Silver Spring Summer Part 1
By Otaku_lady

“I sentence you, Clare Payton Brown, to three months of community service at Silver Spring Equine Rehabilitation Center. This will be served over the upcoming summer vacation. Case closed,” the judge said, banging her gavel. “Dang it!” I mumbled under my breath as everyone began to file out of the courtroom. “I’m sorry, Clare. I did everything I could do to prove you innocent,” my lawyer, a tall, wiry young man named James, said. “It’s okay James. Hey, at least it’s better than juvie!” I reassured him, trying to stay positive. Inside, however, I was feeling absolutely sick. What did I know about horses? I had only ridden them for a few weeks when I was 5! Ugh, my mom just had to bring up my “passion for horses” to the judge. After that, it was unanimously decided that I would spend my summer at Silver Spring, taking care of sick, hurt, abused horses. Oh, goody. I spotted my mom, a tall, thin woman with long brown hair, dressed in a mink coat and bright red stilettos. “Sorry, dear. But at least you’re not going to juvie! And once you finish this community service, this whole incident will be wiped off of your record!” she commented, grabbing my hand. I nodded and followed her outside. “But why did you have to mention the fact that I used to ride? I don’t know a thing about horses, how do you expect me to take care of them for three months!” I said, my voice rising slightly. “Calm down, Clare. I mentioned it to the judge because I thought that doing something horse related would be good for you. You’re always talking about how you wish that you never stopped riding, so I figured that this would be a good opportunity for you. Anyways, it’s done now. The decision is made. Your first day at Silver Spring is tomorrow,” she replied. She did have a point. No use crying over spilled milk, as they say. Still grouchy, I pulled out my phone and began listening to music.

“Clare, get up! It’s your first day at Silver Spring, don’t be late!” my mom yelled, barging into my room. “Ughhh… Five more minutes…” I groaned, rolling over. “Nope, it’s 6:45. We gotta get there by 7:30,” she said, opening my blinds. Rays of summer sunlight streamed in, shaking me out of my half-awake, half-asleep state. “6:45! It’s summer!” I exclaimed. “Well, the day starts early on the farm. Come on, up, up, up!” my mom yelled. Grudgingly, I got up and dragged myself to the bathroom. I brushed my shoulder length brown hair, washed my face, and brushed my teeth. I debated on whether to put on makeup or not, but I decided not to. It would melt off in minutes, with this summer heat. I went back to my room and got dressed in high waisted jeans, a yellow graphic tee, and my yellow converses. This probably wasn’t appropriate attire for horse care, but I didn’t have anything better to wear, so I decided to just go with it. I plodded downstairs and slowly ate breakfast, a granola bar, a peach, and green tea. I was filling up my water bottle just as my mom came downstairs, looking perfectly put together, as always. She informed me that it was time to go. “Let’s go. The farm is a half hour out of the city, so we should leave now” I nodded and finished filling up my water bottle. We got into the car and got out on the road. 20 minutes into our travels, we got stopped by a traffic jam. New Jersey traffic, am I right? Soon, however, the hustle and bustle of the city gave way to the quiet serenity and soft rolling hills of the countryside. We pulled up to a large estate with lush green paddocks and horses of every size, shape, and color grazing away. The car cautiously inched up a steep hill, and when it reached the top, I could see Silver Spring in all of its glory. There was a large brown barn, bustling with activity and the neighs and squeals of horses. There were paddocks all around, each filled with multiple equines. To the north, there was a thick, dense forest. I’ll admit, I was kind of awestruck at the whole setup. I was startled out of my observation by a tall, muscular blonde woman holding the lead of a fidgety white horse. “Can I help you ladies?” she asked with a smile. “Hi, I’m Emma Brown, and this is my daughter Clare. She’s the new volunteer here,” my mother answered for me. “Nice to meet you, Clare. I’m Sigrid, and this here is Ghost,” the woman said, pointing to the antsy horse. “Nice to meet you, too,” I replied with a shy smile. “I’m the owner of Silver Spring, and I’m going to pair you up with someone for the day. They’ll show you the basics of horse care, and introduce you to your assigned horse,” Sigrid explained. “Well, Clare, it looks like you’re in good hands. I’ll be back to pick you up at 6,” mom said, going back to her car. “C’mon, follow me,” Sigrid commanded. I followed, not really sure what to expect.

Guts: On a Spooky Trail Ride
By: hosessaddles
A trail ride,
A cool breeze,
Leaves blowing in mysterious ways.

Hooves stomping,
Midnight,
Ghostly figures.

It is Halloween,
Dark and scary.
You and your horse are ready for anything that comes your way,

You have been separated from a group,
So it is all on you,
To survive this spooky night, all you need is,

Trusting your horse,
Bravery and working together,
Guts.

Title: A Horse
By: Horsesforever12
Enjoy~~~~!!!

The meadows, O those green, dancing moors
They are gates, they are great, magnificent doors
The mountains, O those proud, colossal towers
They are castles, let them all before me cower

The wind, O that whispering, waving breeze
I race against it and beat it with ease
The sun, O that glorious, warm ball of gas
It is nothing; all that see me melt like ash.

The trees, O those colorful, blooming leaves
If you saw my coat, your heart I would seize
The river, O that gushing, gurgling water
I look at it and I burst into laughter!

The earth, O that grassy, dirt-ridden sod
Feel it rumble; upon it my hooves shall trod
The sky, O that blue, yawning ocean
It crumbles beneath my surging, tireless motion

What am I, this earth-shaker, this flower?
What am I, this portrait of beauty and power?
What am I, this fast-moving, king of force?
I am a glory, a creation, a passion, a horse.

I own the meadows and mountains and winds
Upon the sun and the trees I grin
The water and earth are but my road
Across the sky, hundreds of times, I have flown

I am wild, I am untamed, I am the essence of free
I am proud, I am wondrous, can you not see?
I am created by a Creator who I forever endorse
I am a flame, a eagle, a legacy, a horse.

The Horses and Wolves of Thunder Story #1
By WinterWolf

Thunder lifted his hoof. His nostrils flared, as he smelled something disturbing in the air. Wolves... He had to alert the rest of the herd before the wolves attacked. The whole herd of young horses lifted their hooves and ran as fast as they could into the deep meadow, twisting in different directions to lead the wolves off course.

Meanwhile, the leader wolf was leading his pack and searching for the horses with his strong nose. He howled when he scented them, pointing his nose in the right direction. "Follow me and run as fast as you can," He seemed to say to them. The wolves all forced themselves to run beyond the limit, and soon they were coming closer and closer to the meadow.

When the wolves finally slowed and began to creep silently in the tall reeds, the alpha sniffed the air and ground, his tail wagging in all directions to communicate with his pack. Finally he found the trail and began to creep faster. One of the wolves stepped on a twig, which snapped. This arose the horses, which ran toward the forest.

The alpha wasn't pleased with the wolf and sent her to the den. He urged the rest to follow him quietly into the woods. They cautiously moved into the deep woods and waited for a few moments, then sniffed the air and ground again. Not smelling a trace, they turned to their alpha with confused looks. But he couldn't give them a command, for he was just as confused, not including his embarrassment for not being able to. He shook himself and began sniffing, leading them farther and farther away from the herd without knowing it.

The horses had finally tired and were resting far away from the deep forest and wide meadow. The mares and foals were drinking at a nearby stream while the stallions fought for ranks. They were all exhausted by the end of the day, but were sincerely glad that the wolves hadn't found them yet, and they hoped that that would never happen.

As the night hours passed, the wolves settled in a old hole down a hill. They were more than exhausted, their ribs were heaving with the hard breaths of every wolf. They had finally given up, and after a few long hours of nighttime rest, the defeated wolves returned to the den with their tails tucked beneath their furry bodies. The horses would surely get more of it next year, and the alpha planned this secretively behind his pack's back.

The Lipizzaner
By SaigeGirl

They seem to dance,
Whilst they prance.
They soar through the sky,
Seeming to fly.
How? I ask, is such beauty portrayed?
Because of God's hand that he laid
Upon the horse's wonderful back.
He left them, not to race on a track
No, but only to dance for Him,
To show that God is no whim.
He made us all; every one,
To dance with the Lipizzaner's in the sun.

I hope you like it! Thanks!

I opened the barn doors and was greeted by an deafening whinny. I know that call, I got to hear it everyday. My horse Sprite leaned over the stall door with her ears perked. She looked at me and seemed to say " Hey feed me, then lets go for a gallop!" I fed all the horses in the barn and went back in to eat breakfast. When I finished I returned to the barn and gathered all my tack by Sprite's stall. I got a halter on her and put her in cross ties and began to groom her with a curry comb. When I finished I saddled her up and walked her to my homemade cross country course. I warmed her up with a few low fences and then we began. The first few jumps were solid brush jumps and the rest were brick walls and fence jumps. It was nippy out that morning and I shivered as the low fog dampened my cloths. Sprite was usually not very good at cross country, but that day she flew over the jumps like she had wings. I have never been so proud of her. She made me smile. The past six months of training had paid off. When i took her to a cross country competition we took a third and then a reserve champion for the whole show. I am so glad I took the time to work with such a wonderful horse. She has changed my life. I could not imagine a day without her.

Title: Listen to Love
By: Horsesforever12

O child, my darling, turn your ear
Listen to love and strike down fear
All that is wrong will soon be right
If you love, only to love, and never lose sight
White, bliss, of cold and of light
A creature, a horse, an object of plight
It is strong, it is glory, it knows no sin
He knows it not, yet it knows him
Dark, shadow, a silhouette of ash
A horse twisted, coy, and rash
And see! It has fallen, this beauty!
Let it arise with pride and joy and newity
It is the sun, let it vanquish the night
Let it be, so all can be right
See, there is life! A descendant of shadows
That shall fill its quiver with dark arrows
But also there is she, a gift to a Flower,
The twilight, a daughter of beauty and power
A hunter's moon, illuminating the black
Let hope, trust, and love never lack
O child, my darling, turn your ear
Listen to love and strike down fear
All that is wrong will soon be right
If you love, only to love, and never lose sight
