Ava walked down the light brown wooden stalls of Calypso Farm.
Up and down the isle, were several black, brown and white heads poking out for breakfast. Ava was mixing several mashes for the different race horses. Along with her stood Luke and Olivia, who were also working students. Luke was polishing all of the boarders bridles and Olivia was filling up water buckets. Ava had buckets of feed up and down her arms for the hungry horses. One by one she dumped the mashes into the feeders, which the horses devoured. Pride, a dappled grey mare, tried to nip at Ava for her breakfast. >Hold on Pride, your next.< said Ava, pouring feed for Fizzy, Prides neighbor. Ava's last bucket was for Bolt, a black stallion with white spots. He kicked at the door for his breakfast, his nostrils flaring and eyes as white as snow. Ava quickly poured his mash into his feeder and hurried back to the tack room. To her surprise one of the boarders, Lexi, was already there ordering Olivia and Luke around like servants.>Luke! Go get my helmet now!< barked Lexi, snapping her crop at him. Luke spun on a dime and ran out to her tack box, sitting by Bolt's stall. Ava thought to herself >Why is Lexi's tack box in the isle?< Olivia turned around as Ava stepped into the tack room. > Your on Lollipop today Ava and Luke is on Pride, I'm riding Jubilee.< said Olivia who was checking off attendance on Ryan's clipboard. > And Lexi?....< asked Ava trailing off. Olivia looked up from her clipboard with a displeased look on her face. > Lexi is on Bolt today.... < said Olivia with a frown. Ryan, the farms owner walked into the tack room, with a short, chubby man following. > Good Morning, Olivia, Ava, this is Mr Green, Lexi's father.< said Ryan, checking all the saddles. >I suppose these are the working students?< said Mr Green haughtily. Many of the students and boarders couldn't stand Lexi and her father. They would always buy the most difficult but beautiful horses, break them down and then sell them off as brood horses. Ava and Olivia have lost a lot of their favorite horses at the riding school due to the Greens. Although the Greens broke down horses a lot, Ryan couldn't turn them away. They payed for the most expensive boarding which brought a lot of money in for the school. Moments later, Natalie and Sarah walked into the tack room carrying 2 english saddles. >Natalie you are on Blackie and Sarah is on Lizzy.< said Ryan who took his clip board back. Ava,Natalie and Sarah walked into the isle, each carrying a saddle, saddle pad and bridle. Ava walked into Lollipops stall. The brown and white pinto looked up from her hay and sniffed at Ava for treats. Ava groomed Lollipop and set her cotton white saddle pad on her back. After Lollipop was tacked up and ready to be ridden, Ava led Lollipop out into the isle, just as Lexi with Bolt cut her off.> Watch it Marange! < barked Lexi and yanked on Bolt's reins. Ava made a face at her, but continued to lead Lolli to the mounting area. Today's Hack was a trail ride, down by the lake. Ava mounted onto Lollipops back and took off. Hacks were only for the working students at the school before lessons so Ryan can teach the adults. Ava,Olivia and Natalie were allowed to go off on their own. Lexi and Sarah weren't ready to go off alone yet, since they didn't know the trails that well. Ava walked to the edge of the forest into the groomed trail. Lolli picked up a trot and trotted briskly down to the creek. Trotting straight through, Lollipop cleared the creek. Ava squeezed with her legs and asked for a canter. Lollipop lunged forward up the hill, her less flying over every stone or twig that was in her path. Ava's brown hair waved in the wind as Lollipop galloped up and down the slopes of the trails. Ava suddenly saw a big log in her path. Bigger than a shetland pony, roughly 3 feet. Ava sat in her saddle and opened her hand but Lollipop just kept going. Ava couldn't jump that high, her biggest jump was 2,3. She held on to Lollipops mane and leaned forward over Lollipops neck. Lollipop galloped up to the log and leaped over it,sweeping it under her hooves Lollipop cleared the log. Ava let go of her breath and sat down in her saddle and lifted her reins. Patting her neck Ava praised Lollipop. Suddenly she heard another set of Hoofbeats, and beside her came a sweating, heavy-breathing Bolt with Lexi on top of him. Bolt's neck was white with sweat, his mouth was foaming and his step was limping. >Lexi! Bolt is limping!< shrieked Ava as she looked at the abused horse in front of her. > Oh ya, he just does that sometimes, no biggy, were almost done anyway.< said Lexi sharply. Ava wondered. > Your suppose to be with Sarah in the hack field, not on the trails < said Ava worried. > Oh ya, Sarah, she's still back there after our race< said Lexi loosely. > Racing! And you left Sarah alone! She's 8, she'll never make it back! < Ava left Lexi at the barn to cool down Bolt before her lesson. Ava cantered Lollipop up and down the hills looking for Sarah. Lexi was being irresponsible, what if Lizzy had galloped and Sarah couldn't stay on? What if Lizzy had ran onto the freeway next to the farm?
Ava galloped up and down the slopes until she spotted a gray figure lying in the creek. Ava dismounted and ran up to it. It was Lizzy. Ava quickly checked for sprains or broken bones and Lizzy seemed to just have slipped in the creek and had no harm. Ava helped the Mare up and led both Lollipop and Lizzy back to the barn. There she saw Sarah being helped into an Ambulance and Lexi being scolded by Ryan. First time Lexi has actually been scolded before. Ryan saw Ava leading Lizzy back to the barn and ran up to her with Lexi. > Is Lizzy hurt? < asked Ryan worried. > No, she just slipped in the creek < said Ava reassuringly. Olivia took Lizzy to the barn to be examined by the Vet. Ryan had no time to finish up the situation cause he had Ava,Lexi and Luke's Lesson. Ava saw Bolt all cooled down with ice and a cooling pad. And Luke tacking up Pride. Ava decided to give Lollipop her lunch, 2 flakes of hay. 20 minutes later all the horses were tacked up and in the indoor ring. After warming up the riders had to jump 4 jumps. Luke went first, he trotted his opening circle and galloped straight to the first fence. Pride gracefully cleared the first line. And bending beautifully around the turn to the next line. He slowed to a canter to rebalance Pride and then leaped over the last fence. Lexi was next. She went straight to a canter and was ahead of Bolt which made Bolt take off to far away from the jump. He took the second fence nicely but after that he was in a raging gallop. Galloping as fast as he could, he was too quick around the turn making him stutter before the third fence. His eyes white with fury and nostrils flaring he was about to take off for the fourth fence and CRASH. Bolt refused and turned to thrown Lexi into the jump. Bolt galloped and jumped over the gate which led to the outside. Bolt was galloping outside of the farm with his reins over his head and stirrups dangling. Ryan jumped the gate and ran after the upset Stallion, but couldn't catch him. At some point Bolt dashed into the woods. Ava couldn't pursue him on horseback so she leaped off Lollipops back and ran after Bolt. If Bolt ran far and fast enough he could already be on the roads and then he could be anywhere! Ava ran as fast as she could and finally saw a panicking black horse caught in a vine. She ran up to Bolt and slipped the reins back over his head. She freed him from the vine, as he quickly continued to gallop off, ripping the reins out of Ava's hand. Ava couldn't catch the Stallion, he was too quick. She ran around the woods and out into the fields, where Bolt was nibbling on grass, she saw how the Stallion had ripped Lexi's girth apart and had freed himself, his bridle was thrown in the woods and he was free as a bird. Ava walked up to the stallion, who finally was calm like he always was. She stroke his mane and check him for injuries. He didn't like being ridden, he just liked being a stallion, wild and free. Ava did something very courageous. She hopped onto Bolts back and guided him with her eyes and legs to the nearby Beach just down the trails. She dismounted and petted him one last time. >Be free,Be a Stallion, Be Bolt< whispered Ava to Bolt as her eyes watered up. Bolt galloped down the shore line, rearing and splashing in the water. Ava decided that was whats best for him, Bolt shouldn't be a riding school horse, he needed to be someones loved animal or a free animal. Ava couldn't keep him, her family couldn't afford a horse. Ava waved one last time and headed back to the riding school.Months past after Ava's decision, the riding school got funding from the State, Lexi was scolded for her behavior and removed from the riding school and the riding school got a replacement horse for Bolt. Sadly, Sarah had been hospitalized from the impact of Lizzy landing on her hip, she will have to recover, but there is hope for Sarah to be able to ride Lizzy again. Ava was clipping the trails and setting up jumps with Ryan when she heard a whinny, Bolt came galloping up to them. Ava couldn't believe it, Bolt actually came up to them.> Ava, me and your mom have been talking about this for a while and, she's allowing you to keep Bolt, he isn't allowed to gallop on the beach anymore since he is a disturbance to the public area. So the city is paying for his care and you will be allowed to own him.< Ava was so happy, a stallion, all to herself!
She hopped on Bolts back and galloped tackless back to the barn. Sometimes a giving up something in the moment, can pay you back later. We will never know how long Ava keeps Bolt but one thing we know, she'll cherish every moment with him.

Why you should join 4-H
by xKaylenex

4-H is an organization that runs club across the country. Several clubs are about animals such as horses, pigs, cows and several others. Some clubs handle meat or wool production, getting eggs from chickens and getting milk from cows or even goats. But not all clubs are about animals, some are about sewing, forage or even technology.
The purpose of 4-H is to teach youth and senior level club members teamwork, leadership and what its like to be a part of a community. 9-13 year olds are considered youth members and 14-18 year olds are considered senior members. Kids that are ages 6-9 are considered clover buds, they may attend meetings but may not hold an officer position and vote. Essentially not official members but are still allowed to participate.
All club meetings (unless specified) are usually under the Roberts Rules of Order.
Beginning with pledges, old and new business and then adjournment. After the business part, clubs usually have an educational activity, such as a gift exchange during christmas, or a fun game to play. Some clubs even talk about there projects. Project animals are the members animal of which they take care of and do projects on such as braid mane on your horse or shear your sheep. Projects are what keeps 4-H going all month long.
Its perfect for homeschoolers that want to meet new kids that may also be homeschooled.
Your club might also participate in several events as a team. Such as a state horse show where a horse team works together to win or a bunny hopping club hops as a team to get the fastest time.
If you don’t know which club to join, ask neighbors or kids at your school if they go to any clubs. Sometimes, clubs don’t seem interesting but when you actually go the activity is awesome. If you like horses maybe a horse club would be right, or you might like sewing too. Sometimes you can even do clubs such as meat or wool production just to see what its like. It doesn’t cost anything to join a 4-H club so you can always decide that its just not meant for you.
4-H is run like a business, so you have Officers. The President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. The President runs the club and calls the meeting to order and adjourns it (ends it), goes through the list of business and makes sure that the club comes to order. They do not run the club, thats what the leaders (adults in charge) do. The Vice President assumes all the responsibilities of the President when he/she is absent and helps the President make decisions. The Secretary keeps track of all the forms and attendance, writes out letters on behalf of the club and records the minutes (things they did) at the last meeting. The Treasurer keeps track of the clubs money, records all transactions and makes out checks. The Treasurer gets one of the leaders as a mentor so that no false statements are made during checks.
If you would like to join 4-H, contact the local county 4-H to join a club. A 4-H year runs from September/October (depending on club) to August but you can join at any time.
Join a 4-H club today and learn what its like to be a real part of your community.

Title: My Horse's Wish
By: http

Could you bed me down with kindness.
On the soft sweet words os love...

Could you ride me in man's finest.
With hands light as a dove...

could you teach me with old wisdom.
By the laws of just and fair...

Could you be my friend forever.
With a trust so true and rare...

Could you meet me in the meadow.
With grasses green and sweet...

Could you free me without sorrow.
On the plains of loam and wheat...

Could you say farewell with honor.
On the day my life is through...

And remember me forever.
As I shall remember you.

~The Fair Miss Julia Chamberlain~
Chapter 1: The Ball
By Horsesforever12

"Julia Chamberlain, I am blessed to even be in your presence." The tall Russian bent his horizontal spine in a swift, elegant action to place a soft, rather cold kiss on the fair lady's fingers.
"Ah, monsieur! Genre d'homme*! You are too kind," the dame, a petite, eye-luring, Frenchwoman, flashed her gray eyes.
"Yerunda**...it is my pleasure. And...your husband?" the Russian turned his green, twinkling eyes to the skinny, long-legged Englishman flanking the right side of the fair lady in almost violent protection.
"La! Yes, this is he," Julia declared in alluring flamboyance and turned quite sharply upon her mate, arousing the millions of jewels clinging to her skin and swathe. "The charming Alexander. Do be pleasant, my dear. Ah," sighed the lady as the two young gentleman shook stiff hands and exchanged heavy two-second stare downs, "This is most becoming. What a dreamy gala...La!" the Miss Julia exclaimed, her rows of glimmering white teeth appearing from beneath her rose pink lips like secret pearls. "La man! Come, we shall dance. In France, we do not waste balls while we stand around like statutes." In gay persistence, the lady towed her husband's form behind her and stepped onto the ballroom floor, scrubbed and smoothed like polished ebony, and began a high-stepping, dress-swishing dance resembling a ballet pirouette. Julianna Chamberlain, a Frenchwoman in both blood, accent, and attire, let her drooping satiny black curls fly loose from their lieux*** of ribbons and diamonds and slap in a prepossessing disposition across her flushed porcelain cheeks. Julianna was the utmost definition of exuberant, vivacious panache. Populous attracted to her like gnats to a light, and the poor Alexander was nearly faint from watching her so closely that she would not get into trouble. Julia did not understand England nor its natives like her mother country of Paris, France. What she understood was that English men and women enjoyed fashion, sport, and species of femininity and masculinity that portrayed vast aesthetic and virility, and her possessing all three qualities quickly made her become an idolized goddess in Britain's mind. Alexander was of a higher rank; he possessed wealth, fair looks, and enjoyed social gatherings, but he did not seem to draw the flies as much as his lovely Julianna did. She was a creature bred from the very womb of panache, and popularity seemed to be the food of which she lived upon. Yet, as Alexander studied those wonted twilight hued eyes that he had grown accustomed to seeing every day of his life, something queer stirred in his soul. They danced and swam in gayety, but they also hid. They masqueraded a hidden enigma that he had not noticed before. A secret...cold, dark, morbid...it stole into his very being and chilled his blood mid-flow. Wild horses could not drag that secret out of the fair Julianna, he knew, but all the same a strange hesitation formed in Alexander's heart. Amongst the laughing and swishing and twirling Alexander's frown deepened with his thoughts. Something was not quite right with the dear, fair Miss Julianna
Chamberlain. And he was determined to find out.

Title: The Haunted House
By: Iluvkitties (with help from big sis Horsesforever12)

Chapter 1~ The Black Forest

Some people know that there was this haunted house, and nobody wanted to go there. Everybody knows that one time, a long time ago, that there was this girl with her horse and she went inside of the building and she was never found again. There was an evil black horse, and she would haunt you while you sleep and give you bad dreams. She had fiery wings and gleaming black eyes. But a good fairy queen horse took away the bad dreams of the haunted house and the evil black horse. She gave everyone happy, good dreams. One morning, Sally was grooming her horse. Suddenly, a little fairy came in. Sally screamed and dropped her brush. The fairy said, "I will give you no harm. I came for a reason because the black evil horse is coming back again. Everybody is going to have bad dreams again. I need you to save all the people." "Me? I can't do that, I'm just fourteen!" "No, I believe in you," the fairy said. "I will come with you and travel with you to the haunted house." "Me? You think I could do all that amazing stuff?" "Yes," the fairy said. "Now, let us go." "What?! Wait!" And the fairy took out her wand and magically she took them away. And they came to this weird land. "Where am I?" Sally asked. "You are in the black haunted forest." "It is so dark and scary, and my horse is scared." "Your horse will be fine, now lets go." So they went through the dark, spooky woods. Crows crowed, owls hooted, and blackness swirled all around them. "Ah, we are here, now let us go in the evil haunted house."

We're Family
by jeppocat

My and my filly
we've traveled far and wide.
Best friends go best together.
If she was never there,
I'd be lost somewhere inside
My filly is a friend forever

Love is the greatest thing.
Love build a bridge to destiny
Love gives me reason to sing.
"We're Family
My pony pal and me."

Friendship is the key
to what we call trust,
one without a friend
there isn't an us.

She's my family
my pony pal and me.

How to choose a pony
BY xKaylenex

I’m sure you’ve talked about this with your parents. At some point your parents will say the magical word : yes. Now you can’t just go out and buy the prettiest pony you see in a catalog. You need to make sure that you can afford the costs of a pony and not to mention the care of a pony. If your parents aren’t experienced in horses, have them read this article with you.

Costs

Costs go from buying a set of brushes to making out a check for boarding. If your parents said yes to buying a pony, thats only a step of fully owning one. If they can put aside money for a pony, it doesn’t just mean the transaction to the pony’s seller, but to the boarder, the feed store , the vet etc. . So make sure that your ready for the financial commitment.

Heres an approximate list of charges when buying a pony.

Boarding $100 to $1200 per month ($1200 to $14400 pet year)
Boarding can go from a simple field board (where the horse just stays outside all the time) to a deluxe care with training. If you don’t have time to take care of your horse in the morning, then usually they have a package where you can keep your pony there and they will care for it when you can’t. Now the most common packages are : Field Board,Stall Board (inside all the time) and Combined Board (they can go inside and outside). Now heres the catch to buying a pony:They can’t be on grass all the time. Ponies come up lame if they eat too much grass so if you keep a pony on grass they will keep coming up lame. The stall board is an option, but ponies can’t be cooped up all the time. The combined board is good for ponies and horses. It can cost from $300 to $600 but is worth it. Invest some time into looking up nearby boarding barns with good prices. If you ride at a stable, they most likely board too.

Feed and Tack $175 to approx. $600
Now usually you can’t just own a horse and have no tack or tools. You need grooming tools to keep your horse clean. Sharing brushes is a way of spreading diseases similar to sharing a comb when someone has Lice. Sometimes the seller will provide you with the halter, bridle and sometimes an entire set. You also need brushes and grooming tools along with saddle covers, fitted pads for showing etc. So think about these things and decide the approximate price range to spend.Remember, at some point something is gonna break and your gonna need some funds set aside for broken tack replacements. You may not ride without a girth or saddle pad cause its not safe. Now you don’t need four saddles, fifteen saddle pads and two bridles. You need one saddle, two saddle pads (one fun one and a show one if you need it), a bridle and a girth with a spare. Along with equipment you will need feed. Hay is usually free where you board but not all the time. Feed can cost from $5 to $20 a bag so you will need to set aside at least $60 a month if not more for feed. Usually a horse doesn’t just get oats in his/her feeder, they get a mix of oats, sweet feed and other nutrition which can add up fast. If you don’t know what to feed your horse/pony ask the seller what they feed them.

Training $240 to $720 a month
You probably need a trainer to work with you and your horse. Now you don’t need a really fancy trainer, but you need someone who knows enough to help you become a better rider. And what if you go to a show? Your not just gonna walk in the ring and hope you get a ribbon. You need a trainer to advise you on it. A lot of kids think they can just ride without a trainer and what ends up happening is the kid never wins, it thinks the pony is the problem and sells it. Now Trainers are also useful in case of an emergency. If your horse gets sick and you can’t figure out whats wrong with it, sometimes a trainer is cheaper (free) than having a vet come out and give you a diagnosis that can cost $100+. Trainer also help you when your horse may develop some issues, trainers usually know how to fix it. Say your horse is limping, what are you gonna do since you don’t know exactly whats wrong. It could be over work or it could be a serious infection and swelling of the hooves. You may think you know a lot about horses, but don’t risk your own pony because your trying to save a few pennies on training.

Vet and Farrier $50 to $12000+
If you’ve read the price your gonna think : It can’t be that much. Oh yes it can! From a simple routine teeth float or hoof trimming to a severe colic surgery or a splint surgery. Remember horses can hurt themselves or others around them so you need to save some money in case of accidents. Horses need routine teeth float and hoof trim so don’t skimp on it! Best thing to do before you (or soon after) buy a pony, find a reliable Vet and Farrier. Sometimes the boarding barn has a Vet and Farrier already so it saves you the trouble but not always. Keeping your horses environment safe is a must to avoid huge vet bills. If you think your horse can live on half a bucket a day, your gonna get a colic bill in no time. Water and hay should always be available. Now your thinking : I’ll just get an automatic waterer and save myself the trouble. Now guess what, they are not safe whatsoever. Waterers can get backed up and not produce any water or since its electronically run, it can short out and shock the horse when it tries to drink. So thats why its a lot safer to just do it yourself or always worry that it might not be dispensing water. Try to do somethings yourself such as feeding and grooming. If you absolutely can’t be there after school, let a barn mate or stable girl take care of your horse while your away.

We are finally done with costs! Now remember I only listed stuff with a range, other show fees or other stuff can cost money too.

Onto choosing a pony and buying. Now before I go into buying a pony, if the costs don’t look that promising there is another option : leasing a pony. If you don’t know that much about horses but know enough to take care of your lease than this is perfect. Leasing has to options. The first one is : Barn Leasing. This can come at full or half lease. Full lease is essentially yours but your lesson barn still owns it. You don’t need to pay for Boarding or Feed but the things you need to pay for are usually Vet and Farrier and sometimes tack and tools. Half lease is like that but you let the barn use your horse in the lesson program or share with another rider. Now all the options allow you to ride at least twice a week along with your lesson. If your leasing outside of your barn than all other costs apply but you can ride all the time. Onsite outside of your barn is not a good option if your looking for the freedom of your horse. Discuss with your trainer and your parents what you think would be best.

If you don’t think leasing is enough, than read further into choosing a pony.

How to find your dream Pony
Now that your sure you can buy one, lets talk about finding one.
Catalogs
Several horse catalogs have classified ads with horses and ponies for sale.

Websites
If you go online to find horses within your area, you’ll find hundreds of them.

People and Tack Shops
You might go to a tack shop and see an ad for a show pony or a person talking about selling his or her old pony.

If you have your resources, lets talk about actually looking at them and choosing.

Visiting the Pony
You should never buy a horse/pony without looking at it first, this can lead to scams. Find about 3 to 5 horses that you think might work and visit them. Bring along your trainer and have them take a look. Certain horses can look fine in the stall but when they come home they can have splints or galls. First determine if you want a pony that will win or just a pony to ride leisurely. The stake goes way down depending on it. Like your pleasure horse could be a little broken down or have a hiccup in the walk but your show horse could never have those faults. Always ride and check out before buying.

Bringing it home

If you’ve chosen the perfect pony, have boarding and everything set, congratulations! you’ve officially bought a horse! Now you will most likely need a trailer to bring the horse to the boarders or the boarder might deliver him.

Remember to love and cherish your pony forever. You might win many competitions and be on top of the circuit, or get 2 ribbons per year. You now own your own pony, to ride and to care for until the end.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Thanks for reading!

Title: Sunlight and Shadow-
By Silvermaid

The stallion is short and stout,
I laugh and watch him prance about,
Showing off to his chosen mare,
Tossing his head through the warm air.

Sunbeams slant through his mane,
Making shadows dance in flame,
His glossy coat shines dark as ink,
Warm brown eyes slowly blink.

He flicks his tail, and leaps around,
Showing his strength with kicks and bounds.
Rearing up against the sky,
He brings an image of glory nigh.

His hooves eat up the ground,
A wild love that he has found,
He gallops to the lovely mare,
I watch them race without a care.

I know that I will see them again,
After the fall and winter rains,
They will bring a surprise for me,
A lively, wild foal, cute as can be.
