and his flowing mane and how relaxed and friendly he was. But I could never like him as much as my POA, Ruby.

As we went through the trail I admired the way my horse calmly went through the rest of the trail. She was awsome and I had so much fun on the trail with my relaxed horse. She is not perfect but who is ,right?

As we got home I unsaddled Ruby and gave her a peppermint treat. Then I through my arms around Ruby and gave her a big hug. I told her you are the best Ruby! I love you! As I put her away for the night I glanced at her paddock and ran to the house to get ready for bed. THE END

My name is Anna. I don't have a pony, but my neighbors do, her name is Star, and my brother and I can ride whenever we want. They also have a horse, Doll. So Peter rides Doll and I ride Star. One day we were riding along the creek. It was beautiful, the birds were chirping and singing to us as we rode and there were yellow and purple and white violets everywhere and there were dragonflies and butterflies! We heard splashing in the creek.
"What's that noise?" I asked.
"Look Anna! Mallard ducks!"
I looked. And there were indeed ducks. It was a mother and father. The morning sun was glinting off the male's beautiful iridescent green head. They swam away as we watched. I nudged Star into a canter and we swerved away from the creek running into the pasture where the Belgians were. We rode around them and looked at the darling, brand new little Jacob and then Trixie and Sunny came. Oh dear. They snapped at Star and Doll and Doll backed right into Star jumped back and kicked at Trixie. It wasn't pleasant. Then we rode off, or tried to. Peter rode off on Doll, but suddenly Star's herd instinct kicked in. Sure, she'd turn her head where I was asking her to go, but then she'd sidestep in the opposite direction. I was getting frustrated. But I stopped Star. I turned her in the direction of the creek, where Peter was waiting, thinking a was the weirdest thing to be taking so long. So I made Star go a couple steps in that direction and when she started sidestepping I turned her in a circle, pointed her at the creek, had her take a couple steps, turned her in a circle.... I repeated the process a couple of times and then she started listening to me I stopped being so forceful and praised her and we walked on. We rode around for a while and accidentally jumped a pallet and then we decided to go back by the creek. We were riding straight at the creek when suddenly a blue pointed object shot out of the creek like a bullet. Star spun around on her hind legs, nearly ditching me and galloped off. Doll spooked too, but not quite so much. Doll is a good cow horse, startled by little and very obedient. It took a bit for me to bring Star to a half and then we loped back to Peter. He said it had been a blue heron and it was that wing that had spooked Star. We rode along the creek once again and Star was still pretty spooked and she was acting sassy too. So we just stood a while to calm her down which really helped. We were riding along and we saw the heron standing on the side of the creek bank. Star eyed him nervously but did nothing. Good girl. We loped back and I remove my saddle and rode bareback a bit to cool her down. Then I let star out to pasture and pulled an apple out of my pocket and Star came to me and I fed her that little treat.
"Good Star. I don't care how naughty you are. You're the best pony in the world. Love you, bye."
