Feels around and then grabs something and pulls on it. A board with brush pasted to it is pulled away from the hill. now you can all well see the hole in the hill. | Marie: I like to ride horseback here, and one day I noticed that there was a hole in the hill here(There had been one all the while but it had been covered up). I tied Lizzy to a tree and stepped inside. It looked like there had been someone in there recently and I was sure I heard something and I got frightened. I ran outside and hopped on Lizzy and didn't come back here for quite a while. Then I got to thinking about it again and then I remembered that my father had mentioned that people had hid here when Indians used to attack us and that there was a cave or so on our property. So I decided that this was one of those caves but then I got to thinking about the noises I had heard. It sounded like a person writing. I went back soon after and found out how to open the door. No one was there that time. I looked and saw some papers and a bed and benches and food and lanterns. I took some of the lanterns after I realized they were ours from the stable. That made me even more frightened as I realized that he had to have been in the stable with Lizzy. I looked at the plans but they made no sense to me. I had a feeling that whoever it was was up to no good so I burnt the papers. Then I found this door leading in here. He has obviously not found out about his because it was completely unused until I started to fix it up ad brought you down here. Both doors are cleverly hid. Soon after, I found Goliath and he was hurt so I helped him and learned to trust and love me. But Mother dislikes dogs and I was going to have to get rid of him so I keep him in here. The man only comes every Monday so I always put Goliath in this side room on Mondays. I have never got a good look at him. I am always too scared. I found this little snake in here. I trained him and he loves me too now. |

Mama-- I think you have done enough work today. Why don't you visit some of our neighbors? I am sure there are some girls your age.
Claire-- If I must Mama, but can I please ride Ivanhoe the Brave? Tis bad enough to be a strange girl, but to be without a faithful friend, it is unbearable.
Mama--I can't see why not. Have a fun time and be friendly.

~Claire tacks up Ivanhoe and starts out riding.It isn't long before she decides that she can't bear to go visiting and she heads out into the woods and stops at a cave near an old mill. She lets Ivanhoe graze and climbs a tree after having made sure no one was watching. |
