chilly - it is really cool that you have greyhounds! Did you adopt them when they were finished with the track? What is a squawker? What kind of sound does it make? What all can your dogs do so far?

Comanche - Maltese are cute! What are you going to start with? Does she already know how to sit? Our dog will sit, when she wants to. She gets very excited if you even look at her, and then she starts barking and is so loud that she can't hear anything we say. She is not easy to train! If your dog can actually hear what you say, you are already ahead of the game! LOL.

Boston - Lucky is lucky that you found clicker training! :-) How cool that you train your rats! What sorts of things have you taught them? Maybe you can send a photo and a short write-up into the Wiggins Weekly! That would be great!

ponyluv - thanks for the book recommendation. I will see if our library has it. Are you going to be training out of the book? We'd love to know what you are doing!

horseygirl - how wonderful that you are adding clicker training to your repertoire of training techniques! It sounds as though you have your treat system working well for you. Which Kurland book are you reading?

Rusty - Jak is getting the hang of it. How funny that he forgot his treat! He is still processing everything. But the more you work, the more attuned to you and the clicker he will become. It sounds as though you two have made a great start!

Bramblelover - it is wonderful that you are taking these mistreated ponies and minis and working with them. Clicker training is so gentle, and will help them to overcome the fears their former lives have given them.

I think it was a good idea for you to get extra clickers! LOL. I'm curious - does Butterscotch eat raw macaroni? Or do you cook it first?

Thank you for introducing us to your ponies, and to Bramble! He sounds amazing, and you guys have done incredible work together. We are so glad you will be sharing your work with us now!

ponyluv - have you decided what you are going to teach Baby first? Just remember, no matter what YOU decide, HE may have other ideas! This is often the case. Just relax, have fun, and go with the flow. If you observe him, he will let you know what he wants and needs to work on!

Nat - great job with Princess. You'll have to take a picture (or have CoolGuy do it) and send it in to the WW!

Hey ashley! We're glad you came back to the club with your new account!

Onaneagle - of course you can join! This club is about clicker training. If you go back and read the posts from the beginning, it will give you a better idea of what clicker training is about. Also, if you can get hold of any of the books I recommended, you can learn a whole lot. Even if you don't have a pet, you may find yourself with an opportunity to clicker train an animal sometime. Maybe a friend or neighbor would like you to work with their animal! But we're glad to have you!

Boston - that is wonderful! Congratulations! Did you get any pictures? I would be very interested in knowing how you trained your dog to go through the tunnel. Was it hard? Please tell us when you have the time to type!

Clicker Column - August 14, 2010

Some new folks have joined our clicker club, and we are delighted to have them! And, reports are starting to roll in as members share their experiences and triumphs using the clicker with their pets. If you have wondered what clicker training is all about, we'd love to have you join us!

When I first became aware of clicker training, I wondered "How do you know what to do?" I read some articles online, but I still didn't "get it". So I decided that it wasn't for me. I had a mule that had been abused, and after six months of trying I could still barely touch him. I wanted to try clicker training, but I didn't understand what it was all about, and I didn't want to try training him and then ruin him. So, I put the thought aside for a while. But I kept finding myself thinking about it, so I decided to look into it again, and this time I found a great site that actually had some videos. I watched a video of a darling little pony being clicked for working with traffic cones. As I watched the video, all of a sudden I got it! I understood what was going on! So I went back and read some more articles on clicker training, and this time they began to make sense to me!

I finally decided that my mule was ruined anyway, and that clicker training couldn't hurt him. So I told my husband that all I wanted for our anniversary was a clicker. He believed me, and the day before our anniversary he stopped at a pet store and brought home a clicker. The next day I had my first session with Little Man, my Welsh mule. It was very short, but we were on our way. That little clicker was the best present I could have gotten, and for the price of a clicker, and a lot of time, Little Man was finally freed from the fear that had consumed him ever since I had first seen him.

I think that it was important for me to not only read about clicker training, but to SEE it in action. It was a blessing that I found those videos to watch. I also joined a clicker training group on yahoo, and the owner of the group, Judy Ryder, was the same person whose site I saw the videos on. She clicker trains Icelandic horses, and her IceRyder website features videos and articles on clicker training. So her name is a good one to add to your list of people to know about when you are learning clicker training.

If you do decide to look her up on the internet, please have your parents search with or for you. The Club Pony Pals site is one where you and your parents can be completely confident and relaxed, but the rest of the internet is not necessarily that way. Once you do find her site, the videos there are fine for you to watch. You will find that having both the written word and videos of clicker training in action will increase your understanding immensely.

May I join, Eagle? I have two animals I would like to train. 1 is my dog who we have trained before, but now she just ignores our commands! The other may sound weird and impossible to train, but its my guinea pig! I would love to say, 'Guess what? My guinea pig can do _____!'.

Thats not good Lianna. How is he doing now? My guinea pig is okay, she can do circles and shake your hand, but only if you give her a carrot while doing it :)
