Theres Always An Up and Theres Always A Down
aka TAAUTAAD

Taylor: "Yes!" I say barely audible. Finally something I'll ace. I walk back to Hope's stall and smile. "I'll go get your tack and then I'll come back okay girl?" I walk into the tack room and grab Hope's tack. I groom and tack up Hope in record time and lead her out of her stall. I feel her uneasiness, but I know how to control her freak outs so I wasn't too worried. I start to walk towards the arena keeping a close eye on Hope.

Miss Woodhaven: “Ok. You will get extra lessons.”
Lucy: I walk Leo out of line in flowing strides then stop.
Miss. Woodhaven: “Go.”
Lucy: my gray and white over rescue gelding moves into a trot. I post finding the right rhythm for his steady trot. At X we halt. I ask Leo to side pass first over then back. Then we trot off in a sitting trot. At the rail we track right. Then Leo and I pick up a nice collected right lead canter. His strides are smaller and faster than Stars. At the end of the ring we trot. When we reach the long side Leo moves into a canter with nearly no signal. I finish and trot to the end of the ring near the line and aim at the jumps. He sores over then ear pricked. I walk back to line.
Mr. Eli: “Nice riding.”
Lucy: “Thank you. It’s Leo mostly and Star my horses they make it easy.” I stroke Leo’s neck
Miss. Woodhaven: “Cool him out then you can stable him.”
Lucy: “Ok.” I ride Leo out of the ring and turn around before stopping to watch Kate.
Kate: When I here go the chestnut Journey leaps into her spell binding trot. I post her long floating strides. At X we halt neatly.
Lucy: I watch spell bound by my sister’s mare
Kate: I ask for a side pass and my mare neatly answers moving over and back in her floaty way. I ask for a trot. I sitting trot to the rail and track right. At the long side we take up a canter, she has a nice canter. Then at the end we trot to the next long side. The we canter again to the far end. Then we tort back over near the line. We do the jumps then leave the ring

Callie: *Shadow and I trot into the ring, his strides crisp, fast, smooth, my position making it look easy, the only tell-tale that Shadow hates this is the switch of his tail. We stop dead at X, his feat perfectly square, I salute, and his head seemingly randomly curves left and then he is smoothly walking across the arena. Then he stops, his head curves left and he is sidestepping back to X. My legs don't move, and he is suddenly in the fastest sittable trot, neck arched in a frame. We go to the rail and track right, then at the second long side we are cantering. Smooth, graceful, easy, fast. Shadow shakes his head out and snorts. In the corner he is easily back into a rising trot, happy now and lifting his legs elegantly. I sit one stride and he is in his counter-canter, slight outside bend, easy and smooth, but slower than before. He turns up the middle smoothly, curving around my leg. His ears prick up when he sees the 2 jumps and he speeds up, until I slow him a hair. He settles and flys, ears forward, knees square, hunter arc in textbook form, my head up, back slightly arched, elbows down, hands pressed into his crest, feet still in true hunter style. Four strides later we are in the air again, the definition of elegance and perfection. I halt Shadow with a bit of effort, salute again then drop my reins and pat both sides of his neck as we leave the ring.

Taylor: *I squeeze Hope into a steady trot and halt square on the X. I loosen my shoulders and keep a straight, but not stiff, back. I ask Hope to side pass to the right, my cues invisible, and then back to the left. Hope flicks back one ear and I know I have her full attention. I sit to Hope's perfect trot keeping my body aligned, my heels down, my hands still, and my chin straight. Hope and I reach the rail and we track right. I could not ask for more from Hope, every movement she makes is perfect. We reach the long side and I move my outer boot slightly behind the girth and Hope smoothly transitions into a comfortable canter. She moves fluidly and without mistake. It's times like these when I really wonder why she can act like a total jerk sometimes. The end of the ring approaches and within one stride Hope is trotting. Her trot is smooth and I post easily to it. When we reach the other long side of the arena I cue Hope for a canter again, this time on the left lead instead of the right. Hope moves impeccably and I feel her thoroughbred power, but still the elegance of an Arabian. I keep her canter steady and point her towards the two jumps. We reach the first jump and Hope rocks back onto her haunches before taking off. I keep my posture perfectly steady and my hands still as can be. We clear the first jump with inches to spare and Hope lands softly on the other side. I didn't think there could be a more perfect jump. I was wrong. The second jump Hope took was even better than the first. Her form matched that of an olympic stadium jumper. But, somehow better. After clearing the second jump I slow Hope and halt. I move Hope into an easy walk and we leave the arena.* "Good Girl!" I say not bothering to keep excitement out of my voice. "That was perfect. Somebody's getting an extra peppermint tonight." I say with a smile creeping onto my face.
