If you're allowed, lunge him and see if he does the same thing. If not, it could mean that he is thrown off-balanced when carrying a rider.

Also, if you know he is just being lazy, squeeze once, and if he doesn't respond, do the same squeeze followed by a smack behind your leg or on the rump.

Hmm, If she/he isn't too sensatve, give her/him a sharp kick. It's pretty hadr too hurt a horse unless you are trying too, Don't be afraid to be a little rough. When I first started riding Sioux, she tested me and tried every trick in the books and some that aren't, but I was firm, even a little rough and now she knows I'm the leader and loves me and will start on the tiniest cluck of my tongue, exactly how I want her to. She's good.

Use a crop. I rode a lazy horse this morning, but at the end, i made her trot and canter and jump with help from a crop.

thanks guys. i'm novice, though, and i've also read to put pressure on the bit so the horse will be more attentive to your commands.

yikes this advice without seeing you ride makes me woozy.

In English, you support the horse with the bit. In Western, the horse goes on a loose bit until you make a correction.

Don't use a crop all the time though. Make sure they are just being lazy before you do. Many times horses have good reasons for not doing things, like being afraid, and then a crop will NOT help! :)

I know not to use a crop to much, but if you horse is truly lazy, you want to use a crop to re-enforce your leg rather than kicking so that you can teach the horse to respond to squeezes rather than kicks
