Actually, since you mention it, there is something I'm not sure about.

I'm working on the games and things coz I've got a Gymkhana next Sunday with Misty (the horse I ride and might be buying).

Only thing is I'm not clear on how to give the signal for a collected canter. either that or Misty hasn't been taught that.

How do you get your horse to do a collected canter?

Alright lightning, here's something you can do. Lay on your back, sit up and bring your knees to your chest without your feet touching the ground, move around until you find a spot where you can sit without falling over. That is where you should sit in the saddle.

Well, I'm going to assume that you can already do a collected trot, because if you can't I would practice that first. I would at least start with a normal canter, and make sure that Misty is balanced. Also, this probably should not be the first canter of your ride. I would sit a little deeper, and a little bit more upright before you ask Misty to collect. Next, you should squeeze a little with you legs while squeezing your reins a bit, or pulling back a tiny bit. That probably sounds like mixed signals, but the squeezing is just to ensure that she doesn't stop. Also, rely on you instincts a little bit-if you feel that something I said isn't working, but something else would, try it! Also, if you don't know if she has been taught a collected canter, don't get frustrated with her. And, remember to end on a good note, and praise her if she does a good job.

No problem! That works for Mascot, but he collects really easily so it might not work for you, but you should try it.

Thanks Admin, I learned that when I first started riding so it comes naturally to me, but some people don't learn it because it's mainly Parelli that uses it. So I'm happy to help lightning with it :)

Thanks heaps lightning for you advice on the collected canter, it totally worked! We actually had to train her to respond to it actually coz im the first person who's needed collected paces when riding her. Thanks! :)
