Foreign Languages Club Well, it's got Russian on the actual website--it's just the app that doesn't have it. The app has (I think) German, Dutch, Danish, Ukrainian, Spanish, French, Italian, Irish, Swedish, Norwegian, Turkish, and. . .Portuguese? I think that's all of them. What fictional languages are you talking about, SWC? There's a program called Mango or something like that and it's got "Pirate" on it, which to me makes perfect sense, because I come from pirate country anyway. | Nat2 & The Price of Valor | 2018-10-09 04:43:55 | | Pirate??? On Duolingo one fiction language is Clyngon (However you spell it) The thing from startrek. I can't quite remember the other one. Alas. | SWC & Starsight | 2018-10-11 02:03:31 | | Yeah, Pirate. I'm not sure what practical use that has in the world, but hey. If I ever come across Jean Lafitte I'll be able to converse fluently in his own language.
Klingon? Oh, heavens, what has this world come to. XD Since this is the perfect segue into a random Star Trek fact, it should be noted that James Doohan, who played Scotty, the Chief Engineer on the original Series, practically developed the entire Klingon language himself. He was a fabulous voice actor as well and provided most of the extra voices for that horrible Star Trek: The Animated Series, *shudder*, which I had the displeasure of seeing in its entirety. | Nat2 & The Price of Valor | 2018-10-11 02:28:09 | | Well, I checked out a Russian for Dummies book from the library to research my novel; it's got several Russian characters in it, and while I can muddle my way through with the Germans' dialogue using my minimal knowledge of German, a dictionary, and a cheap Google Translate ripoff, I know less than nothing about Russian. Now, of course, after reading it, I know that Russian has 6 different cases, as opposed to Finnish's 15. Care to learn Finnish, anyone? | Nat2 & The Price of Valor | 2018-10-15 22:05:32 | | No, I think I will stick to trying to learn Russian.XD I'm still trying to find a good app/website/book to learn it from. Any suggestions? | GodHorsesAmerica & Pocket Full of Sunshine | 2018-10-16 16:54:10 | | The only apps/programs I've had much experience with are Duolingo, Rocket Languages, Mango Languages, and Rosetta Stone. Rosetta Stone can of course be outrageously expensive, but it's very effective. Rocket Languages and Mango are pretty good, the latter relying heavily on the "hear-and-say" method where you listen to the voice say the long, complicated sentence and then they expect you to be able to repeat it effortlessly--you know the type. Duolingo is the one I've been using, but I haven't tried Russian on it yet--it's not on the app. Another issue if you get their app is that they don't offer any explanation for WHY something is the way it is in a language. You have to look at the comments and hope some language expert has posted an explanation. The website itself, though, has tips and forums for you to look at--and of course, Duolingo is free, so if you have no money like me that's a big plus. XD Hope I didn't talk your ear off and that this is marginally helpful. | Nat2 & The Price of Valor | 2018-10-16 17:34:11 | | I've have Duolingo. I will have to try Rocket Languages and Mango. Because, I have no money. . .XD | GodHorsesAmerica & Pocket Full of Sunshine | 2018-10-16 19:58:39 | | I've had more success with Rocket Languages than Mango--but we get both of them through our libraries. You might look at your local library and see if they offer anything like that. Who knows, you might get lucky.
Oh ho, you have no money either, huh? I'm a starving artist--what's your excuse? Hmm? | Nat2 & The Price of Valor | 2018-10-17 00:49:53 | | Yeah. No money can be hard to work with since there aren't many good apps for free. And I'm good with the Finish thing. My head is exploding with learning the feminine and masculine differences in French. *Drops on ground* So... hard.... | SWC & Starsight | 2018-10-17 00:49:53 | | *pats SWC's shoulder comfortingly* I know, I know. It's terrible. C'est torture, oui?
What gets me in French is how the singular and plural forms for some words sounds EXACTLY ALIKE and yet are spelled totally different. *beats head against table* Stupid French... | Nat2 & The Price of Valor | 2018-10-17 01:08:19 | |
