Lost with the Horses
Chapter One: The Start of Everything
by Roncy

I sat up in bed and took one glance out the window before falling back onto my pillow.
"Where's the snow?" I grumbled.
"On its way. Just be patient."
I looked towards the doorway at my mom, who was holding a pile of clothes that consists of sequin-covered t-shirts, sparkly jeans, and tie-dye socks.
I sighed. She caught me awake - no time to fake sleeping this time.
"Can you hang these up, dear? Oh, and put on a nice outfit and we will go visit your new school," she said, leaving the room.
My cat, Millie, jumped up onto the bed and meowed impatiently for a pat on the head.
"Okay, okay," I laughed, scratching her under her chin.
I hopped out of bed, throwing my pale pink tunic and grey scooter skirt on.
I swung the door open, still pulling my sparkly grey cardigan over my shoulders, and ran down the stairs, skipping steps.

I munched slowly on a bowl of cocoa puffs, not my choice, while staring out the window, making a face at the cereal's flavor.
"Wiggins is lonely," I thought aloud.
As if denying what I just said, the doorbell rang, making me jump out of my chair at the kitchen table.
"Will you get that, sweetie?" Mom called to me.
I didn't answer. I merely got up and walked to the door. Probably just a package for Mom.
I swung the door open, and, to my surprise, a girl who looked about my age held out a small box.
"Hi! Welcome to the neighborhood! I'm Quintessa, but you can call me Tessa," she said, holding the box right in front of me. "I'm her mother," a short lady with blonde hair in a high bun said.
It's a cherry pie," Quintessa's mother said, smiling, as my mom came to the door.
"Oh, how nice! Thank you! Please, come inside!" Mom said.
Quintessa and her mom stepped right inside the doorway.
"Do you have a pony?" Quintessa turned towards me.
"Yeah," I replied shyly.
"Cool! Where is it?"
I motioned towards the back door. We went outside into the backyard and I pointed to a paddock a few hundred feet away from the house, where a flea-bitten grey horse with a flowing, wavy, silvery-white mane danced around in circles, hence his name.
"That's Moon Dancer," I said proudly.
Hey, wanna come over?" Tessa asked.
I looked at Mom convincingly.
"Well, if it's okay with you, Lydia," she said, turning to Tessa's mother, who nodded.
Quintessa grabbed my hand and dashed out the door. We ran to my garage and I tacked Moon up.
We walked down the road, me leading Moon, until we reached a big house with a stable next to it.
"We have a few horses; come on, I'll show you!"
We jogged to the stable and Quintessa yanked the door open.
"This is Queen," she said, pointing to a palomino mare. "Her full name is Queenessa of Quebec," she added, "Like my name, with all the Q's," she paused to catch her breath, "But, of course, no one wants to say, 'hey, can I ride Quennessa of Quebec', or 'here, Queenessa of Quebec'." She giggled. "Hey, where will you go to school this Fall?" she asked me.
"Wiggins Elementary," I replied.
"Hey! That's where I go!" she said.
She walked over to the corner of the stable and picked up a big, black, shining leather saddle and walked over.
Once she finished tacking up Queen, we both mounted and trotted towards a dusty trail.

The trail was full of nature. I was awed at the sights.
We talked about stuff, like what the move was like for my mom and I, our favorite horse breeds, pets, etc. until we both jumped at the sound of thunder.
"Oh, my gosh! I didn't realize the time!" Tessa said.
"Let's go back," we said at the same time.
"Okay, follow me," Tessa said, sitting up taller now.
We cantered back towards the trail, following it for a while, when we came to a fallen tree in front of the path.
"We can't go around it! There's no way!" Tessa screamed over the thunder.
Rain hit us like flying pellets as we grabbed the reins tightly.
"What do we do?" she cried in despair.
"Let's go the other way," I suggested.
"Okay," she agreed, and we followed the trail, away from the house, for what felt like hours until we stopped.
"Okay, Tessa, are we lost?" I finally asked.
She winced.
"Well..."
We both looked around.
"Hey," I hollered, "Look! I see a field!"
"That may be our back pastures," she said hopefully, "Let's go!"
But it wasn't the back pastures.
When we got there, Tessa groaned.
"This isn't it! I don't know where we are!" she gasped.
I looked at my step-tracker.
"We've gone three miles?!!!" I screamed, glancing at it.
"That's not possible, is it?" Tessa called over the storm.
"Yes. I re-set my step-tracker when we turned around at the log," I replied.
"Hey, I remember a fallen log leading into one of your pastures before we left," I added.
"Yeah, that's one of our hidden paths from the woods. Why?" she asked.
"Look!" I pointed to a log across the field.
"That has to be it!" she agreed.
We galloped across the fields until we got about twenty meters or so from the log.
"It's... huge!" I pointed out.
"It's too dangerous," Tessa agreed again.
"We have to get home, though. We could - we - could..."
"Die? Starve?" Tessa suggested.
"Yes! Exactly," I hollered back.
"Are you sure you should try this?" She said doubtfully as I backed up from the log.
I didn't answer. I just squeezed my legs and hoped for the best as Moon Dancer raced towards the log at full gallop. I hung on for dear life as we got closer and closer...
But then Moon stopped. I heard Quintessa screaming my name as I flew over the log without Moon, painfully crashing into something hard... but I wasn't conscious long enough to find out what.

Chapter 1: The Eyes of Death

The bleak, ravishingly alluring northern horizon spread itself around the spellbound 12-year old girl standing in the quiet world just as dawn was breaking free from the black night. It wrapped its glory around her in quiet enchantment and seemed to rapture her soul away from the grassy sod and up to the crumbling golden clouds surrounding the fiery ball of sun rising from the purple mountains. The grassy meadow, which was littered with dancing scarlet poppies, was the girl’s favorite place in the whole world. Here you could see in every direction. You could, of course, see the northeast where the sun rose every morn just above the heads of the rolling violet mountainside specked with little crowns of snow. You could see the west, where the green wood began, composed of tall pine and evergreen trees.
It was a lovely little wood. The girl fancied that the towering trees were gentle forest folk, not ugly tyrants as other people saw them as. Once the townsmen were going to cut down that forest, but the small little girl stood in the way of all the axes and saws and told them they would have to get by her if they dare ruin such a heavenly place. They relented and did not try to cut it down again, but still went on grumbling about how it was an eye sore. To the south was the town. It was a rather small village in the county part of France. High above the town was a mighty castle. It made a shadow fall over the village and it was so tall and mighty and old that it always made the little girl gasp when she saw it. At this moment, it was ruled by King Sean and the lovely Queen Adele. They were excellent rulers, and the village was never unhappy. To the east, where the captivated young girl was letting her sky blue eyes feast on now, was just meadow. You could stare at it forever and never see a tree or a mountain or hill. It was just endless miles of grass and poppy flowers. This was the girl’s favorite direction to look at. There was nothing special about it; it was just grass that went on until it met the sky. The red poppies, swaying and tossing their glorious little heads in the soft, whispering breeze, looked like multitudes of carmine royalties, dancing and laughing at how they were so wild and free and beautiful. Sometimes the girl wished she could just be a poppy and leave all worldly troubles and hardships behind.
At this very moment, the eastern sky that hovered above the lovely poppy field was beginning to be ruled by black, menacing clouds. They climbed and tumbled all over each other like disobedient children and with every moment that went by they looked all the more terrible. But in the lovely northeast, where the sun had finally risen completely into the heavens, all was golden and warm and clear. The girl wondered how one half of the sky could be so wicked and dark while the other half could remain so good and beautiful. Here the crumbling mountainside arose directly out of the wild plain. It was there that sometimes the girl would spot a mustang rearing upon a small precipice; his muscular forelegs tearing at the sky. The small girl loved horses, and she wished she could have one. Unfortunately, that was impossible. At that moment a wind blew up from the storm brewing in the east and blew against the still, silent creature with her hands holding little bouquets of poppies. It gushed past her face like a chilly, fresh breath hinted with the flavor of rain. A sound rumbled across the meadow and enveloped the girl in ravishing delight. She loved thunderstorms. They were so mighty and horrible and God-made. She would have stayed right there and let the rain drench her skin and the thunder rumble her soul and the lightning coarse through her like a stinging sword had her mistress not stumbled through the grassy meadow shouting her name like it was the very end of the world. The girl ignored her and let the wind blow her silvery auburn hair around her pale face.

“Bella! Bella you come here this instant! Wait ‘till your mother hears you were standin’ here in the middle of a thunderstorm! Good gracious, I will be surprised if you don’t catch the cold. Come dear, are you deaf?” the mistress yelled, standing where she was about fifteen feet away, tuckered out from the half a mile walk. Finally the girl turned and walked toward the red-faced maid. Bella thought she was ugly and didn’t like her at all. She had long, drab brown hair that had gray amongst it that made her look like an old table with white scratches on it. She was fat and had dark eyes. Bella didn’t know how old she was, but she did know that she wasn’t very nice. All she cared about was making it through the week so she could go out on Saturday night. Bella hoped that she would never turn out like old Mistress Jade.

“Bella, you are a disgrace to your mother’s name.” Jade grimaced, clearly disappointed in the young girl.

“My mother is poor. What name does she have?” Bella retorted, her sapphire-colored eyes gleaming with spirit. She hated it when Jade talked to her like that. The woman gasped at that.

“You have the tongue of the devil, Bella. How dare you say such things! And of your own mother!” The mistress shook her head.

“Well, it is the truth. Would you say we were rich? I do believe that I’ve worn this dress two weeks in a row.” Bella declared, raising her chin. She always raised her chin when she had an opinion that she was trying to get across to people. She was a girl of many words, and didn’t mind speaking them.

“That is not my place to argue. Come, girl, your mother called for you. One day you will reap the fruit you sowed. “Jade grumbled. Bella wasn’t listening, though. She was thinking of her mother. Ally, her lovely, fair young mother was ill. They could not afford a doctor and Mistress Jade couldn’t pay for one even if she wanted to. She used up all her money. Bella hated her for it. She was sure that Jade had been born without a heart. Ally was very pretty. She had light golden hair that shimmered like the morning sunrise and vibrant blue eyes. She had such a gorgeous nose and jaw that sometimes Bella was jealous of her. She was sweet and kind and giving and made their small dirt-poor abode look clean and tidy. At least, she used to. Now Mistress Jade had to do all the housework while she lay in bed, looking so small and delicate that Bella was sometimes afraid that a wisp of wind might blow her away. She prayed that her mother would live, but every day she looked weaker. Something kept stirring inside her soul and whispering to her that she should not hold on to love too hard. But when she heard that, she only wanted to hold on tighter.
Jade and Bella walked through the grassy meadow side by side, the sounds of thunder rumbling behind them and the village in front of them. But Bella was not paying attention to the scenery. She was thinking as she always did. Her mother called her sensitive and thoughtful, Jade called her a worthless daydreamer and romanticist, and Bella called herself inquisitive. There was so many things the mind can brood upon. And she could never just think on one thing. At this moment she was thinking of her father. She did not have a father. She used to, but Ally would not tell her what happened to him or who he even was. She must look like him somehow. She had her mother’s eyes and nose, but she did not have her mother’s elegant and distinguished jaw. She had more of a pointed jaw that made her look like she had an attitude. She liked her jaw very much and she liked to imagine that her father had one like her.
The town was just up ahead, shimmering in the early dawn and shivering in the brewing storm. The townsfolk, who always got up bright and early to do the farm chores, were already finished and preparing for the storm. The farmers herded their cows and sheep into the pens and barns and the housewives gathered their clothes off of the clotheslines. The merchants at the markets were packing up their vegetable and meat and fruit stands and the children rushed to pick up their scattered toys in the yards. The dogs barked in the distance, their bawls predicting the coming storm. Bella marched ahead of Mistress Jade, her eyes following the lines of houses trying to find their small, shabby cottage. At last she spotted it and bolted ahead at a run. Jade didn’t bother stopping her; her dark eyes were filled with an odd sorrow. She hadn’t meant to yell at the child. She had just been so overcome by what Ally had told her. She was fond of Ally and Bella. They were good souls who seemed like saints compared to her.
Bella stopped at the front steps of the house and tried to catch her breath. The house was about as big as a chicken coop or a small bedroom. There was no shingles on the roof; straw and reeds composed the leaky ceiling. The house itself was made of clay, mud, and bricks and there was only two windows in the entire house. There was no glass in the windows and they had to be covered up by reeds to block out the rain and the cold. There was a small fireplace on the inside, but there was no chimney. A small hole at the top of the roof let the smoke out. The front door was a piece of wood hinged by a couple nails. Sometimes the wind blew it open and they had to stack chairs in front of it to keep it shut. The grass around the house was yellow and unhealthy. Bella hated living here but she was not ungrateful. Some people had no place to live at all. The young girl smoothed out her dress, brushed the loose strands of hair hanging around her face behind her ear, and sighed. Slowly, her heart racing, she pulled the door open and stepped inside. It was dark...almost as dark as night...and it was cold. Bella shivered. Why was there no fire? She stepped around the kitchen table that was in her way and made her way to the living room/bedroom where everyone slept. A small bed composed of a couple old blankets sat by one of the windows. Bella’s mother was gone.
“I am sorry, Miss.” Jade muttered softly. Then she walked out of the house and Bella never saw her again. Bella did not want to be alone. She couldn’t bear the agony in her soul. Confused, Bella got up and ran out of the house. The storm had rolled in and the sun had disappeared behind black clouds. Thunder rumbled in the near distance and a raindrop fell on Bella’s neck. Then another landed on her brow. Finally it was a downpour of cold, mountain-sweet rain. Bella lifted her head to the sky and let out a long, mournful cry of despair as the rain drenched her small mortal being.
“What wrong did I ever do?” At that moment it stopped raining on Bella. The girl looked around herself and wiped the tears and raindrops out of her eyes. She saw that everywhere but around her it was raining. In fact, as Bella lifted her hand to wipe the rain off her brow, she was almost completely dry. Bella looked at the sky. It was black, but one section of the heavens almost seemed to be ripped open. Not a cloud stood in its way and the sun appeared to be shining right through. Bella let her eyes follow the ray of sunlight all the way to the ground until it stopped a few feet away. At once, Bella turned white. The sound of rain was the only noise to be heard as the young, still girl met eyes with a being much greater than herself. She was afraid. No, she was terrified. She should run. But yet, she was caught away by the beast’s majesty. She didn’t want to run into the rain. Her clothes and hair were completely dry now. She had no idea how they had dried that fast, but she didn’t want to get wet again. You see, only a small yard away, a great beast sat on his paws, his tail flicking now and again by his side. It was a lion. A very big lion...in fact, it was no ordinary lion. He was not yellow as most big cats are. He was white. An unblemished, pearly white. His mane was not all white. It was filled with silken strands of gold that wafted around his large, defined face. There was not a scratch or scar on his face and his paws stayed clawless. His teeth were well hidden within his mouth and he didn’t show them once. The most intriguing thing about the great, majestic beast was his eyes. They were not golden or brown. They were not any color that Bella really knew. The closest color she could compare it to was blue. They looked like the blue sky on a spring morning...they looked like the dark blue ocean with its surging waves...they looked like free, fierce blue-colored flames. They were filled with kindness...nobility...authority...beauty...glory...spirit. They were untamed and wild yet so deep and all-knowing. They were secretive and mysterious yet not at all boastful or amused. They were sorrowful and agonized and almost tortured. They pierced right through Bella’s skin and stared at her heart. His gaze was never broken and he never blinked. His entire being was motionless except for his flickering cat tail. Bella gulped. She did not know why a lion would enter the village, but he must be hungry. He didn’t look hungry...but he must be. He was such a large lion. He needed to eat now and again. Bella waited for him to make his move but he just sat there, the sun glimmering down on his silky fur. Bella forgot her fear and fell to her knees, misery overtaking her.
“If you shall eat me, eat me now!” she cried.
At that moment the lion stood. It was a quick, almost invisible motion. His eyes never leaving Bella’s face, he began to walk toward her. The one, lonely sunbeam strangely followed him, constantly gleaming down on his large body. A raindrop never dared to touch his coat, yet the rain continued to pour down elsewhere. The lion stopped inches in front of Bella and looked down at her. Bella closed her eyes as the beast’s breath blew her brown hair away from her face. She expected to smell a meaty, distasteful stench from the animal’s breath but she smelled the opposite. His breath smelled almost sweet and made a shiver go down her spine.
“Why do you want me to eat you, Young One?” a masculine voice suddenly questioned. Bella looked around herself but saw no one but the great lion staring vividly down at her. It was a quiet, gentle, soothing voice and Bella almost wished to hear it again.
“Who said that?” she responded. The lion, at that moment, sat down in front of the girl so that his face was meeting with her’s and smiled. Bella grimaced. She had never seen a cat smile. They never seemed to be happy enough for that sort of thing. But there he was...a lion...smiling. He didn’t reveal any teeth. His lips just curled upward. It was a very pleasant smile and it almost made Bella want to smile too.
“I am he that spoke.” The voice came again, and this time Bella knew who had spoken. It was the lion. She had seen his lips move and she had heard the words erupt from his throat. The lion’s voice was beautiful. It was a man-like voice yet it was filled something other than earth. It was...glorious...filled with so much meaning. If the lion’s words had been food Bella would have been still chewing on them.
“You?! Well, I do declare. I am mad! Either that I am dreaming and I shall soon awake,” Bella declared. The lion at once let out a small chuckle. His blue eyes danced as he laughed, making him look all the more fair.
“You are neither.” The lion suddenly became very serious. He was so serious that Bella frowned. His eyes were filled with an agonized sorrow as he stared into Bella’s face. “Just moments before you were mourning the loss of your beloved mother.” Bella looked down as the beast spoke the words. Tears immediately poked at her eyelids and pushed themselves down her cheeks. Bella wiped them away and kept her gaze downcast.
“How did you know?” she asked.
“I know all things,” the lion responded, as softly as ever.
“Then you would know that I loved her very much.” Bella told, anger beginning to hint her tone.
“Of course,” the beast replied.
“Then why did she leave?!” Bella cried, her gaze flashing up into the lion’s face with bitterness.
“She was ill. She was suffering terribly, Young One,” the lion answered gently. Bella gritted her teeth.
“Then why did she get sick in the first place?” the girl continued, trying to understand everything. Her mind felt like it was working in slow-motion. The great beast did not reply for a moment. But when he did, his tone was strong and noble.
“Many things happen that we don’t understand. But as life goes on, we soon realize that we were better off when it did happen. You will find this out soon, Young One,” the lion told. Bella nodded, but she did not understand. She didn’t really want to understand. How could her mother dying make her any better off?
“I must go now. But you should remember me by the name Yeshua.” The lion’s tone had once again changed to a gentle, kind tonality and he began to stand to his feet. Bella stood with him. It was at that moment that she realized that the storm had moved on and the clouds had broken.
“And my name is Bella,” the girl told. The lion smiled.
“I know.”
“Oh! I am sorry, I forgot that you knew everything.” Bella said, her cheeks blushing with embarrassment. Yeshua chuckled.
“It is quite alright. Now, dear girl, you are weary. Hear, I shall make you strong. The burden on your shoulders is too heavy for you to carry. May I take it for you?” Yeshua’s eyes were filled with compassion for the young orphaned girl and he could not seem to wipe the smile off his face. Bella wasn’t sure what he meant by that, but she nodded politely. Yeshua stepped toward her so that his large cat nose brushed Bella’s small human one and breathed. His breath was so sweet and crisp that Bella closed her eyes. It flooded over her and seemed to caress her soul. Her bones became strong and the agony and misery in the girl’s heart seemed to be replaced with strength and hope... something that would always help her through any situation she was in. Bella opened her eyes and smiled. Yesha was smiling, too, but his eyes were darker than before. They were filled with pain and hurt and anguish. But he paid no attention to it. Yeshua stepped back and stared deep into Bella’s eyes.
“Whenever you need me, I will come. Be strong, Bella. You have yet to create a legacy.” With that being said, the great, majestic, beautiful lion disappeared right before the young girl. Bella gasped when he had gone. Did that just happen? she wondered to herself. Suddenly she noticed the white paper grasped in her right hand. Bella sat down on the dirt road, ignoring the farmers and townsfolk that were just coming out of their houses, and opened the letter. She found a message inscripted there from her mother. As she read it, she could hear her mother’s soft, gentle voice reading it to her. It read:
“Lo, from even birth
I have given thee no worth
You are now to live a non-living life
But, if thee wish, with thy might
Thy should hope to change this awful plight
Through darkest day and darkest night
Until a tower is in sight
Thee must seek and kill the mighty dragon
Then, my dearest maiden,
Life and love tis thine
Then, my dearest girl, you shall see
That a young orphan can create a legacy.”
Bella felt the tears in her eyes but she did not notice them. She wasn’t sure what this riddle meant. She read it over and over and over again, but she still did not understand. Bella folded it and placed it in her bosom. She would forever treasure that message her mother gave to her. But at the moment, she did not realize the affect it would have on her life.

Abuse vs. Love
by Roncy

A horse so aggressive
and hugely massive!
It seems to have no heart at all.
By passersby he's ignored,
and horse trainers are bored;
No one likes the horse in that stall.

He with a buck and a snort
he scares children so short,
who look up at him with wondering eyes.
But he stomps his feet
as if saying, "you're dead meat!"
making them back away with surprise.

He was lead up on the platform
but no one dreamed of signing his form.
"This one needs a home; he's half price!"
cried the auctioneer with persuasion,
but no one listened; they had all seen him.
People backed away like frightened mice.

Horses don't deserve abuse!
It is just no use!
It just makes them fearful and mean.
Horses need patience and care
Abuse to them just isn't fair!
But some horses are treated like machines.

One woman quietly stood up and said:
"He needs to be fed!
"He needs a home, and loving care!
"I'll take him!
"I'll love him!
"His past treatment isn't at all fair!"

And so she took him,
she trained him,
and one day he looked like the others;
he had been revived
from his uncared-for life,
and someone now loved him like a mother.

Me and Dexter
by rrpals
On my 6th birthday, I woke up, got dressed in a hurry, and ran downstairs. My mom was making eggs, bacon, and toast for breakfast. “Your brother and sisters are helping your father feed the horses, why don’t you go out and help?” my mom said. So I went outside and my father gave me a plastic container filled with feed and on the top of the lid was the name, Dexter. I had never heard of a pony or horse in our barn named Dexter, so I looked for the name on the stall doors, when I found it, I poured the feed into Dexter’s feed bucket, when I saw a sign on the door that said: “happy birthday, Rosie!!! Hope you like what is inside.” I set down the container and grabbed the blue halter hanging on the stall door, opened the door, and walked into the stall where I saw a black Shetland pony coming up to me. He was all black except for a white sock on his left hind leg. I slipped the halter on him and led him out of his stall, I put my arms around him and gave him a big hug. My dad and mom came walking up to me, “he’s yours so you will have to take care of him, do you think you can do that?” my dad said, I nodded and gave both my mom and dad a big hug. “Can I ride him?” I ask, “Well, he will have to eat his food and you need to eat your breakfast, but you can ride him later today” my mom said.
I ate breakfast thinking of my new pony, some if my brothers and sisters gave me birthday gifts in the morning. I got a pair of roller skates, a t-shirt that said “I love ponies” and on the back it said, P.S. I have one!”, and a bag of my favorite candy after breakfast and gifts, I went upstairs, changed into my new shirt, got into my breeches and boots, then I went out to the barn where I got my helmet and walked down to Dexter’s stall. I lead Dexter out and tie him up, I got his bucket of grooming tools from the tack room, then pick up the curry comb and start grooming Dexter. Once he was fully groomed, I tacked Dexter up, put my helmet on, and led him to a mounting block, I put a foot in the stirrup and hoisted myself up and into the saddle, and we walked into the indoor arena, closed the gate, and started warming up at a walk. After walking around the arena for a couple rounds, I urge Dexter into a trot and make sure I am on the left diagonal and when we are nicely warmed up, I see a small cross-rail in the center of the arena and turn Dexter towards it at a good, steady trot, we approach the jump, when Dexter gathers up his legs and takes off from the ground, I smoothly head up into a nice half seat, I hold the half seat perfectly and when Dexter lands, I bring my seat down and continue posting around. I pat Dexter’s neck and tell him, “good boy!” Then we trot around once, turn towards the jump again, I keep Dexter steady, then soon we are flying over the red and white cross-rail and keep trotting around the arena, I slow Dexter to a walk and we walk around to take a breather.
After taking a quick trail ride around the farm, we arrive at the barn, sweaty, but happy, I unmount and lead Dexter back to the cross-ties and untack him, then I give him a nice, cool bath. After sweat scraping Dexter, I take him out to the pasture where he starts cropping grass contentedly. I cool down with lunch and cool water
In the later years that I rode Dexter, we won many ribbons in shows together, took riding lessons, went on trail rides, and had a lot of fun!!!
P.S.
This is a true story of my first pony.

Chapter 1
***

The fields of gold lead to the camp of the BlackFoot Indians. A little girl named Bella was helping her mother make Turquoise jewelery. Bella had a complete collection. After awhile she got bored. "Mom can I go and adventure into the Moors?" She asked. Her mother paused for a minute. "Young lady I never ever want you woundering into the Moors. The creatures there are very.. Umm.. Dangerous." Bella growled. "Well how do you know? You never been there!" She yelled. "And neither will you young lady. Ever! End of discusion." Then her mother turned back to the jewelery. Bella stamped her foot on the ground and then walked nearly completely off the site. She sat down on the dirt and put her hands on her face that were resting on her knees and looked down at the ground. Her black long braids drifted slowly down and rested on her shoulders. She looked at the dark Moors and began to get up and walk towards the enterance. She wasn't afraid at all. She just walked in there like it was a peice of cake. The Moors were filled with huge and small creatures. Like fairies and giant fish that were out of this world wide. Bella took a gander at the megestic beauty of the forest. She was gasping at the sites, smells, and wonders. "I want to live here." She edged forward and walked onto the crystal clear huge lake. Then she stumbled apon some fairies. "Hello there." Bella said. The fairies gasped and looked at Bella and started to fly around her, Content but weirded out. They have never seen anything like her before of that size. "Wheres your wings?" One of them asked. "Did yours shrink? Did they get chopped off? Are they invisable?" They all asked. "I dont and never had wings before." She answered. They gasped. "Well do you need or want some?" The one in the red dress asked. "That would be wonderful, Bu-- Come on girls, Lets get her some wings!" The red one said and cut off her sentance. "Follow us!" The other one in the Yellow dress said. Bella walked behind following them until they stumbled apon huge oak tree they called, "Magesty." The tree was huge with dark wood and a large amount of leaves. "Wow!" Bella gasped. "Its so.. Beautiful?" The one in a blue dress said. "Yes bu- Wonderful?" Another one said. "Big." Bella answered. "Ahh yes, it is so." The one in the red dress said. "Oh where are my manners? Im Rose, these are my sisters. The one in the blue is Onyx, and the one in Yellow is Yvette." Rose said. "Im Bella, Pleased to meet you and your tall village." She giggled. "Anyways, I will be right back to get you wings!" Rose said as she flew into the tree's enterance. A few mintues later she brang out a small bottle of green liquid. "Drink this." She said putting it in my hand. She took the lid off and smelt it. "Yuck! It smells awful!" Bella yelled. Then she tipped the bottle in and over her mouth and washed it down with her spit. "Wasn't bad. When will they come?" Bella asked. "About now, Remeber, You just wont get the wings of a Fairy, But the powers. Such as instand healing and stuff." Rose answered. "Wait what?! I cant have the powers!" Bella claimed. "You asked for to be a fairy right?!" Yvette asked. "I asked for wings! Not powers!" Bella yelled. "Oh yeah.. Right. He-he. But dont worry, it wont be that bad. At least you will have huge black wings and you will still be your same size." Onyx and Yvette said. "Oh.. Well still.." Bella paused to fell the wings start to grow on her back. The black feathered wings were so big that they reached the ground. Bella's brain formed a spot to control and get nerves in the wings so she auttomatically knows how to control them. "Wow! Thanks alot!" Bella exclaimed. "Your welcome." They all said. "I must be going, I have more to explore." Bella said. "Bye!" She said to them. She lifted off with her wings in the forest as something caught her eye. A pegusus was grazing in the thickets, But when she lifted her head, It had a horn on it. Bella forgot what they called them, But she approached the horse. It didn't seem afriad. Like, If she had wings and I do, Its not dangerous. "Hello there." Bella said as she reached out to touch the forehead of the horse. The pegusus was big and dark colored. Not really a true color of one. They are usually white. But Bella didn't care, The horse was beautiful the way it was. Bella began to examine the horse. Checking out it's horn, it's wings. It was a female pegusus. Bella flapped her wings and throughout the days with the pegusus they bonded. When we finally trusted eachother, Bella got to ride the pegusus. She and her flew into great hights. "Your so beautiful and magestic. Thats what I am going to call you. Magestic." So Bella and Magestic became best friends. Bella even began to forget all about the Blackfoots. Her mother might be worried sick. But she cant go back, They will just be so mad and disappointed. That and she cant be around other humans and neither can the pegusus. Magestic began to get even closer and closer to the entrence of the Moors. Bella would always lead her back deep into the forest everyday. But some how Magestic would find the way back. So finally, Bella gave in and they flew together out into the wide open feilds of gold. Every now and then Bella would wonder if Magestic had powers in her horn. She could ask, Shes a nature fairy. Most of the times she would be called "Mother Nature". But Bella always ignored it, Even though it was an inch away of being true. They then flew and ran into a stone castle. It was built on the side of the tallest mountain in the land. Bella flew close to the window and peaked inside. There were people. She and Magestic knew this was not such a safe place and drifted back to the Moors. When a month passed, Bella began her nature wordrob. She made a crown of gold and flowers with a Turquoise jewel in the top center. Then she made a dress of white with a brown sourry and no shoes or protection of her feet. She couldnt feel anything on the bottoms of her feet. It all began when she got her wings. When the sun set, She found a tree that was very comfortable to sleep in. "Goodnight Magestic." She said as the sun set. When it began to rise, She looked around for Magestic but couldn't find her. Then she wondered.. Maybe she went to check out the stone castle again. In a flash, Bella flew off to the castle. Then she saw the guards wrapping the last part of her wings and horn so she couldn't get away. Bella got angry and flew towards them at insane speeds. She then knocked them down with her wings and freed Magestic's wings. "Go Magestic!" She claimed. Then a guard lassoed Bellas hand and started pulling her towards him. Bella tried to fly away but it was useless. Out of energy and being gripped by, Bella began to stop the struggle. Bella was drug up to the highest tower and chained up. It was until the next morning her window crashed open. Magestic used her horn and got in. She quickly struck the chains and melted them with her horn. "So it was true, You had powers!" Bella shouted. The guards came up and yelled, "Their getting away!" Magestic flew out the window and fast towards the Moors. Bella tried to flew but quickly fell because her wings were wrapped. They dropped their weapons and open their jaws wide. "It cant be.. Your mother Nature!" They exclaimed. "Yes! Its true! Now unhand me you imbisoles!" Bella shouted. Bella grunted and ripped open the leather guarders on her wings and stood up and flew around the room trying to get to an exit. "Guards get her!" The King ordered. "Get her now! Before she gets away!" The king shouted. Bella managed to dodge the arrows and chains. Bella crashed the window open and flew high in the air. Bella smiled and looked at Magestic, Who was so brave to save her. As the sun set, They flew back to the Moors..

BFF's, Between the Worlds
Chapter One: Traversing the Vortex
by Roncy

I couldn't believe it. My best friend, Rae, and I were on a plane - by ourselves - to California! I looked out the window, still not believing my luck. Three weeks with horses! What could be better? With that, I dozed off, and awoke while the plane was landing. My legs were stiff as Rae and I exited the plane and entered the bustling airport, but Rae's aunt soon located us.
"Oh, Rae, how you've grown! It is so nice to see you! And you brought a friend! Aren't you Roncy? I saw you when I visited Rae's family last summer," she said.
I nodded and Rae's aunt hugged both of us.
"Just a reminder, you can call me Miss Fiona or Aunt Fiona, whichever you prefer," she added, taking us to her car.
We got into the gray van and drove to her house. When we stopped in her aunt's massive front yard, Rae and I leaped out and breathed in the fresh air.
"Welcome to my humble abode!" Aunt Fiona said and led us into her white house. She showed us our room on the second floor. We threw our bags on the two beds and raced downstairs. "Herein lies Flowing Mane Riding School," Aunt Fiona announced proudly as she led us back outside. We gaped at the beautiful stable and multiple paddocks, but what amazed us most was the horses.
"Now, all of these horses are used for lessons," Aunt Fiona said, "but I will let you both choose one horse for you to ride in the three weeks that you are here, and I will not use it for lessons during your stay." She smiled warmly and opened the stable's door.
I walked down the isle multiple times until I noticed a gorgeous black and white paint horse.
"His name is Rain," Aunt Fiona said, coming up behind me.
"He's pretty," I said dreamily.
"Yes, he is," Aunt Fiona agreed. "Do you like him?"
I nodded, grinning.
"He knows both styles of riding. Which do you prefer?" she asked.
"English," I said, and Aunt Fiona walked to the tack room at the end of the isle. She came back showing me a black leather saddle and matching bridle. The bridle had silver stones on the edges that shone like the sun as Aunt Fiona tacked him.
"I assume you know how to ride a horse," she said, and I nodded, "so I'll let you get to know him."
"Thank you, Aunt Fiona," I said, and she smiled and went to help Rae.
I patted Rain's neck and he nickered at me. I let him sniff me before I mounted, and I joined Rae outside the stable. She had chosen Seaside Sands, a sandy colored palomino mare, hence her name.
Aunt Fiona handed us riding helmets and motioned toward the riding ring.
"Why don't you girls ride over there? I have some lessons I need to prepare for," she said, walking away.
Time flew by as Rae and I talked our lives away while trotting or cantering on our horses.
Before we knew it, the sun was setting, and Aunt Fiona called us inside for dinner.
"You can untack the horses in their stalls. Their tack goes under their name in the tack room," she instructed us.
We did as we were told and joined her at the dinner table inside the house.
After dinner, we were excused to go see the horses for a bit.
Rae and I were sitting by the extra feeding troughs in the stable when the lights in the stable went out.
We screamed, and I fumbled for the switch on the wall. I found it and switched it on, but, to my surprise, we weren't in the stable anymore.
I blinked, not believing my eyes. I looked around for Rae, and saw her sitting on a rock, gazing around unbelievably.
"We - we - we were in the stable just a second ago... Where...? How?" I searched for the words as Rain walked up to me.
Rae and I exchanged glances.
"Rain?" I said, dumbfounded.
Rain nodded, making my eyes turn huge.
"We need your help," he said.
Rae turned pale, and I felt sick, but interested.
"What for?" I asked, feeling weird talking to a horse.
Rain turned his head toward a grove of trees and Seaside Sands trotted out.
Rae turned even more pale as Sands spoke.
"We are not ordinary horses," she said in a silvery voice.
"I noticed," I said.
She nodded her majestic head, then continued, "We live here, in the Land of Horses, 'the land of the free, and home of the neigh'. It is kind of a mythical world, but it exists. We horses live here, but travel between your and our worlds. We live in your world by day, and return to our own by night."
I looked at her strangely.
"Why do you come to our world? Are all horses from here? And why do you need our help?" I asked.
"We help the humans, give them companions, and explore there. And no, not all horses are from this world. We started herds in the other world so far back in history. There were already a few here, and our ancestors mated and the herds spread throughout your world. As for your help," Rain looked at Sands before continuing, "the vortex between the worlds is closing because a horrible storm lost us our power. Now, we must find it."
"Or?"
"Or we horses will be stuck in one world forever. We have only a few days."
"And what do we need to find? We'll help," Rae spoke up.
"Different things," Sands said, looking at Rain uneasily.
"Wait, is there a time difference between the worlds, like in Narnia?" I asked.
Rain looked at Sands, who said, "No, that is why we travel at night. But, please, we need your help! Humans have power that horses don't. And what is Narnia?"
"A story in our world, never mind," I said quickly. "But are you saying that however long we're gone, we will also have been gone in our world?"
"Well...." Rain began slowly, "yes, but there is something else."
"What?" Rae and I both asked nervously.
Rain seemed to have shrunk a little as he spoke.
"Well, you can't go home until the items have been found."
"Okay?" I said, confused.
Sands quickly offered up an explanation, "If the items aren't found before the time is up in a few days..." she paused nervously, "you'll... be stuck here... forever."
Rae looked so pale that I thought she was going to pass out. My eyes almost popped out of my head.
This adventure had just taken a very unexpected and frightening turn.
