okay the exponent of the number says how many time to use them so like 6 with 2 on top is equal to 6 times 6 = 36 and so the six is squared
In the example above, the exponent was "2", but what if it were "½" ? so this is what is x½
x½ is = to the square root of x
(i.e. x½ = √x)
this is because if you square x½ you get: (x½)2 = x1 = x
