***Clicker Club***hi i got rumor my horse and i want to do clicker training. do you have suggestions for how to start? | leenie & Cobalt | 2011-02-26 00:04:36 | | Yeah, Nat. How much do you have to pay to buy a Clicker? | Alyssa & Night Fury | 2011-02-26 18:39:03 | | Well, Lisa, when we got ours, they were about one dollar. Leenie, I would suggest just getting a clicker, and get your horse's favorite food. Then, while your standing by him, just click and give him some treat. This will go on until your horse recognizes that the 'click' sound means treats. | Nat2 & The Price of Valor | 2011-02-26 19:45:58 | | Hi there everyone!
Alyssa, the clicker makes a "click" sound. If you go back to the previous WWs, you can read a bit about the history of the clicker. I had one when I was a little girl; we called it a cricket. I played with it outside a lot, because my mother sent me out whenever I started playing with it! LOL. The "click" marks the precise moment when your animal exhibits the desired behavior.
Nat is correct; you should be able to get one at most pet stores. The "plain" ones - in little plastic rectangular boxes, cost a dollar or two. There are other types of clickers that are more expensive, but those are not really necessary, unless for some reason you find it difficult to work the box clicker. I know that several people on here have other types of clickers.
Lisa, there are people who use the same training philosophy, with a different sound marker. This will be the subject of the clicker column in the March 15th WW! For now, though, suffice it to say that yes you "can" use a different sound, but you will usually achieve the best results with a bona fide clicker. :) | EagleGirl & Deerslayer | 2011-02-28 23:33:57 | | Ok. Thanks, Eagle. I will try to find a Clicker at the local petstore. | Alyssa & Night Fury | 2011-03-02 00:29:47 | | Hi Leenie,
Welcome to the world of clicker training! I just know you and your horse will love it!
If you will go to the newsletter page
http://phplist.clubponypals.com/wigweekly/wiggins_weekly.php
and scroll down to the link for Volume 4 #2 July 17 - 23, 2010, you can access that newsletter. Then scroll down to the Clicker Column. Here is the link for that newsletter, to get you started.
http://phplist.clubponypals.com/wigweekly/ww4-2.html
Then just go back to the newsletter page, and click on each link above that one for each subsequent newsletter. There is a Clicker Column in each one. If you read those, hopefully they will help you to get started.
Please feel free to ask any questions you might have. And let us know what you are planning and doing. We love to hear ideas and progress reports!
Again, welcome to the club! Happy Clicking! | EagleGirl & Deerslayer | 2011-03-02 01:28:31 | | Hi Eagle! Remember Sheltiegirl8? Well, Somehow my account got deleated so now I am back as Sheltiegirl1! A few things have changed, I just got a new Whippet puppy! Well, TTYL!
Steph♥ | Sheltiegirl1 & Chi | 2011-03-03 16:44:37 | | Hello Eagle and everyone!
I dont know if you remember me but I was Sheltiegirl8 a few months ago but somhow my account got deleated. Well, I'm back! | Sheltiegirl1 & Chi | 2011-03-10 17:08:11 | | I don't get clicker training! | Hope & My Pony | 2011-03-26 12:29:56 | | It is just a way to train where the click of the clicker gets to be associated in the pony's (or dog's) mind
click = treat = good
Then when an animal does something right, you can CLICK at the exact right moment to say "yes that is what I want."
I've found it to be so useful I put one on a keychain and wear it at all times, using it consistently has trained my horses to lower their head, back up and wait in the corner while I am putting food in the feeder.
