Callie’s #2 Adventure: First Lesson
by jjpals

Callie woke up bright and early Monday morning at 7:00am. As she dressed for school and packed her school bag, Callie thought of her first lesson, which was taking place later that day, but as her Mom’s voice travelled up the stairs, calling her children to breakfast, Callie grabbed her school bag and shoes, then tumbled down the stairs with Mikey and Chloe following at full speed. Callie dropped her school stuff at the door, leaving out an essay that needed corrections, then she fed her pets, and sat down for her warm breakfast. Breakfast was cereal, eggs, toast, and a half of a grapefruit. Callie’s Dad had left earlier for work, so he had already eaten and cleaned up his dishes. As the three kids hurriedly got their shoes on, their teeth brushed, homework completed, and their lunches packed. Mom loaded the dish washer and cleaned up the kitchen, then she went outside with Callie, Mikey and Chloe, to wait for school buses. Callie and Mikey got into their buses, then Mom and Chloe drove to Chloe’s school. Mom went on, to an office in the center of the city, to work on a case, as she was a lawyer.
Callie had gone through her classes, eaten lunch, had recess time, gone through even more classes, and now she found herself next to her best friend, Lily, chatting about their summer. Lily and her family would be leaving for a vacation in California for the summer, then she and her older sister would be going to a summer camp afterwards. Callie told Lily about her riding lessons that she would be taking for the month, she also informed Lily that she would definitely be going to the same camp along with Chloe, Mikey would be going to a “Sports All Summer” camp event. Callie’s family still had not planned where vacation would be. Lily’s Mom came and picked up both girls, and soon Callie was dropped off at her own house, and as she waved goodbye to her dear friend, she thought of the summer ahead where they would be having fun at the camp and just being together. Chloe came out to entice Callie to come in for a snack, and both girls proceeded to the kitchen where Mom had prepared sliced apples, chocolate cake, and milk. Callie took her snack to the basement where she set up her schoolwork and wrote out some essay ideas, she still had one more essay to complete before school was over in two days. Mom took Chloe to her friend’s house for the afternoon and came back to take Callie to her Lesson!!!!! Meanwhile Callie had changed into a purple t-shirt, her tan breeches, tall, rubber, black boots, and her black and purple gloves. Callie had her Mom braid her hair, then they both got into the black BMW and drove to the farm. Hellen met Callie at the Lesson Barn, where all the students got their horses ready for lessons, there was also one other girl named Hannah, who helped with the students. Hellen showed Callie where her horse was. Callie would be riding a mare by the name of Joy, she was brown in color with a white stripe down her face and pretty, brown eyes. Callie already knew how to groom, so Hellen stood back and watched as Callie brushed Joy and picked out Joy’s hooves. Callie had watched her Aunt tack up one of her horses on the farm, but she had never done it herself. Hellen took Callie to the tack room and the two of them gathered the saddle, saddle pad, riser pad, girth, bridle, martingale, and front boots. Callie had never seen so much tack before! Her Aunt only used a simple saddle and a bridle, no boots or pads at all. Hellen and Callie worked at putting the pads on, securing the saddle with the girth, putting the martingale over Joy’s head and around her neck, then attaching the Martingale to the bridle which they put on and buckled the straps in place. Callie brushed down Joy’s legs and hooves, then Hellen showed Callie how to strap the front boots on. Callie slipped her black helmet over her head and secured the strap. Hellen and Callie took Joy to the arena and there Callie met Sal. Hellen tightened the girth, sized the stirrups, and helped Callie up onto Joy. As Callie slid her feet into the stirrups and gathered the reins, Sal walked over and introduced herself.
Sal was a tall and slim 18 year old, with a bright face, light blue eyes, blonde hair, and a quirky smile. Sal almost seemed to radiate confidence and determination, but also being kind and understanding at the same time. Sal was like the rough and tough girl who grew up on a wild farm, went on vacations through the rapids on kayaks, or bungee jumping, even climbing steep rock walls with no harness or ropes to help her. Sal looked like a person who didn’t care about dangers, she was like a dare devil, ready to take on anything exciting and dangerous. Sal reviewed Callie about her riding skills then she had Callie walk Joy around the arena, to warm up. As Callie steered Joy out to the rail of the arena and spurred her into a brisk walk, she took in the overhead fans turning consistently to blow away the hot and sticky air, she noticed the several cones placed in a row on one side of the arena, as well as the ground poles lined up in the middle of the arena. Callie’s Mom was sitting on the bleachers in the corner of the arena, grinning widely and taking in everything around her. Callie smiled, then focused on her riding as she realized Sal was watching her. She pushed her heels lower, brought her hands down, gave Joy a bit more rein, and straightened her back. Callie was rewarded a “Good!” from Sal, then she turned the corner and kept walking forward in her new, more refined seat. 5 minutes later Callie had walked over the poles and woven through the cones, then Sal asked Callie to trot Joy. Callie shortened her reins, dug her heels into Joy’s sides, and started posting trot as Joy bumped along happily. Callie’s legs were soon sore as she continued fighting against Joy’s bumpy trot, trying to post well enough so that she didn’t need to be jolted around. Sal had Callie trot over the poles, then Callie practiced walking and trotting Joy around in 20 meter circles. The lesson was soon over and Sal told Callie that she liked the heels down and the straight back, but Callie’s hands and legs needed work, so Sal told Callie to exercise a bit so that her muscles won’t tighten whenever she is trotting. Callie thanked Sal, then she met up with Hellen in the middle of the arena as Sal went into the next lesson. Callie slid off Joy and almost collapsed as her legs gave way. She could barely stand as her muscles strained to cope with standing, after coping with riding for half an hour!
Hellen took Joy’s reins and took her back to the arena as Callie dragged herself alongside Joy. Callie pulled off her helmet to relieve her head with some airflow, then she and Hellen untacked Joy, put away the tack, brushed Joy down, put her away, then cleaned Joy’s bridle. Callie’s Mom came into the lesson barn and dropped off the check for the evaluation lesson and also for the next month of regular lessons. Callie finished up with Hellen, thanked her, and went to the car with her Mom. Callie’s Mom congratulated Callie on her riding, gave her a few riding tips, then started planning ahead for Callie’s next lessons and figuring out where the family could go for vacation.
Callie zoned out from her Mom talking to herself and laid back upon the car seat, thinking of how her lesson went, dreaming of a future with horses, and wondering when she should tell Lily about her lesson. Dad had picked up Mikey from school and Chloe from her friend’s, they picked up dinner of pasta and salad at the store and had come home to prepare it all. Callie and her Mom pulled into the driveway, got out, closed the garage, then came into the kitchen and sat down for dinner. Dad scooped out his generous proportions of ice cream, then the family fixed their own ice cream sundaes. Callie and her siblings headed downstairs after dinner was cleaned up, they took turns playing xbox. Dad had work to complete, so he shut himself up in his office in the basement and worked through his files and papers from the office. Mom vacuumed the living room and the dining room, then came downstairs and sat on the couch, reading a book she had picked up from the library for a book club she had enrolled herself in for the summer.
For now we will close the curtains of this family and wait patiently for Callie’s next adventure.

End of Winter
By: PonyPalClub

Winter is ending,
The snow and cold is nearly spent,
Spring is coming,
The warmth is soon going to make us content!,
Flowers will grow,
Seeds will as a plant rise,
It seems as if they know,
And small trees will grow in size,
And new animals will be born,
Your horse will run like the wind,
Makes me wish to have more,
Sunshine,
Breeze,
And newborn things,
Saddle your horse,
Get ready to ride,
New Spring adventures abide,
Inside the forests the sun will glow,
Now the coldness is low,
Enjoy you're ride with your horse,
And enjoy Spring, of course!

At the End of a Long Day's Work
By GS12174

A grove of greenery
Whispering in the wind

A herd of horses
Grazing with content

A sparkling stream
Bubbling ’round each bend

A spent, sweaty sorrel
Shuffling to the shade
“Good to be back.”

A bold, brilliant bright bay
Coming to his aid
“Hello, old friend.”

A day’s tiring task
Taking its toll

A spent, sweaty sorrel
Sighing from his soul

A bold, brilliant bright bay
Nuzzling his poll

A pair of best friends
Grazing side-by-side
“Welcome home.”

As free as the wind,
Yet trapped in all of its fear,
Of capture to come.

Eyes like sapphires,
Mane is as soft as the silk,
Tail like a banner.

Nostrils are flaring,
Coat is glistening with sweat,
Hooves are packed with dirt.

As free as the wind,
Yet trapped in all of its fear,
Of capture to come.

The Eyes of the horses are the mirrors to the Soul♡
Horses are Angels without Wings♡
Horses give us the Wings we don't have ♡
Horses are beautiful Creatures enchant you♡

While I like these quotes, I'm afraid that story and poem contest entries have to be original. That means you have to have written them yourself.****

I Found Her
By Indy34

I found her on cold a winters day,
Standing there, she was begging to stay
On this cold winters night.
Her mane and tail a-flying,
Her eyes painted with fright,
I couldn't leave this horse to die,
Or i'd be left there crying.
I brought her in my barn,
Gave her a stall and a home.
And here she lives unharmed,
No longer left all alone.
No one ever came back for her,
So she is my horse now,
And that's the way I prefer
