Worst Enemy

An essay by HunterJumper11

My beloved 22-year-old horse, Harris, is a stopper. He stops in front of jumps if you jump ahead, don't keep your leg on, or have low confidence.

I used to do the first two which led to the third. It was really frustrating. I have been riding for four years. I feel like I should be much better than I am.

I am a perfectionist. I am my own worst enemy.

I have been realizing that if the word 'jump' sends worry into my heart and my brain, it's time to switch horses. I didn't want to. I finally started making headway on the ground with Harris and I felt like I couldn't abandon him.

Recently, I was at the barn to have a lesson on a friend's horse, a sweet gelding named Bodi. Bodi loves to jump. I knew he wouldn't stop on me.

However, there was a complication and I found myself on a bay Thoroughbred registered as Gentleman's Luck, or Sullivan. Sully is 16.1 hands, a full hand taller than Harris. I felt nervous getting on him. My instructor's friend, Brenda, kept reassuring me: 'You look great. You can do this.' I think if she hadn't been there I would have had a panic attack.

I cantered Sully and relaxed. His stride was long and fast, but I felt secure. Every transition was perfect. I even managed to canter a little without stirrups. Then Brenda suggested jumping and I gulped a little.

Crystal, the assistant trainer, had a great plan. She had me canter a pole, then a half X, then a crossrail. Sully did not fail me. He didn't stop. He took me over that jump and flew me over the wall that was preventing me from really riding with joy.

Who knows how long I will ride Sully. I don't have the bond with him that I was nurturing with Harris, but I can start one.

Thank you, Sully. You have defeated my worst enemy.
