***Clicker Club***

Hi Comanche! Welcome back! I haven't been on very much, so I didn't know you were gone, but I'm glad you are back anyway. :-) What have you been up to? Have any good clicker stories for us?

Annahorses, have you thought about all the steps you need to go through in order to teach your terrier to play dead? If you'll take a little time to think about how you would start, and where you would go from there, you should be able to break the entire process down into steps. Then you just start at the beginning.

You other dog trainers out there - have any of you taught your dogs to play dead? What steps did you take?

I had a problem with one of the horses I am training shying at EVERYTHING. So first I charged up my clicker with the horse.

Then I saddled with a Western Saddle and snaffle bit bridle. I tie the reins, putting them through the D rings on the front of the saddle so they work as a check rein, preventing the horse from putting his head down to graze (or get tangled on things.)

Then I take two long lead ropes (about 12 feet) and clip them on to the bit, running the lines through the stirrups on the saddle. With Clicker in my right hand, I ask the horse to step up. That is the command to move forward. I walk behind the horse, just out of kick range.

When the horse does it right, I click. Plus is when the horse shys, I am not scared at all and can ask for forward, turns, back, etc. and get the feet moving without being worried I am going to get tossed.

This worked pretty well, the horse is now working much better under saddle because he FINALLY figured out what I wanted. Win-win. :)

How is everyone doing? I am finally feeling about halfway "normal" now, though I'm still working on it. I'm behind on reading posts, but I'll catch up soon.

I hope everyone is getting to do some clicker training, and if not, that you are enjoying spending some fun time with your pets.

My horse Missy has developed this winter a biting habit. She tries to bite me now when I pic her hooves out and she isn't good with balance. (she also tries to bite me other times besides when I'm picking her hooves out.) I'm working on the biting habit but I'm wondering what should I do to help her balance when I'm picking her hoof up?
Poeple are not always available to help me pick her hooves out, for they watch her head while I pick. What should I do about that? any time I tell her to lift her hooves up she tries to bite me. And I don't have that fast of reflexes to punish her for trying to do so, that's why I need the person to stand there.
