Hi

That is a pretty big subject. English or Western? Pony or horse? For sure a helmet. The rest depends on what style.

You can send a w mail to Ping A Pony Pal Pundit and see what our members have to say!

Hey Jessie.
If your riding english i suggest:
*A helmet that fits. Move your head side to side, up and down and it should not wobble. Dont get one so tight it hurts, but it shouldnt be loose. I would get one with an adjustable strap, it lasts longer as you get bigger.
* Breeches. Any color, they shouldnt be baggy, or too short up your leg. Get a comfy fit. Jeans work just as well, but get pants that have the padding or strip thing on your knee so you dont get saddle burn.
*Paddock or tall boots. Get a boot that fits you comfortably that you can ride and walk around the barn in. THey should be real boots that protect your foot in the case of a horse stepping on your foot. Go to a horse store around you for that.
*Gloves. The should have a good grip on the inside to hold the reins securely. THey help to prevent blisters on your hands aswell.
*Make sure you have tall socks to wear under your boots.
*Any shirt will work, though i would suggest a shirt that isnt too baggy and loose.
I would ask another pal about western...im quite honestly not very sure. But i would assume all the things i told you would probably apply to the list of western.
Hope this helped!

I you're just starting out riding, you don't need to buy expensive gear. You don't need to buy it all at ance, either, but a helmet is a must, and I'd suggest getting gloves before you start too.

Since I've worked at a horse trekking stable, I've seen quite a few first-time riders. Most are pretty sensible about what they're wearing (a lot come off cruise ships in Summer so they don't have much that would be good for riding) - jeans, sneakers/trainers, t-shirts. I've also seen some pretty terrible choices for going horse riding (how does 3-quarter tights, a short dress and ballet slippers sound?).

- A helmet, definitely - not sure about the US standards, but here in NZ I really recommend only buying helmets that have a special sticker or tag that tells you it complies with the Australian/New Zealand Standard. My helmet is certified to meet this standard, so although it is quite cheap ($70), I know it'll do the job it was designed for just as well as a $300 helmet. It needs to fit properly. as MP said, it shouldn't be too tight or too loose. If it feels uncomfortable, it's probably too tight. If you give your head a good shake to the front and sides and the helmet moves, it's too loose. Be careful about helmets with adjustable sizes (there is a dial at the back where you can change the size). I had one once - the dial was faulty and started skipping sizes and not holding. We went back to the saddlery, and one of the same brand, never been used, was even worse. If you're not sure about helmets, ask a staff member at the saddlery to give you a hand.
-When I first started riding, I wore track pants. They worked well until I could get a pair of jodhpurs. That kind of thing, or jeans, should be fine for your first few lessons. Once you start rising trot, you'll probably want to get either proper riding jeans or breeches/jodhpurs, depending on what style you're riding.
- Shoes with a good heel and covered toes. I started out in gumboots (mine had decent heels). You'll want proper riding boots pretty soon, but as long as you have a pair of shoes with a good heel, that should be fine for the first few lessons.
-Socks. I actually wear bed socks when I ride, but as long as they are a good height and are comfy, go for it.
-Gloves. Some reins available nowdays can be really harsh on your hands, and gloves not only protect against blisters but give you a better grip on the reins. My gloves are really cheap and don't last long ($3/pair), but they have a really good grip. It's personal choice on whether you want thick or thin gloves. I like thin gloves, myself.
-A comfortable shirt. You don't want it too loose as it could get caught, and you don't want it too tight as that could restrict movement. I wear cotton t-shirts, or reasonably tight t-shirts that have a lot of stretch in them. You don't need to buy a shirt from the saddlery unless it's on a great special, and you really like it.
-Jersey/sweatshirt. same as t-shirts.

If you are riding Western, a helmet is a good idea (I've never used one, but its a really good idea. Jeans are fine for Western, I wear Wrangler or Levi jeans. Gloves are good if you are riding for a long period of time, but bare hands is fine for a quick trot around the arena. Boots are a good idea, but don't get just any boots. I know a guy who wore motorcyle boots when riding a horse, and he really hurt my horse (he was riding one of my horses). If you go to a Western Wear and Tack Shop, they will have boots made for riding. If there is no Western Wear shop near you, rubber boots are acceptable. As for shirts, with Western it really doesn't matter. I wear a Western-style riding shirt with a collar (like you see cowboys wearing in movies), jeans, gloves, and Harley-Davidson Western-style riding boots. Hope this helps!

Hi I will jump in here about boots, pull-on boots are the best, laceups that cannot slide off the foot can create a problem if you fall off and your foot gets caught.

Also - fact to store away in case you ever get dragged by a horse - if you roll over so you are facing DOWN your foot will have a better chance of slipping out of the boot.
