The "Monster"
123Liliana

Last night there was a monster
Sticking its head through the window
I screamed as it grabbed my covers and tried to pull them
Then dad came down to help
I told him, "There's a monster!"
He turned on the light.
It turns out that that monster
Was my smart Arabian black stallion Freedom!
I had forgotten to close my window last night
And here he was,
With his head in the window!

Ponies are the Best!
123Liliana

Dolphins are cute
Rabbits are nice
Kittens are cuddly
And dogs don't get lice.
These all may make
Very good pets
If you have a lake
Where the dolphin could rest.
But I think a pony
Is the best one of all
They are not phony
And they work in the fall
For you if you wish
But I'd let it play
Under the sun
Every weekday!

The Scholarship | Part 2

"Mum! I'm going to miss the plane and Razzle Dazzle is waiting!"

"Coming, Coming, Coming!"

My name is Lucy, I'm 16 years old and I'm going to River Creek National Equestrian School. This is all the way in England and I'm going to be away from my home for 8 months! I'm wearing black jodhpurs, a red polo shirt with a white horse head on it inside a horseshoe. My Strawberry blonde hair was parted and spilt into 2 braids. My horse, Razzle Dazzle (I know, cool name!) is a paint horse with black, brown and white patches on his body.

The reason why I'm leaving Australia to go to England is that I won a scholarship at the most prestigious school in Europe, sorry practically the world! I couldn't resist it, the offer was too good.

My mum comes running down the stairs.

"Awwww. My little girl is all grown up! Let me take a photo!"

"Mummmm! We don't have time!"

"Just 1, please!"

"Arrghhhh!! Fine!"

I turn and smile at the camera. When I heard the first 'click' I stopped smiling.

"Okay Lets go!"

"One more please!"

I stopped and death glared my Mum. "Fine"

I dabbed and once I heard the second click I got my suitcases and walked out the door to the car.

I put my stuff in the back and went to the trailer with Razzle Dazzle in it and made sure he had enough food and water for the journey. He is coming on the plane with me which is kinda cool.

I got out of the trailer and locked it up and double check it.

I hopped in the passenger seat and Mum started the engine. We drove down the long driveway and I wave goodbye to my home and my dog was was chasing the car (as usual) and was soon tired and turn back to the house.

"Remember to call EVERY night." she said, "and tell me if anyone of those mean horse girls who think that they are so good and in reality are actually really bad bully you, okay?"

"You've been watching "Free Rein" lately haven't you?" I asked.

"Maybe... but that's not the point. Call and tell me okay." My mum says seriously

"I will call you every night and tell you every detail."

"Great. Oh, have you texted your roommate lately?"

"Yep, Stephanie is already there. She put up photos of horses and of our favourite band, BTS"

"I really don't know how you go into them..." My mum said as she sighs.

Soon enough we were at the airport with my Mum checking me in and signing papers about Razzle Dazzle who was, by the way, standing next to me eating grass outside. He is really embarrassing sometimes. Soon I said my goodbyes and hopped onto the plane.

Here I come England!

"Bennnn." I growl. Boys are so wierd, they think that if somethings is strange, dirty and/or is mysterious, they have to check it out. I sigh and climb in after him. I let the board slam behind me and I am instantly surrounded by darkness. I take out my phone and turn on the flash light. The passage I am in is the length of the hayloft, but there is another hallway the leads in front of me. I reach up, then after feeling no ceiling, slowly climb to my feet. I can feel the hard wood about a foot above my head so I walk to the left, along the wall of the hay loft. I am almost to the end when all of a sudden, I step down. I thought I was falling, but then I realized that I had just stepped on a door in the floor. I shined my light down at my feet, and there was a solid trap door about three feet by three feet. I stepped off it again the knelled. There was a metal ring attached to the wood and I yanked on it, opening the door with a loud screech. I looked down the hole and saw steps leading down the small opening. I cautiously placed my foot on the first step, and when it held, began descending down. There were only four steps, and I reached up and closed the door above my head. To continue I had to crawl on my hands and knees, but as I went further, I saw a light ahead of me. When I close enough, I turned off my light and saw where the light was coming from. There was another door on the side of the wall that was disguised as a vent. I pushed it open and lowered my self in. When I look around, I was in the office down stairs in the barn. I closed the vent and walked out. Suddenly a hand grabbed my shoulder. I whirled around with my fist raised. "Whoa take it easy there" Ben said stepping back. I sighed and lowered my arm. "Sorry, but you shouldn't sneak up on people like that." He looked around then said "Was that cool or what? I found, that if you went passed the vent door, you can get anywhere in the barn, even in some of the stall." Then I heard my dad calling "Brooke, we got to go, Ben, your mother came over to get you too." I whispered to Ben as we walked back. "Don't tell your mom, we need to figure out whats going on before anyone else knows." He nodded then ran off to find his mom. I approached my dad, who was scrubbing the floor of a stall. "Hey dad, ready to go" He stood up the replied. "Yep, lets go by some horses."

Thinking About Hard Work
By 123Liliana

I snorted. Those pesky flies were on me again. I couldn't wait until Winter came. Flies mean spring and summer. Spring and summer mean planting and sowing seeds. Planting meant hard work for me. I was relived to see my owner come with the fly spray. He was my friend. He led me to my stall, and I sighed happily as he forked hay and put water in there for me. I nuzzled him in thanks, and I began eating. I wasn't working yet, at least.

The Race
123Liliana

Gallop faster
Faster, go!
Please do not
Go so slow!
We need to win
This important race!
Please hurry!
Quicken your pace!
Good! That's better!
Pass them all!
Oh no! Oh no!
Please don't fall!
We need to win
This important race!
Yes, that's right!
Quicken your pace!
Sweet Dreams, run!
The money's ours!
We've passed the line!
It DIDN'T take hours!
Thank you friend!
Thank you a lot!
I'm so rich now!
$3000 is a lot!

Training horses is worth all the work. It is easier if you whisper to them.

All year long, I hoarded information on hopeful horses. I was growing out of my pony and was looking for a larger equine to fit my needs. It wasn't easy. Barbie was just 12.3 hands tall, and at 5' 2'' at twelve years old, and still growing, I needed to find a more suitable horse. I still rode her, and loved her greatly, but the feeling of a large animal underneath me vanished. Now I was riding a pony that made me look big.
I continued to scan the horse sale websites, and searched the newspapers for a cheap riding horse. My sister had just gotten her horse, and I was becoming frantic. She was riding, and I was stuck on a Welsh pony. I was in the pitts. I was happy, but I felt I needed more.
My mother soon picked up on my attitude. "The right horse will come along. Just wait for it. Let God land it in our laps."
The comment left my mind to wander. Did God actually know where to put horses? Did he use the Pony Express? What if we got the wrong horse? The questions raged. How could I wait?
I continued to search the web, finding thirty-six million dollar Arabians to two hundred dollar shetlands. No horse seemed just right. I began to get hopeful when I found a 14.1 hand chestnut gelding, but he was sold soon after.
I sighed, sitting in my makeshift tree house in the barn pasture. Barbie nibbled on my boot toes. Why couldn't I find a horse?
I looked at the clear blue sky, hopeful. I'm sorry, God. I should be patient. I won't look at a single horse for sale again. I promise.
I kept to my promise and the month went into August. No horse yet. The urge to peer at the web was strong, but I refused. This was in God's hands.
One day, a car rolled into our long gravel driveway. I recognized it to be our neighbors. Mom walked over to them. I watched from a window in the house. I wondered what they were saying, because Mom's expression was serious the whole time. When she came back inside and they had gone, I looked at her inquiringly. "Want to go look at a horse tomorrow?" she asked simply. My heart leapt.
I had known our neighbors had a horse. The previous day, my Mom and brother, Wayde, had found the horse loose in the field. They walked her back home, and all the while my Mom guessed the horse to be some thirty old nag, because of how skinny and scruffy she was, but was alarmed when she heard that she was only three! Mom told that if they ever needed help with her, we were always willing. The story made my heart sink back down.
The next day, we walked to our neighbors, a half mile away. The horse was almost black, her tail had a chestnut tip, and her back legs were glowing with chestnut as well. Her head was speckled with grey. It was hard to pin point her coloring. It looked like a roan coat, but I wasn't sure. She did looked old and worn, as Mom had described. Her coat was weathered, and her body was very skinny. The owner came out, a large bag of treats in his hands.
"She wasn't good at her training, and has been off her feed." he told us seriously. So you claim. I added quietly. It made me sad and angry to see such a young animal so skinny.
The mare nipped up the treats offered to her, trying to reach the bag as well. When the owner didn't offer another treat, the mare started to paw angrily. Instictively, I quickly reprimanded her. She stopped the pawing imediately, eyeing me curiously, wondering what I had done.
My sister and I exchanged glances. She was trainable. Mom talked it over with them and agreed to take her. She was offered to us for free.
"Mom! She's really only three?" I gaped at her, examining the mare. Every bone stood out prominently. Mom nodded sadly. "She would have gone to meat if we hadn't taken her." Mom told us. I petted the mare effectionatly. She swung her around. Mom groaned at the force. We took turns leading the young mare. She held her head tall, making our arms tired. I guessed the mare to be fifteen hands.
At home, Goldie and Barbie whinnied to the mare. The mare's answering whinny was low and loud. I was surprised it was so low. I'd never heard a whinny so low. It shook me to the bone. We kept her in the stall in the barn, giving her hay and water. She paced around, checking everything out. She certainly seemed bright. We named her Sedona.
I sighed. I had a horse.
The first year of owning her was completely devoted to getting her back in form and her training. The second year, I rode her and trained her. The third year, I brought her to a trusted trainer friend to see what her progress was. We left her there for two weeks, and he told us that she was great!
She’s six now, and I can still not get over how I had such a wonderful horse. She matches my personality perfectly. Adventurous, stubborn, fast, and just plain silly. How do I know this? For one, well, I own her. But, for another, she's done so many things to prove it.
For example, one day Dad was trimming the trees in the pasture. The chainsaw cut the branches, it's engine roaring. All the while, Sedona had her nose popped over Dad's shoulder, wondering what he was doing. Also, the vet taught me to do a mouth exam. And each time I pull her tongue to the side, she'll leave it out. That always makes us have a good laugh. And, she plays with our dog, everday if she can.
Doing these things and more, she's taught me so much. To be patient in everything I do. I don't know ow many times I've lost patience with her, but now I've recovered my patience and never forget it. She’s reminded me to love the things I have. And, to trust myself. I was so unconfident, and still am in certain things. I thank God for such a miracle. My 1,200 pound miracle.
