well, if you are planning on keeping your horse in your "backyard" then keep in mind that you need at least 1-2 acres to keep a horse out in a pasture because that is the way a horse lives, do you have a barn???
if so make sure that the stall is at least 12' by 12' or 12' by 10', that way there is enough room for your horse to turn around:)
do you know what breed you want or if you want a gelding or a mare??
I prefer geldings because mares tend to be feisty and for a first timer horse you will want a gelding.

also keep in mind that you want a horse that is at least 10 or older, and think of what you want to be able to do with it:)
like.......
jumping
showing
pleaure
dressage
driving
or something else:)
I hope you find your horse and there is a good horse site for asking questions about new horses, care, tack, and tons of other info!!!
it is called: TheHorseForum:)
I hope I did not get toooooo carried away:P

RM: I hope you get it worked out soon JC! I had noticed that I could not access my pals page when I had a new pal request and getting onto clubs and checking on my ponies takes forever. Hope you work everything out!

Thanks for your info GS! I have already thought everything out and this is the kind of horse I am looking for:

1. Gender: (preferably) a gelding.
2. Age: 10-15
3. Breed: Either a Quarter Horse, a Paint, a Morgan, or an Appaloosa.
4. Temperament: since I am not a very confident rider and I am extremely novice, I would prefer a quiet, gentle, well-schooled horse.
5. Riding: Pleasure. Maybe a few fair shows once and a while and 4-H.
6. Price: anywhere from 800$-4,000$

Pasture, hay, and grains: we have plenty of room for a pasture but the hay concerns me. We buy our hay from a store and they sometimes change their hay. I know that a slight change in hay can cause a 10% more chance for colic, so I will have to talk to my parents about getting hay from an actual farmer instead of from a store. With grains, I don't think I will be going all-out. Just enough to assure that my horse is getting the nutrients he needs to stay healthy.

For a barn, we have a medium-sized shed that holds my dad's motorcycle, his tools, our rabbits, chicks, hay, and grains. If my dad moved his motorcycle and tools, a sufficient stall would defiantly fit. The shed even has a convenient ramp.

Tack, grooming tools, etc.: I have none of these things. I would have to buy them and I would like to get them cheap. I already have an offer from someone that has a nice western saddle and bridle. And that leads me to another subject...

Should I go western or english? I have ridden and am familiar with english tack but I find western tack very comfortable. Which set of tack do you think a novice rider should use? Plus, I don't even know how to tack up a horse. 0_o

well, I preferably think that a English saddle is easier to tack up with, clean, and you also need to think about if you want to do jumping, cross-country, or dressage with your horse then you will want a English, because you can not jump in a western saddle:)

and also before you get your first horse you will want to take several lessons or have someone teach about horse management and care:)

I am looking around for riding lessons and things like that and everywhere I look it is so expensive! I bet that if I got my own job my dad would be so much more lenient. We do have a neighbor that has a horse, but we don't know them. :(
