Horse Of My Own
By Iamfree

Chapter One- Living In A Non-pet Family
"But dad!" I protested "If I don't get a horse this very day, I'm going to die!"
My dad sighed and folded the newspaper he had been reading "Honey, sweetheart, you must understand that me and your mother do want you to have a horse! We really do! But...right know with work and everything, getting a horse isn't even an option."
I frowned, furious. But not wanting my dad to get into this whole why teachers-didn't-get-payed-that-much speech, I dashed down the hallway and up the stairs, into my bedroom. With a soft red carpet and every inch of the wall plastered with horse posters cut out from magazines, it was a true horse lovers dream bedroom. But right know I was wondering why I had ever bothered falling in love with horses.
I sighed and went up to my dresser, which I had gotten from my older sister, Luccette, when she grew out of it. With a big mirror painted white, it seemed out of place in this horsey room.
I brushed my copper-colored hair.
I came from a family of weirdos.
For two reasons: One, they hated animals. The only animal that we have is our fish, Butternut Delight, and my kitten, Kiddo. Two, they named me the worse possible name in the world, Gertrude Jane. Thankfully, I changed it to Jamie. And, also, everyone else's names in my is pretty. Like my 18-year old sister with gorgeous dark black named Lucette, and my younger 6-year old sister Pollyanna, which was named after a movie.
I changed into a pair of grass-stained jeans and a navy blue T-shirt with a purple horse on the front. Not exactly stylish, but it was my sort of thing.
I clattered down the stairs and into the living room, where Pollyanna was making kissing noises to Butternut Delight. I ignored her. "Mom! I'm going to bike to the library!" I shouted into the kitchen. I heard a muffled reply, which was good enough for me, so I jammed my feet into my sneakers, dashed out the door and and hopped onto my bike. After peddling breathlessly for five minutes, I finally reached the River Town Library. I hopped off my bike.
I loved to go to the library, since it was the only place that I got peace and quiet. Plus, their were tons of cool books!
After parking my bike in the bike rack, I opened up the glass door leading to the library. I scanned the information board, looking for horse for sale sign. Nothing...nothing...nothing...Holy Cow! I did a double take and stared at the pink poster with a tiny horse printed on it
Chapter Two, The Stables
Come to Felling's Horse Stable!
Ride, train, board, lessons!
Opening August 15
Off of Weeler Road
I gasped. August 15 was two weeks ago! Boy, what I miss out of!
I dashed outside and leaped onto my bike. The next few minutes went past me in a blur as I peddled outside of town and town the dirt road. I gasped and slid to a stop as I came near Weeler Road. A old farm that had been destroyed by a fire was now completely transformed, with the barn painted a deep red, a black house standing off in the distance, a few riding rings, and it was surrounded by white fences and horses grazing the luscious, green grass.
I slid to a stop in front of the barn. Two riding rings were occupied by girls riding horses. A girl riding a gray dapple and her grayish black hair pulled back in a fishtail braid looked up in interest, and a girl watching the girl on the gray dapple waved, her red hair pulled back in a ponytail. The girl in the other riding ring completely ignored be, too busy warming up on her gorgeous Chesnut-horse.
"Sandra, pay attention!" I heard a voice shout and I watched a woman in tan riding breeches slide under the fence and run up and stop the horse "I don't want you to get hurt." she said softly, in a gentle but firm tone of voice. Sandra seemed ashamed and humiliated by upsetting the instructor "I'm truly sorry, Fiona! I try not to, but..." she sighed, and, with another last look at me, turned back to Fiona.
"But what?" Fiona questioned, tossing her dark brown hair that was in a ponytail to the side.
Sandra was cut off by shout from the other riding ring "Concentrate and jump, Amanda! For pete's sake, just glide over the jump." A firm petite instructor shouted at a the girl on the chesnut, Amanda, arms on her hips.
Amanda dropped the reigns "This stupid horse won't jump!" she shouted back, pointing at her horse.
The instructor seemed furious by this.
"Champion is a top-rate horse! You're doing the trouble by confusing Champion by leaning to far back!" The instructor screamed, her long brown braid trailing down her back as she walked up to the student. Champion, obviously upset by this, pranced around the riding ring. Fiona ran into their riding ring to calm everyone down. I leaned my bike over to the fence post. The girl with her red hair held back in a ponytail walked over to me "Howdy, I'm Gabi. Sorry that you had to pop up at this time, we're all upset 'cause a horse got loose and we had to chase four blocks on ATV's just to catch it!" Gabi said.
I instantly felt at ease and relaxed. Gabi searched my face, at I realized why. "Oh, my name is Jamie." I said. Gabi's smiled from ear to ear "Oh so you can talk!" as she as she said it, her face fell, but I laughed.
"So, can you show me your horses?" I asked.
Gabi giggled "My horses? Oh, you mean Fiona's and Rachel's horses." she said, nodding towards the two instructors, who were know taking down the jumps from the arena.
After grabbing hold of my hand, she led me towards the pasture. "Most of these horses are either boarded, owned here for lessons, or young horses or former jumping champions who are coming to stay here." Gabi groaned "Oh, and their's Genius, who's anything but a genius!" I giggled as a brown-and-white horses trotted over. I patted him, and he shoved his head into my chest.
"Who are you?" A voice asked behind me. I whirled around and saw the stern-looking instructor, a riding whip at her side. "I...I...wanted to see the horses." I stuttered. A more gentle voice came behind from the instructor "Why?" I looked past the other instructor-Fiona-behind her.
I shrugged "Because I like them...especially this one." I said for a reason, I don't really know why, pointing towards Clown.
"She's Rachel." Gabi whispered, pointing towards the stern instructor.
Rachel's eyes softened "Okay...but please leave our property." she said.
So I silently left.
Chapter Three- A REAL job
I really don't know how I did-how I managed to do it, anyway. I mean, talk my parents into letting my work at the stables. At first they refused, since summer vacation wasn't going to last forever, but they finally allowed me too. Two days later, after mucking out thousands of stalls, I contently patted Clown. Sure, I didn't have a horse at the moment-and I probably wouldn't until I was eighteen, but I was at least in a place where horses lived. And, maybe someday, I could talk my parents into letting me own a horse.
Though maybe I would have to sneak it into the house.
