A Stallion's Stall
By SonyaSparkle

A Stallion's stall
is really all
the stallion needs
when he leads.
And he will lead a herd
though the lead mare is absurd
for she ate something rotten
or maybe a piece of cotton.
The stallion's name is Magic
and it would be quite tragic
if he ran away
either tomorrow or today.
But the herd knows this won't happen
since Magic is always nappin'!

Touch the Sky!
By SonyaSparkle

The horse jumped so high
that it could probably touch the sky.
So the horse won the race
and I started to pet her face.
This winning horse's name was Dash
and she could gallop in a flash.
Because Dash was trained so well
her riding was really swell.
And so she could touch the sky.
Yes, she can, this isn't a lie.
Oh, my great horse Dash
really enjoys her bran mash.
The following day, she entered a championship.
This was going to be hard, so I bit my lip.
But I had friends to cheer me in these finals
and one of those friends was Lionel.
I knew Dash could do this
since there was no jump that she could miss.
So again, she will touch the sky
flying even higher than high!
"She won! She won!" they would say,
but I think Dash needs to rest today!

Minnie
By SonyaSparkle

Once there was a pony named Minnie
who would happily whinny
when her owner came over
along with their dog named Rover.
Then Minnie would eat hay
with her pony friend Kay.
And one day in May
a person named Jay
tried to ride
but Minnie would decide
that she didn't want to,
so Minnie let out a giant "MOO!"

Remembering Secretariat
By: kandydove

Always started last,
Until the day he was a flash.
The Belmont Stakes, The triple crown.
He went straight for the lead.
"What's he doing!?" Penny (the owner) says
He battles Sham, a huge enemy
of the big and brave Secretariat.
Shoots to the lead with no sweat.
Flaring nostrils, flowing mane, and the most
wonderful margin of victory.
Never beat, never approached.
"Secretariat wins by 31 lengths!!" the announcer cries.
The crowd doesn't care about Sham they care
who really won this wonderful race!
31 lengths and a triple crown winner!
Secretariat......Never afraid.

At the End of a Long Day's Work
By fogfog

A grove of greenery
Whispering in the wind

A herd of horses
Grazing with content

A sparkling stream
Bubbling ’round each bend

A spent, sweaty sorrel
Shuffling to the shade
“Good to be back.”

A bold, brilliant bright bay
Coming to his aid
“Hello, old friend.”

A day’s tiring task
Taking its toll

A spent, sweaty sorrel
Sighing from his soul

A bold, brilliant bright bay
Nuzzling his poll

A pair of best friends
Grazing side-by-side
“Welcome home.”

Only a Horse
By Melzzz

My mother was sold when I was very young, my father penned up day after day. He tells me it’s a lonely life, stuck alone all the time. I am to be sold soon. My siblings are all gone. Many of the people who have come to consider buying shake their head at me. “That thing is much too young,” they’d say, pointing at me. But the masters want me sold as soon as they can, bring in some money to send their son to boarding school. I’d be glad to go. Life at the farm is never very pleasant. The hay is often old, and the stalls are never very clean. Sometimes I fear for my future. What will become of me? But after all, humans have enslaved us animals. There is nothing I can do. I, after all, am only a horse.

Fantasy
By: kandydove

What am I seeing?
Is it a living being?

It has a horn
like a unicorn!

Wings like
fantasy kings.

I blinked maybe twice,
I took my choice.

It's fantasy but,
I see it with my own eyes.

I saw an unicorn flying with wings
just like fantasy kings!

Nobody believed me until the next day,
when it was the start of May.

The fantast creature, all white an shiny
landed behind our class window all very kindly.

We named him Fantasy who visited every morning,
we all said hello to Fantasy.

*PLEASE NOTE* Kayla Thompson is not a real person. As far as I know there has never been someone by that name in the Olympics.

As I walk towards the barn, I noticed that Ginger was out of her stall. I walk towards her and take hold of her halter. Suddenly, she rears! All I see is pawing hooves and the sky seems to be turning bright chestnut, I taste something warm in my mouth and realize it's my blood, I think that I must have spooked Ginger, and then everything goes black. At least that's all I remember.
Hi, my name is Katie and I used to be a really good jumper. But now, since I had my accident, I can't move my right leg. Now all I do is basically just sit inside. I have to use a crutch now, so I can't really be that useful on the ranch. It breaks my heart that I can't be with the horses, but honestly, and this is one of my secrets, I’m scared of them now. I don't know, it might be weird, especially because I used to be a horse FANATIC, but they just terrify me now. I guess it's good that I don't have much to do with them now. I can't believe that now my right leg is paralyzed. I literally can't move it. I go to a physical therapist, but form what I can tell, it isn't working that well.
Well, here comes mom. "Honey, here's your crutch, now go outside and get some exercise, ok?" she says which is really just mom code for 'Go outside and limp around the house a couple times' "Ok fine mom" I say and pick up my crutch. As I struggle to open the door, I notice Cody, Henry, and my dad in the corral with Ginger. By the way, Cody and Henry are my older brothers, they both ride, but western. They seem to be having a hard with Ginger. I approach the corral. And then suddenly, she calms down. I look around, thinking that maybe one of the hired hands is behind me with an apple or something. But no, no one is. “Hey” says Cody (the older one; he’s 15 and Henry is 13) “I think it’s you Katie, I think she recognizes you” as I process this, Ginger snorts really loudly. That sound brings memories rushing back. I remember Ginger snorting as I grabbed her halter, on that one fateful day that changed my life forever. Suddenly, I’m falling backwards, that rush of memories sending me reeling. I feel Cody grabbing me, and the real world comes rushing back. "Katie! Are you ok?!" I hear several different voices asking me this. Then I realize I'm sitting on the ground, with my back against the house. "Yeah" I manage, "I'm ok, just, scared" then, to my horror, I start crying. Then I feel my dad scooping me up and carrying me into the house.
I wake up a few hours later in my bed, I sit up and look around. I love my room, I have a sweet loft bed, with my desk underneath, and I have some really nice chair thingies (I think they are called 'poufs'), but my favorite part is that all of the walls are covered in horse posters. I also have a shelf with all of my trophies and ribbons on it. I won all of those before my accident. My trainer used to say that if I kept it up, I might be able to attend the clinic by former Olympic jumper champion, Kayla Thompson. I wanted to so bad! But now, I don't have a chance of ever becoming as good as Kayla.
Mom just texted me, 'I won't be around for dinner, help yourself to leftovers.' Well, great, now I have to warm up leftovers. I despise leftovers, but, it is what it is.
Oh! I just got an email, from my old stable that I rode at, Majestic Willows. Oh My Gosh!! The email is from my old trainer Rachel. It says that KAYLA THOMPSON heard about me from Rachel, and she is coming to our ranch TOMORROW to see me! Is this really happening?!! As I head downstairs to dinner, I think about this. I can't wait! As I eat dinner I forward the email to my mom and dad, so they know to be expecting a visitor.
When I wake up the next morning, I feel excited, and I don't know why, then I realize, Kayla is coming today! I jump out of bed and start pulling clothes out of my drawers. When I am done, my room looks like a disaster area, but I am pleased with the outfit I picked out. I'm wearing a teal pullover sweatshirt over a teal tank top, and white capris. As I race down the stairs, I wonder what she wants to see me for, I mean, I'm just that girl who paralyzed her right leg. I am also wondering when she will be coming. Then, just as I am putting my cereal bowl in the dishwasher, I hear the doorbell ring.
Oh my gosh! This must be her! I race to the door and open it. A tall, sophisticated looking woman is standing in the doorway. She has long, dark brown hair, swept into a low bun. She is wearing cream-colored expensive looking breeches, and a white polo shirt. She also has this unexplainable calmness about her. “Hello” she says “I’m Kayla Johnson, you must be Katie” “Um, yes,yes I am” I stutter, “Please come in.” She steps inside the house and we sit down in the living room. “So, I hear you are quite a rider” says Kayla, “I was” I say sadly and look down at my leg. We sit in silence for a few moments and then Kayla says “Well, since you aren’t in riding clothes, could you please go get in them?” “What?!” I gasp “But, I don’t ride anymore!” Horrified, I stare at Kayla, does she honestly think she is going to get me on a horse? “And, and” I am so embarrassed, but I have to tell her “I’m scared of horses” “Ah” says Kayla “Well, that is why I am here. To help you conquer your fears.” So that’s why she is here, she thinks she can make me ride again! “Well, ok, I guess” I say, and then I think I can’t believe I just said that! I guess it’s because of her calm demeanor. I still can’t believe I said that! What if something goes wrong?!
I stumble upstairs to my room and slowly pull my breeches on. A few minutes later, I meet Kayla outside. “Now, she says “Let’s go tack up your horse” “What?!” I screech again “I can’t do that! I haven’t done it in 6 1/2 months!” “Then now is the perfect time to do it again, and don’t worry, I’ll help you” then she smiles, and looking up at her, I feel calm again. We walk down the barn aisle and I turn towards Diamond’s stall (Diamond is the gentlest horse in the place; I learned to ride on her) but Kayla keeps walking. She stops at Ginger’s stall. “Is this your horse?” She asks “Yeah, that’s my horse” I say “But that’s not the horse I’ll be riding, is it?” I ask weakly “Of course, says Kayla “She is your horse, and I can tell from they way she’s focusing on you, she is ready to repair your bond” I look at Ginger, and funnily enough, I do see something in her eyes, it’s like a warmth or something. It take a deep, shuddering breath and go to get her tack.
When I come back, Kayla is standing in Ginger’s stall massaging her or something, anyway, she is rubbing behind Ginger’s ears, and Ginger seems to be completely relaxed. “What are you doing?” I ask curiously “I’m massaging her, it makes her more relaxed, and it teaches her that I won’t hurt her” “Wow” I say and I walk into Ginger’s stall.
Tacking Ginger up goes by quickly, with Kayla right beside me teaching me better ways to do things, and just helping me in general. While I lead Ginger out, Kayla walks beside me and for some reason I feel less apprehensive than I would if I was doing this with someone else (You might be wondering what happened to my crutch; I can walk without it, but I have to kind of drag my leg behind me).
We get to the arena, and all my fears come flooding back. Kayla must have seen my apprehension because she turns me towards her and says “Katie, I know you are scared, but please trust me. I’m here to help you” these words are reassuring to me, but then something hits me “How did you find out about me? Why are you even here?” I ask “Rachel, your trainer and I are old school friends, and she called me a few weeks ago, and told me that she had been in touch with your mother. Your mom said that she was tired of seeing you so down and asked if there was anything Rachel could do to get you back around horses. Then Rachel called me, and here I am” as Kayla finished her story, I suddenly find myself thinking, that maybe, just maybe, I could compete again. This idea makes me feel like jumping up and down, and I find myself hugging Kayla! When Ginger starts trying to but her nose in, I start laughing, and I find that I’m not as scared as I thought.
With Kayla’s help, I heave myself into the saddle. “Now, what I want you to do, is focus on how your leg feels, try to move it, and try to use it as you normally would, don't push it, but try” instructs Kayla as she clips a lead rope to Ginger’s halter. I nod, and Kayla starts walking, Ginger starts as well, and suddenly I realize how high up I am. It’s been a long time since I last rode, and I’ve forgotten how it feels.
I start focusing on my leg, and trying to move it. I’ve been going to physical therapy every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday since the accident, and doctors have said that there is nothing wrong with the bones or anything, so I guess maybe I could move it. I’ve also heard doctors saying that there is a possibility that I could regain partial mobility, but they haven't said that to me, so I guess they don’t want to get my hopes up or something.
I start thinking about moving it, and though she said don’t force it, I’m going to. I can’t pass up a chance to maybe compete again. And I think maybe it’s working, because I feel like I can kind of feel something.
Oh my gosh! I think I moved it! Yep, I definitely moved it! Maybe only an infinitesimal amount, but I did! “Kayla!” I say “I think I did it!” Kayla whips around and stares at me “Are you serious?” she asks then says “Whoa” to Ginger “Yes! I think I did!” I shriek. I try it again, and this time I move it about an inch. I can’t believe it! “Katie! This is wonderful! I thought it would take at least a week” Kayla says. We try it at a trot, and try some leg aids with it, and I think it’s working! I can’t believe it!
It’s about 6:00 right now, and I’m in my room waiting for dinner. I told my parents and brothers about my day and they are almost as ecstatic as I am. I just can’t believe it! To work with an Olympic champion, stop being scared of horses, and to regain some mobility in my leg, all in one day! Who knows what things I can accomplish with Kayla! And that is the best part! Kayla said she’ll be my coach! I am so excited! This is the perfect ending to my 6 months of awfulness, and the perfect beginning to the rest of my life.
