Cool, Bella Grace! I've ridden an actual horse I think twice in my entire life. . .

I've ridden once, and groomed a horse once as well.

No, you didn't sound like you were bragging at all--just excited like I would be. Right now things are too helter-skelter to even think about riding lessons. I figure anyway that the only scenario in which I would have to ride a horse up here would be if the world ended and the cars didn't work, and in that case I'd have bigger problems.

Okay, the newest Horse of the Week is actually pony-sized. The Tokara is a Japanese horse, named for the Tokara Island where it was originally bred. Their numbers decreased because of World War 2, but in 1950 some Japanese doctor whose name I will neither try to pronounce or spell discovered a small herd living on the Tokara Islands, and since then they've made something of a comeback. The Tokara, however, is still considered a rare breed and there are only about 100-120 remaining, designated a Natural Treasure. Tokara Horses are small, only 11 to 12 hands, and usually black. They're calm, easy keepers, short and compact, good for riding and farm use as long as it isn't too strenuous or heavy. Look up some pictures of these things--they're cute and love their independence, much like myself.
