***Farm Girl In The 1920s*** Lets take a trip back in time to the 1920s to a typical farm in Minnesota. You are a farm girl, working, going to school, and thriving on a farm. No running water. Hard work. All the girls wear dresses. It would be scandalous not to!

Hetty:*wakes up early, and gets dressed to do chores. She puts on a dress that is no longer a nice dress, and her rubber chore boots. Out in the barn, she gets a small bucket, and fills it with feed. When it is full, she goes outside to the sheep pen, and feeds her pregnant sheep, Rose, and the other sheep. A few lambs have been born, and they seem more interested in they're mothers milk than the feed. Hetty watches a few more minutes, and then returns the bucket. She grabs another big pail, and fills it with water at the pump. She walks back to the sheep pasture, staggering a bit under the weight of the heavy water pail. She barely manages to lift it high enough to pour the water into the trough. When the trough is full, Hetty puts the pail back, and turns on the pump that goes into the cows trough, and then climbs up the ladder to the hayloft, and, grabbing a pitchfork, pitches hay with great accuracy, down to the cows below. When enough hay has been thrown down, Hetty leans the pitchfork against the wall, and climbs back down the ladder, into the cow pasture. She walks up to Mel, they're milk cow, and pets her for a few minutes*Sue does the pigs, and milks Mel, and Kat feeds Max, and does the goats. Wait, Kat isn't here, shes at the hospital. I'll just do the goats for her, Sue can feed Max, and I'll feed Chocolate and Kat's horse (RM:Who is Kat's horse?). And Sue will do the other horses. Okay so I still have to do the goats, Chocolate, and Kat's horse. Then Sue's doing the pigs, Max, milk Mel, and the other horses. Mama is doing the chickens, and Papa has to work at the mill in town. I better get at it.*goes back up to the loft, and throws a few big pitchforkfuls down the chute. Hetty climbs down the ladder, into the lower barn, and piles the hay into a big wheelbarrow. She goes out to the goats pasture, which adjoins the sheep, and throws the hay in for the goats. Then she puts the wheelbarrow back, and grabs a feed bucket. She takes it to the feed bins, and scoops a coffee can of oats, and half a can of sweet feed into the pail. She mixes it up and walks over to the stall. Kat's horse is in the paddock, but has free access to the stall. Hetty shakes the bucket, and pours the grain onto the large, shallow feeding tray. She goes to the pump, and fills a metal pail with water. She fills the bucket in the stall before Kat's horse comes. Then she gets out of the stall, and puts the pail back. She fills another buckets with Chocolates feed, which is only a coffee can of oats, and walks to Chocolates stall. She sucks in her breath when she finally remembers that Papa had sold her beloved mare three days ago. She walks slowly back to the feed bins, and pours the grain into the oats bin. A tear slips down her cheek, and Hetty wipes it away.*Get over it Hetty.*she tells herself*Your never going to see Chocolate again, even if you save for fifty years. *walks into Chocolates stall, sits down against the wall, and completely breaks down crying. Mama: *Runs out to the fields where Papa is.* Papa! The doctor just called at the Smiths and Mr. Smith galloped over to tell us. Kat has to have her leg- *Mama glances around and makes sure that no one is listening.* Amputated immediately. He says he needs us to come right away. Should I go hitch up the wagon? (RM: I forgot to say that the McKinnleys do not have a telephone, but the Smiths do, and they are neighbors, so they get their calls through the Smiths.)	Maid Mairain & Dawn Rising

Hetty:*looks out of the back of the stall, and sees Mama running across the field to Papa*She was at Smiths.*stands up and leans on the doorpost of the back door in the stall. Papa:Does it have to be immediately?*sighs. Then leans on the plow handles.*Yes, you should. I'll quick finish up here, and be down there in a jiff. Hetty:Oh! I forgot to turn the water off for the cows!*runs out of the stall, causing Kats horse to spook by throwing its head up.*Sorry.*runs to the pump by the cows trough, and quickly turns the water off.*Good thing it didn't overflow. Sue: *explains to Alex* We're short on money. That's what she means by cost. We're barely getting by as it is. *frowns* We'll sell the ponies to save Kat's leg. Oh Why'd she have to get hurt in the first place! Or not! I just remembered, Addie's having a foal, and shes and good puller and so was King, so her foal should be too! We could get a NICE profit!
