***Clicker Club***

I trained a pony to fetch using a stall ball. This was before I started using a clicker.

Steps were --

Hang feed bucket on side of corral
Put carrot piece in bucket
Let her eat it
Once she figured that out, I started with the carrot piece and the ball on top of it. Stall balls have a great handle, but the ball shape blocked the carrot so she had to grab the handle to get the carrot.
The pony was very consistent, she always picked it up and dropped it to her right. So I started to position myself where she would drop it so she would drop it into my hands.
Once she got that idea, I stopped putting the carrot in the bucket. When she picked up the ball and I caught it, she got the carrot from me. If I could not catch it then the ball went back into the bucket without a carrot treat.
Once she had the idea that she only got the carrot when I got the ball, I backed up a step, then two, then more...
Eventually she would happily trot out to the middle of a pasture to pick up the ball and return it.

It took about a week to teach her to hand it to me in the barn, another week to get her to do it in the pasture.

Jane, that is really cool! Thank you so much for sharing this - it's so good to have all the steps laid out like that.

Anyone want to try to teach your animal to fetch? This will work with dogs and equines. I have had a cat or two in my life that will fetch, but I have found that it has to be "just the right item". One cat fetched paper wads, another fetched those little plastic bizzy balls, and another fetches puff balls (craft puffs).

So, who is game to teach fetch?

Sure whiskywoo! Tell us what you and your rabbit are working on right now. :-)

Breann - have you started using your training kit yet? Please tell us how it goes.

I am curious. Has anyone decided to teach "fetch"? If so, please write in and tell us how it is going. We'd love to hear a break-down of the steps you use!

Hi everyone! I hope you are enjoying your summer so far. If any of you decide to teach "fetch", we'd love to hear about it here on the clicker club. We'd like to hear about whatever you are doing!

I am getting my mules used to fly masks right now. Rosie is doing great. A few clicks and treats and her mask is on. I just started Little Man this morning. I took the mask and worked it around and on his face. In just a couple of minutes I had it over his ears and on his face. The mask I am using will not fit him, but the mesh is very fine and sheer, so it is not as intimidating as the thick, stiff mesh. Once he is okay with this, I'll introduce him to the other mask, then I will figure out what size he needs and get him his very own!

So, what are you all working on? Can't wait to read all about it!

Can someone explain to me what Clicker Training is?

Hi Jamison. In a nutshell, clicker training is using a clicker to mark the exact moment your pet exhibits a desired behavior. It is followed by a treat to reinforce the behavior. It is a gentle way to tame or teach an animal, and helps to build a strong, lasting bond between you and your pet.

We are so glad you have joined us in the clicker club. I hope you will want to learn more about clicker training. If you have the time, I suggest you start on page 1 of the clicker club, and read through the pages. There are 20 of them, so take your time and read a few a day. As you read, please ask any questions you may have and we will be glad to answer you and discuss things with you.

Also, if you decide you want to read some books on clicker training, there are several authors I recommend. Karen Pryor (cats and dogs, and horses too), Alexandra Kurland, and Sharon Foley are all excellent clicker trainers, and their books are very helpful.

Welcome to the exciting world of clicker training!
