My new teacher just gets me more confused...... I don't understand Algebra. When she talks, she doesn't explain it correctly. Can someone explain equations to me? Thanks | imastar1999 & Bambi |

Algebra is an puzzle. It uses letters to express an idea, to help you see what needs to be an answered. Like
x - 2 = 4
is the same as
2 + 4 = x
Why do that? Well sometimes with complex ideas it is easier to have multiple variables like
x/y = z/100 is the equation for figuring out the percentage of any fraction, with z being the percentage. I describe how to figure that out earlier in this thread.
So, algebra uses equations that have variables.
An equation says that two things are equal. It will most always have an equals sign = like this:
x + 2 = 6
That equations says: what is on the left (x + 2) is equal to what is on the right (6)
So an equation is like a statement this equals that.

In the problem you just explained x would equal 4 because x + 2 = 6 just subtract 6 - __ = 2 so that must mean that x = 4

Issabelle, Ask your teacher if you failed the test, Stay after school for a retake. Study Extra hard! I suggest making flash cards for the vocabulary and Match them up!
Or go ask your teacher for a study sheet. Or call a friend up and be study buddies! :)

Candy1 That's correct.
x + 2=6
Just find the missing number.
4+2=6
Then subtract the two variables.
6-2=4
So x=4
That's your answer.
