Chapter 2 Summerside Refuge
The morning came, and brought a surprise with it. Kate Spencer, a neighbor and busy body, waved from the parking lot, hopping out of her cadilac. Her hair was dyed to match the color of a raven's wing. A dark, blue black. Her pale white skin seemed paler today because of it.
"So, to what do we owe the pleasure of your visit? You looking for a horse?" Trixie asked Kate. "Goodness, no! Got too many back at my ranch. Really, I was here to give you something. You see, my dog had her pups a few weeks ago. Soon, they'll be weaning and they'll need good homes. You think maybe you'd like one or two?" Kate asked.
"Oh? What breed are they?" Rajeana suddenly asked. Trixie knew her friend was just trying to humor the women, so she wasn't surprised by the sudden interest.
"Lab. They were born in three colors. Cream, chocolate, and black. You can have your pick." Kate assured.
"We'll think about it. Thanks for thinking of us." Rajeana smiled. "You're welcome. Call me if you make up your mind." Kate incouraged. Just then, they heard the crunch of gravel and they turned to see a police car driving down the driveway.
"Well, that's our ride. We really must be going." Trixie said, her smile feeling urgent.
"Looks like you're going to be having an exciting day. Something happening?" Kate asked curiously. She was also the town snoop.
"I don't think you'd be interested, Kate. Just some things we need to look into." Trixie told her. Actually, she thought Kate Spencer would be very interested in it, she just wouldn't let her have the satisfaction of knowing their business.
"Seems mighty peculiar, with you havin' a police escort and everything. It could make a body suspect many things." Kate quiped, waving her hands in the air for effect. "I guess so. Well, nice to see you, Kate. Goodbye!" Rajeana said sincerely. Trixie and Rajeana jogged eagerly over to the police car.
"At least you didn't say 'see you later'. That would have incouraged her for sure." Trixie whispered. Rajeana chuckled, nodding. They had made a good get away, at least.

"This just a normal, routine check, or is it a rescue op?" chattered the deputy assigned to escort Trixie and Rajeana. Rajeana had the pleasure of sitting in the front seat, while Trixie sat in the back, feeling like a jailbird. "We don't know yet. I guess we'll see." Trixie sighed.
The road slipped by.
It took them half an hour to reach their destination, but they made it. But what greeted their eyes was just an old farm house. A rusty-wired pasture, a barn, and piles of junk were all that held place in the yard.
Trixie looked around the yard skeptically. Anyone would be crazy to keep a horse here. It was a good thing she didn't see a horse- yet.
"This here's the place." the deputy said simply. Trixie nodded, then started her march to the front door to announce the meaning of her visit. Her knock was quickly answered by a gruff yell from inside. "Who is it?"
Trixie cleared her voice, and responded in just as strong a tone. "Trixie Brown. I'm here to check out your property and-" the door opened to show a tall middle aged man who needed a shave.
"Why?" he demanded.
"We have recieved concern on a horse you have." Rajeana said from behind Trixie.
"A horse?" he asked, growing an amused expression.
"Yes. Now, if you'll just let us have a look around-"
"I don't have a horse! Never had a horse a day in my life!" he laughed, slapping his thigh. "Must be some misunderstanding."
"That may very well be, sir. But, please let these nice ladies have a look around." Suddenly the deputy was right beside Trixie. He spoke with such a serious and level tone, Trixie couldn't help but think that the farmer had better know what was good for him.
The man's words caught in his throat when he saw the badge on the deputies shirt pocket. "Uh, sure. The barn's down that way. You're, uh, welcome to look." he said, flashing his eyes around nervously.
Trixie studied him suspiciously, then started her patrol. Cob webs and dust marked the entrance to the barn. Trixie couldn't help but feel the eeriness that serounded this place. She glanced up into the half-hay loft. It was crowded with old, dusty hay. Then she dropped her gaze to the barn floor. There were three broken, old stalls, a lone saw horse, a ride mower and a push mower, a tractor, and an old peice of farm machinery. But, there wasn't a single living animal, except for some pigeons rustling in the rafters, and mice looking for scraps of feed.
"Hmm. Let's look outside." Rajeana suggested. Trixie nodded. No sense staying in here, when there were other areas to inspect, as well.
They strode outside and scanned the pasture. If a horse had been in this fence, it wouldn't have had much trouble getting out. Trixie sighed. The search was over.
She walked with Rajeana back over to the farmer.
"Judging by remains of manure, it appears you've had a horse here before." Trixie admitted cautiously. The farmer nodded. "Sold it a while back." he said a little louder than necessary.
"Who was it sold to?" Trixie continued. The farmer scratched his chin. "Don't rightly remember." he said. Trixie pulled out her business card and handed it to him. "Well, give us a call if you do. Thank you for your time." she said lastly.
They walked back down the way and got back into the deputy's car. Trixie couldn't help looking back as they drove away. Something was wrong here, and she intended to find out what.

It had been a long day, but it wasn't over yet. It was only lunch by the time they returned home. They ate a quick meal, then went back to work outside. A few people came to look at some horses, but there were no buyers. That of which made it an even more discouraging day.
Five-thirty found Trixie and Rajeana mucking stalls. It wasn't the most enjoyable chore at a horse refuge, but it wasn't very hard.
Then, Rajeana cleared her throat, and everything changed.
"Have you been thinking about Kate's offer? About getting a dog?" Rajeana asked.
Trixie turned quickly to stare at her.
"Why would we need a dog?" she gaped.
"Well, I was thinking of the horses. They may be adopted out to people who have dogs, and they haven't even been desensitized to them. And, we could use a guard dog." Rajeana decided. Trixie sighed. Her friend had a point.
"Ok, ok. Sure. But if he chews up my boots, you're paying for them." Trixie stated firmly. Rajeana rolled her eyes, then sighed with a grin.
"Deal."

Against my better judgment I'm entering this piece of junk with its Edgar Allan Poe-influenced rhythm.

DANCE
By: Nat2

Round and round the partners wheel
Circling; flying; spinning.
The dance is something each can feel
From the very first beginning.
Their feet tap out a rhythm beat
Their hearts match stride for stride—
In soaring movements they complete
Each motion; saunter; ride.
Like castanets, the horse’s hooves
Drum out a thrumming theme;
In subtle sways the rider moves—
This one united team.
Where one begins, the other ends,
One finishes, one’s starting;
Their energy and action blends
And leaves no room for parting.
With confidence and well-earned pride
The horse and rider prance;
Will your heart too yearn yet to try
And learn this ageless dance?

Cant You Feel the Wind?
By: PonyGal103

Rushing
Whipping
It pulls me in
Cant you feel the wind?

Riding
Racing
All alone in the world,
Cant you feel the wind?

Screaming
Calling
It asks me to join
Cant you feel the wind?

All it Takes
By:PonyGal103

All it takes is the softest rush
The smoothest touch, the softest brush
The wind calls to me in a quite voice
It carries with it, a simple choice

All it takes is a smooth velvet nose
A nicker of love, as she blows
The love that lingers, in her eye
The hardest thing is this good bye

All it takes is a fleeting glance
This last look, is one of chance
Will she ever forget my love
I know I will never, forget my Dove

Riding The Trails
By: kdude

This story is from my pony Popcorn`s point of view

I was waiting in my stall when my Owner kdude came in. She brushed me and saddled me up. We rode all the way to Wiggins then the Forest Adventure Trail where we got a picture of a trapper. Then I was ready to go home to my stall. I love going for rides but I was tired and ready for my stall. Once we got to the barn kdude brushed me and I got a yummy tub of hay.
